I'm making shepherds pie tonight with the mince I have. Make it all up in a big batch of savoury mince using the vege you have and then use some for the shepherds/cottage pie if you go with that option then freeze the rest in smaller batches as it will make great fillings for sloppy joes (reheated and put in a bread roll) if you want a quick and casual lunch or dinner.

Here's one of my most-used mince recipes (outside of lasagna, which is #1 *drool*) The kids love it, too. I got the recipe about 15 years ago from a crepe party, tho I have never actually used it for serving with crepes....

    about 500g mince
    1 onion, diced
    3-4 rashers bacon, diced
    1/4 cup brown sugar
    1 can tomato soup
    1 can 4 bean mix
Pasta (shells, spirals etc) to serve with

Fry mince, onion and bacon until mince is just browned through. Add tomato soup and brown sugar. Simmer for 10-15 mins. Add beans and lower heat right down to a slow simmer until beans are heated (5 mins or so). Eat. Yum.

Can also add some green capsicum if you like it when frying the first few ingredients.

cottage pie is made with fresh mince - shepherds pie with left over roast meat (just a useless little fact!)

    meatloaf/rissoles
savoury mince (with noodles or pasta)
a bolognaise type sauce made into lasagne/pasta bake
    pie (if you have pastry)
    burritos/tacos
sausage rolls (we make a meatloaf and cook half the mix as meatloaf, half as sausage rolls - with onion, carrot, capsicum etc)
bolognaise roll (basic bolognaise meat mix, rolled in puff pastry, baked, then sliced - recipe often on pampus puff pastry packs)

Bobotie (Traditional South African dish) Very yummo ...

1kg ground beef (it's actually made with ground lamb, but it's hard and expensive to get, so most ppl just use the beef)
1 thick slice of brown bread
    about a cup of milk
    2 onions, halved and sliced
hmm some olive oil, about 2 tbsp
    15ml mild curry
    10ml borrie/turmeric
    a tablespoon fine apricot jam
    1 egg beaten
a dash (I am not sure how much .. say about 30 ml) white wine vinegar
    some Bay leaves
    salt and pepper too taste

Ok, oven on 180 celcius. Soak the bread in the 250ml milk. Puree with fork. Heat the oil in a pan and fry onions till soft and brown. Add curry, borrie and jam ... fry like two minutes. Take off heat. In a large mixing bow, mix the milky-bread and the beef. Add the fried onions and rest of the ingredients (exept the bay leaves). Add salt and pepper too taste.
Place meatmix in ovenproof dish. Place/press bay leaves onto meat. Place in oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.
In the meantime, beat 3 eggs and 1.5 cups of milk together. Salt and pepper too taste. Take meat out of the oven and pour eggmixture over. Place back into oven and bake for another 25-30 minutes till nice and brown on top.

Serve with yellow rice with raisins, peas and carrots and home-made chutney.
Or simple green salad and yellow rice.
Yeah the rice must be yellow LOL

    And this freeze great.

Shepherd's/Cottage pie (I can never remember which one if the 'beef' one lol)
    Easy to remember...
Shepherds' pie is lamb (because what do Shepherds do? Look after sheep. And presumably eat a lot of them too)
Cottage pie is usually beef. So named because cattle live in cottages

Shepherd's/Cottage pie (I can never remember which one if the 'beef' one lol)
Shepherds look after sheep - lamb mince is shepherds pie so beef mince is cottage pie.
