Today is a little chilly and I am bored brainless, so I am just dreaming about some yummy food to eat. I am thinking of all of those yummy foods that just make me go 'ahhhh', like my nanna's baked rice pudding with cream, and lamb stew; or my mum's pea and ham soup, curried chicken/sausages with rice; and my own white bean and bacon soup, self saucing choc pudding, and chiken noodle soup with crusty bread. Or just some yummy crusty bread or rolls heated int he over with butter and vegemite...OMG, yuuuummmeeeeeeee!!!!!! I'm going to have to do some cooking now!
So what are your wintry comfort foods that warm your tummy and make you feel good?? It can be sweets, savoury, a meal, snacks what ever!
I'd have to say curry, pumpkin soup and yummy naughty deserts that are going to prevent me from losing weight! In the last few weeks ive made chocolate self-saucing pudding, sticky date pudding and rice pudding. All great 'winter warmers'
Zucchini soup. I love it so much!! I don't usually make it, I get my mum to. She always add's plenty of curry and ..... oh god, its to die for!!!
I'm sooooo hungry now. Thanks lilias!!!
Also love rice pudding (soo easy to make! Takes only a few minutes), any kind of chunky soup, smooth curried pumpkin soup, soup, soup.....soup.
Can't eat chocolate (allergies) so self saucing pudding is out of the question, but I love lemon self saucing, butterscotch self saucing...
Even just a bag of hot chips.
tehehehe reading the OP, i was thinking "pretty much all of this!"
we had curried sausages last night, and i experimented with a new baked rice pudding recipe (normally i do it on the stove top the way a Greek friend showed me how) - it was delish hot last night, and equally delish cold today as i was reading this post!
i LOVE that winter is "better" for roasts. we still have them over summer, but it can be less enjoyable if you get hot and bothered cooking it. tonights dinner will be roast rib eye beef (on the bone) with a garlic and onion crust. YUMMM
love soup - but i have to make the stock myself as any packaged stocks give me terrible reflux so i have to be in the right mood.
*DROOOL* LOL, yum girls, might have to be getting some recipes and trying some of these
Right now, I'm getting me some hot tea and buttered toast....we don't have any yummy crusty bread and the bakery is closed this time on a Sunday but toast will do....oohh, I might have some crumpets in the freezer! Yum, buttery honey crumpets! Another wintry fave, along with honey porridge. Mmmmm.
And I'm supposed to be trying to lose weight, lol! Though comfort food doesn't have to be unhealthy! Stews and soups are usually pretty healthy! And rice pudding isn't too bad, without the cream (well, I'm going to convince myself of that anyway!)
The only thing that keeps me going through winter is the food. I always look forward to pumpkin soup and my dad's split pea and bacon bone soup - which he'll usually make big batches of and give to us (though I've been doing a pretty good version of my own in the slow cooker this year).
I also really love roasts - beef/lamb/pork - doesn't matter as long as it is with some roast vegies and hot gravy.
I also love using my slow cooker and smelling the foods all afternoon. I'm making a chilli con carne in it this week and looking forward to eating that with some hot crusty bread.
Funny enough these winter foods are usually the easiest to make - just prepare, chuck in the slow cooker or oven and a few hours later - serve!!! Its the easiest cooking season I think.
Mmm all these winter warmers have given me a few ideas for the day! Might give some pumpkin scones a go (never tried making them before, anyone have a good recipe?) and I think I'll light the fire early and put a soup and loaf of bread on for dinner... Yum!
