3 months ago I lost my baby girl Char-leigh @ 35wks with the understanding that her cord was tangled around its self. My ob ran a lot of test on me to find that I have a blood disorder caller Factor V Leiden Heterozygous. Which makes it more likely for your blood to clot.
I was also told that they found clots in Char-leigh's cord which could be a factor of losing her as well. I was wondering if anyone else has or knows of someone who has this disorder.
Cheers Kelly
I have a friend who has this and she has 3 healthy children. She was diagnosed prior to pregnancy though and she was put on blood thinners for the duration (Clexane I think) and then she was taken off them prior to being induced for birth so that she could clot again if she bled. From what I know she was more closely monitored throughout pregnancy than most people and her children have been tested for the disorder as well.
Sorry to hear of the loss of your baby girl.
I have Factor V Leiden and am also heterozygous - this means you carry one copy of the gene (homozygous = 2 copies). We are around 7 times more likely to get a blood clot while those with both copies are 100 times more likely to get a clot.
I have a 10 month old, she hasn't been tested. During IVF and early pregnancy I had clexane shots.
From 26 weeks gestation onwards I wore full leg compression stockings every day.
I would recommend you ask for a referral to a haematologist. There are precautions you need to take in general life eg you shouldn't take the contraceptive pill as that also can cause clots, and you should wear compression stockings when flying.
Any questions feel free to ask
Mrs P have you ever had any blood clots??
I know about the pill and they have put me on the mini pill. I have been back to the dr and ob a number of times only to get the same answers to sit and wait to see what happens. As I have some results pending. I have never had any form off clotting.
I have been told I would be a "high risk pg" if i was to have another baby and it that i could still have a healthy baby at the end.
i am sorry to hear about the loss of your baby girl. Factor v leiden runs in our family and the majority of the women are as you say classed as "high risk" during pg. As the others have mentioned they tend to monitor pregnancy really closely and also put you on the blood thinners.
My SIL has this. She found out during pregnancy because she got a clot in her leg (during a long distance flight). She was put on clexane and went on to have a healthy normal baby.
Char-leigh's Mum - no I haven't had a clot before. I didn't know I had FVL until a series of tests were done as part of preparation for IVF. So I didn't find out until I was around 30, and had been on the pill for ~9 years, taken several long-haul flights without compression stockings, and also had saline injections to treat varicose veins in my legs (my haematologist flipped out when I told him I'd had that done!). So I guess lots of 'high risk' activities but fortunately I didn't get a clot.
While it may be difficult for Dr's to say if FVL caused the loss of Char-leigh, at least now you can get the additional medical treatment and monitoring needed if you get pregnant again. I wish you all the best
Hi Kelly, I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your daughter.
I had several clots on my lungs last year and was diagnosed with Prothrombin Gene Mutation (heterozygous) which sounds similar to Factor V Lieden. I had been on the pill for many years and have done lots of travelling, which are both risk factors for clots as well.
I just finished my warfarin (blood thinners) and have an appt with a haematologist next month and I will ask about where to go from here with regards to birth control, TTC, pregnancy and birth.
I wish you all the best for the future in going forward now that you have this new information.
Thanx everyone its good to not feel alone on this.
Musiclover it would be great to hear what they say to you it would be great if maybe you feel like sharing it with us.
