I've had heartburn on and off, I can't pinpoint any food/drink that seems to cause it, just sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't! Nights are usually worse, so I try not to drink too much water later in the evening or before I go to bed. I find that having half a glass of milk helps to ease it and has worked for me so far.
There are some safe meds - I think Rennie is one, but check with your pharmacist. But the best option is to try and avoid it - eat small meals more often rather than fewer large meals, avoid having drinks (even water) with your meal, and try to eat at least an hour before lying down.
Other than that - well it does seem to go away instantly once the baby is born (until next time LOL!).
It's not much fun it it. I haven't been able to identify what brings it on, it just seems to come and go... I have found the quick eze chewy things great though, and they come in a range of flavours which are pretty tasty - I love the forest berry one!
I've had it with all four but never like I've had it this time... I finally resorted to the chemist, who said the liquid Mylanta was ok. It does work a treat, but I am wary of taking pretty much anything while pg... so I keep it for whenI really need it.
I also have the chewable tablets but I can't stand them, it's like chewing chalk I keep them in my bag for when I'm out & it's really bad. They do help but are not as good as the liquid.
The other thing that I find helps for some reason is water? I guzzle it when I have a bad case & it doesn't 'cure' it but it does help.
During my other pgs I had it but not this bad...milk worked ok then.
I find it's worse if I have sugary foods...strangely, spicy foods don't seem to bother me at all unless I have an 'attack' in which case everything bothers it.
A friend of mine recommended almonds can help, luckily I haven't had heartburn yet but I'm having some almonds once or twice a week just as a preventative LOL
If you want to avoid medications try a teaspoon of Slippery Elm powder (health food store or organic grocer) in a glass of warm water - must drink before it turns to 'glue' - tastes pretty 'gritty' too but it certainly works
If it's really bad take 1/2 teaspoon of baking SODA (not powder!) in warm water first to neutralise the acid then the Sliper Elm on top of that. Milk also neutralises the acid that's why it seems to do the trick.
I had it with my first and found that Tums tablets worked well (though they tasted disgusting!).
Someone told me that if you have heartburn a lot whilst pregnant it means that your baby will be born with lots of hair. Probably just an old wives tale - but my daughter had a full head of thick hear when she was born...
TUMS are safe during pregnancy - I don't mind the taste of them but I have suffered heartburn long before pregnancy - it just seems it has been multiplied by hundreds since being pregnant!
There is no consistency for me with triggers - it just seems to pick a different thing each day that will set it off... it is just that my body doesn't tell me what today's trigger will be lol
I had it bad last time and also this time... (and yes my DS was born witha full head of thick hair..)
I agree with the others - do not lie down/recline after eating. there is a good yoga pose to go into after you eat that keeps you upright.
In terms of meds, there are alot of over the counter that are safe. the best ihave found for me so far are TUMs. I basically clear out any store i find that stocks them! last time i used mylanta tabs and liquid and they were ok. i bought rennie in an emergency this time and they are good too.
in terms of natural therapy i have alse tried umeboshi plums (japanese pickled plums) - some people swear by them. i found them ok - not amazing biut not completely useless so this couldbe a good option as well.
I was SO GLAD it was instantly gone when DS was born!
i have had the worst intergestion and heartburn throughout my pregnancy.
yums havent worked, and there is limited medications forpreg women to take. however i find mylanta or gavascon works wonders.
and try sitting upright not slouching or bending the stmach/chest
