    What's high in iron?

DD doesn't eat any meat, except chicken nuggets occasionally. Where is she getting iron from? She had a BT and both the paed and I thought she would be iron deficient but she's not. I'm stumped!
What's iron in? She doesn't eat any red meat or green vegetables (or any other colour veges for that matter)

Green leafy veg, not sonmuch spinach as while it's high in iron it's very hard to absorb, moreso than other non heme iron sources

Vit C also helps iron absorbtion.

Were your DDs iron levels normal or high?

Breast milk has low levels of iron but it's very easily absorbed so it's actually high in iron.

Normal, 135. Both the paed and I were very surprised.
She does eat some dried fruit and she has a vitamin tab once a day but I thought that was just a puny amount of iron. She eats wholemeal bread. I guess they must be it then.

Thanks all. I am pretty clueless when it comes to nutrition. I should probably do some research one day.

As long as she is getting iron from sources that aren't high in calcium as well as sources that are, as they inhibit each others absorption.
It's the same with calcium and protein which is why non dairy calcium sources are important. Sorry tangent.

To add the absorption of the iron in the food it should be partnered with something high in vit C...so Tofu (iron) and broccoli (vit c)...or dried fruit and oranges.
I have been vegetarian for 20 years and had 7 kids and am still extremely healthy...with a good diet and some supplements you shouldn't become iron deficient.
