Aldi food?

Another thread reminded me, I've been meaning to ask...

Theres an Aldi here, and I've been on the website and its CHEAP for things we get like weetbix and vitaweets and butter etc.

What's the quality like? Is there a reason its so cheap, is it a case of you get what you pay for?

We do all our shopping at Aldi and we love the quality . A lot of their food is made by the popular manufacturers, but repackaged for Aldi.

The reason they are cheap is because they are absolutely no frills when it comes to shopping there. You pack the groceries yourself and you use a coin or token to use their trolleys so that you have to return it yourself.

We eat their wheat bix all the time and can't tell the difference. There is only a handful of things I wouldn't buy there again (like their frozen chicken kievs and roll-on deoderant). Everything else has been fantastic and we save ourselves a fortune

I too love Aldi (even their Chicken Kiev - yum - we have them regularly). Their cereal, biscuits, staples, margerine etc are all excellent. You just don't have a choice between brands and they are Aldi only brands so not things you would recognise.

I've found that Aldi food is really full of nasty numbers. I don't bother going because I still have to go to the other shops to get additive free food.

give it a shot, you'll soon work out what products you like and what you'd rather go to Coles for... they have yummy biscuits.... you will save a fortune, particularly on stuff like detergents, dishwashing powder, glad wrap, bin liners etc etc... all the boring stuff.

Depends on what you are getting. I was not impressed with their cheaper biscuits (scotch finger etc), but like their premium ones (melting moments are to die for). Their rice crackers are good and for the moment their seaweed ones are the only ones without MSG. I always double check the ingredients though, as I have seen some change. Their cream cheese is fantastic value.

So what about the preseratives? I'm intolerant to MSG (and fairly intolerable when i eat it to LOL) so have to watch most things... I have only eaten two things from Aldi, a friend offered them to me, and I did notice a lot of preservatives (might have been because it was fairly processed so ) but I saw reference to preservatives on here the other day so it got me thinking is it an Aldi thing...?

We get all of our food products from Aldi. I find the quality is pretty darn good.... alot better than the generic supermarket brands.

Yeah, we used to exclusive Aldi, but there are still some products we use from Aldi that are numbers free. Our shopping is a bit all over the place, but they are worth the trip price wise for the nasty free stuff.

Preservatives is something that you just need to check product by product. I can't get apple juice and other things like that. So I do find it a bit limiting. I tend to go there only when I need nappies or see a good special on (had a great deal on bread mix once) and then I will pick on the stuff we like.

I think Aldi's food is fantastic quality (and I am VERY fussy about my food).

Yep, I've been generally happy with Aldi quality. For instance their diced tomatos in a can have lots of diced tomato in the can, not a few tomato bits floating in juice like other cheap brands can sometimes be. Same with their canned corn and kidney beans. Their pesto is also good.

We generally go to Aldi once every 2-3 months and stock up on pantry staples (i.e. we buy 36 cans of tomatoes!). It really saves on the grocery bills for us.

i think its trial and error. i have some set thigns i get from Aldi, then go to coles/safeway for the rest. i dont mind going into two supermarkets.

i think its best to go and have a look when you have time to browse... rather than on a mad shopping spree!

I've been buying quite a bit at Aldi lately - haven't tried their breakfast cereal, but their tinned stuff, flour, butter, frozen vege, cheese are all really good quality and taste good. Tried their shampoo, deodorant, nappy wipes, shower cleaner, toilet paper and like all of them too.

I do a monthly shop there and most stuff is great. Can't remember who told me but some aussie stuff is made in exactly the same factory they make the "real brand'. It is just repackaged. They actually had real kellogs nutrigrain packaged exactly the same when I was there 2 weeks ago. I bought chops and beef strip there the other day and chops were yum but beef strips tough so meat is a bit hit and miss. I always stock up on butter, which is good quality. Also their upmarket cheeses and dips are yum. I don't buy anything frozen so can't say about that. tissues and toilet paper are great.

We buy lots of the basics there, like tinned tomatoes, tuna, butter, cheese. They also have a lot of organic products cheaper than normal branded products in other supermarkets.. (if still prefer buying organic for DD, but not as pedantic now).

we are going there tomorrow, so I will take notice of what we actually buy.. But I do know that I am always suprised at the lower total price for what we have..
