    Get Running

Today was the day that I had to turn my fitness around. I did run one, week one of the C25K program.

My son is 13 months old. I was getting progressively more unfit and fatter.
Excuses...i've got a few....50 hour working week,2 kids who don't really like sleep, DH going through depression, My appendix bursting, financial pressure meaning I had to quit the gym....it goes on.

But today I started again. Prior to falling pregnant I completed a 13km run as part of training for my first half marathon.

Today I did the first day of C25K which was 28 and 1/2 minutes, 8 one minute runs...and it was so hard.

I used the iphone/ipod app Get Running. It is pretty awesome. You can have your music going and a kind woman's voice tells you when you should run and when you should walk. It made me sad to think of how fit I was 2 years ago, but I am back on the road to fitness...

    Anyone want to join me?

    Yay!! Good for you!

I started my own little thing today too. Right near DDs kinder is a big lake, with a track around it - 6kms of proper asphalted cycle/walking path! So I dropped her off and put bubs in the pram, put the speaker iPod on my phone on and power walked for an hour. Was ace! Felt so good.
So I decided I will do it the 3 days a week DD goes to Kinder.

What is the go with this C25K thing?

    It's stands for
Couch to 5 km and is designed to get a non runner from the couch to running 5pm in 9 weeks. A new runners biggest mistake is going too hard too fast so it is a gentle introduction. Tonight I ran for 60 secs walked for 90 seconds with 8 runs altogether and by week 9 I'll be running for thirty minutes straight. You do it 3 times a week. It's pretty easy to follow.

Sounds pretty cool, will check it out I think. Now will just have to find a sports bra so I don't knock myself out...

PollyA, well done on getting back into it! It's amazing how quickly our fitness drops off when we stop exercising hey?! You've done it all before, 13km! I've just done 5km on the weekend at the Bridges run in 35 minutes. You'll be back to your usual running distances in no time! I'm going to do the 8km Mothers Day classic next. I've also got the Bridge to 10k app on my phone now which is the next stage after the C25k.

LimeSlice, ah yes a really good sports bra is a must have! It feels so good to have the boobies supported

Good on you! I was doing the same until I injured my knee & have had to go back to basics to gain strength but I am hoping to return to the C25k very soon - I really enjoyed the program (I did it on the treadmill at home)

I'll be a treadmill runner for the most part too which means I can do it after work when all my babies are sleeping. On fact I did it at 9:30pm last night as I didn't get home from work. Not ideal but I had to prove to myself that I could fit it in to my crazy life. Yay. A little sore today. Glad it's a rest day.

I completed C25K a couple of years ago, and it was awesome!! Its a great program and having it on the ipod really helps

Then I had DS and I haven't run since... probably time to pull the ipod out and start again, now where did I put my motivation?? !!

Well done to you! I am up the duff at the moment so running (in fact any exercise) is all a bit too hard when sleep is calling so often! But I do fantasise daily about going for a run.

Am counting down to when I can exercise properly again.

I am in...again!!! HERE is a thread we should resurrect and see how people are going! I broke my toe a few mths ago and was waiting for that to heal while I did Contours and some stuff at home, and I was about to go back to my C25K this week and I put my back out on Sunday but as soon as I am pain free I am in! It gets easier hun, keep at it, I know that I got to the first day of week 4 - I think it was 2 x 90 sec run/walk 3 min run/walk and by then I actually ran THROUGH all my walks becuase I felt so good and I essentally ran all but 3 mins of a 20 min run which at the beginning was unheard of!!!!

Thanks for starting this thread. I'd never heard if this before and never been a runner but I just got the app and seems like a great way to built up the stamina to be able to run rather then just walk like I normally do. Not sure when I'll get started but can't wait to give it a go!

I miss running - wish I was joining you! I want to do a marathon in the next couple of years. I was never, ever a runner and getting started was the hardest and best thing I've ever done!! I managed a half-marathon (21km) 7 months after starting running from scratch so its amazing how quickly fitness improves once you start running. I think it is the best form of exercise out there, its virtually free (runners & sports bras excepted) and everyone can do it. Don't have to be fast just have to keep going!

Well done girls, can't wait to hear how you are all going! Make me really jealous, ok?

I am on my last day of week 2 of the C25K and I love it! I too was a runner before having DS and this is a great way to ease back into running again. I couldn't do it without my iphone app. It is a man doing it and he is good but I don't like the music ( a bit clubby!!) but don't want to change I don't think! Keep it up Polly- it is hard but it feels great at the end of a run, doesn't it??

The best part of Get Running is it plays simultaneously with your own music, so you get to choose. I'm not sure I could run to someone else's beat.
