My dd is back on losec at 21 months! Any others know babies on it at this age?
As the title says, My dd is back on losec again. We stopped giving it to her about 8 weeks ago as she had a vomiting bug so was throwing it up and then wasn't eating so we couldn't give it to her, so because we were hoping to start weaning her off it soon we didn't put her back on it. She seemed ok for a few weeks but has progressively got worse again. I can hear the swallowing - it comes up, goes down and then she lets out a cry, she being fussier with her food and drink, sleeping is shocking (well I should be used to that now!) and arching her back in her sleep.
So I rung the paed and we have put her back on it. I hope it settles her down again. No one ever warned me how hard this reflux gig would be, I feel like it has run our lives since she was born. So sad for her
Anyone else had a baby that has suffered so long with it and still on meds? Im scared she will always have reflux now and will be on meds for life!
I knew a little guy who was still on it at 7 years old. Couldn't have fizzy drinks (maybe a blessing in that regard) or anything. It's a tough road, but stick with it. It will get better soon.
Have you seen a gastroenterologist for a consult at all? It might be worth looking at possible physical causes for the reflux if it hasn't settled by this age....just a thought...and yeah it is a horrble thing, I have it as an adult and it is not pleasant at the best of times.
My DD is only 6 months and so far we've had no luck in weaning her off zantac, every few months or so the symptoms return. Reading the the signs though and knowing exactly what you're talking about i feel for you. You said it for sure... no one warned us either about the difficulties of having a little one with reflux. I'm sorry your little one seems to still be effected by it.
If you feel like reading a bit more into Reflux i can recommend a book that i saw mentioned in another thread which i tracked down and read. It's called 'Colic Solved. The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby' by Bryan Vartabedian. It discussed, babies, toddlers and even young children. Just an idea....
sorry you wrote this a while ago, I haven't been on for a long time.
BUT
YES!!! my daughter has it and she is 22 months! (2 on the 2nd of nov) Its so stressful and worrying having them on medication at this age isn't it. We have been waiting to see a specialist for 10 months!!!. My daughters reflux is still bad, if we try to decrease her losec she will stop eating. Her throat must burn her. Shes normally a great eater. We have been to about 8 GP's, a naturopath, chiro and still no luck. It drives me insane not knowing what is causing her reflux and its terrible to see her in pain. The doctors we have seen just look at her, and say 'oh she looks so healthy', so don't really care. We are currently on a dairy free diet to see if that helps. Jasmine has been on losec since 5 weeks old. I worry that its doing her harm, but feel stuck in a rut as if shes not on it shes in that much pain she can't eat. She has an appointment with a pead on the 31st of oct.
How is your little girl now? its such a long road isn't it.
Thanks for replying Jen, nice to know (though sad at the same time) that we are not the only ones going through this!
She is still on the losec and will be 2 next week. The Paed didn't want to increase her dose last time we saw him but I think it needs to be. He sent her for a barium meal swallow through which showed her refluxing straight away (which was a relief of sorts because Im sure some people just dont believe me!) they were looking for a structural problem. We find out the results when we see the paed again on Oct 5th. The paed wanted to try her off the losec again but I dont want to do this. He said he would refer us to a gastro spec as the next step.
Our dd hase been on meds since she was 3 weeks old, I hate that shes been on it for so long too, but what can I do? It already has caused major sleep issues, muscles that needed physio for a year as she didnt learn how to isolate her muscles as she was tense all the time, pain association so I had to stop breastfeeding as she lot alot of weight and the list goes on. I found when we did try to take her off the meds she stopped eating, became very irritable, would be screaming for hours all night and hiccuping all the time.
Will let you know how we go from our next appoint. Hopefully we can both get some answers!!
Oh Razzberry your daughters reflux sounds exactly like my daughters. As soon as we start even decreases Jasmines losec, she gets the dreaded hiccups, then after a few more days will just stop eating. And amongst that she is crying most of the night.
I am looking forward to her appointment at the end of october but so scared that we will hear the same things we have heard before. That she will outgrow it, or that nothing can be done at the moment. I just want a doctor to help her. Can they not see that the tablets are only disguising and covering up a big problem? .
So happy for you that your daughter had a barium meal swallow, and I can defiantely understand that you must of been quite relieved almost, just to know that she was refluxing so hopefully now the problem can be sorted. It sounds like you are having a bit of progress, moving in the right direction with maybe seeing a gastro. Don't you just want them fixed right away! hopefully we will both have the answers soon.
We have never tried Jasmine dairy-free/soy free/egg free until this last week. Have you tried it for your daughter? if so how did she go? I did read along time ago on the internet (have you done hours and days of reading about reflux too? bet you have!) that sometimes reflux can be caused by an intolerance but when I mentioned it to my daughter when she was a baby he told me not to put her on a dairy-free diet as that wouldn't be the reason. He also said he didn't believe in reflux and it was her behaviour. Can you believe that?!
I asked a couple more doctors but they said don't try the dairy-free. We have just moved back to Perth (from near Albany) and the first doctor we saw here said straight away to take dairy out of her diet (and soy) so we are trying that.
We have just started to try and decrease her losec too. Last night she was throwing up (about 4 times) and we thought, she has a stomach bug. But as soon as shes out of bed shes totally fine, playing etc. So its probably her reflux again
Let me know how your daughters appointment goes. Fingers crossed that they find the answer quickly. I think I might ask if my daughter can also have the barium meal swallow! but what if they find shes now refluxing they might think I have made the whole thing up! do you think the refluxing will still show if shes fully medicated on losec? or would I need to decrease her dosage first?
i know zantac's not the same but yes dd is still on her zantac at nearly 2. have tried to wean her several times but same as you guys the symptoms just return.
i spoke to go about it being long term and he said zantac is very mild on them and not to worry, i would assume losec to be the same (given that they prescribe it to bubs really young and all).
Theres nothing we can do, they need the relief, they need to eat and they need to sleep.
one of my friends has a ds who always had vomiting and eczema sp? right from birth and shes had him (and herself due to bf) on every elimination diet known to man, finally at 2 she found a gp who said perhaps its been reflux the whole time and the eczema is just coincendental, since going onto zantac at 2 he has finally started eating and sleeping properly and now she knows whats up she has finally got him to stop vomiting so much (particularly all through his bed). he still has the eczema on and off but i think thats just him iykwim as none of the diets helped. So dont stress there are plenty out there who are on meds at our lo's age for refulx, not to mention those just starting out on meds.
we do what we can with our reflux bubs, no one understands what we go through, unless theyve been there, and there are those out there who think 'reflux' is just the latest scapegoat to blame everything on and that we're making mountains out of molehills (have had several people comment and make me feel like cr*p for the meds) but there are plenty of us out there who know exactly what you're going through.
i hope you get some answers soon hun, and that your dd gets some major and long term relief
Jen27 - yes, we were told by the first paed that we saw that she might have a milk protein intolerance and to stop breastfeeding and to put her on this special formula called neocate - but I didnt want to do that as she was only 6 weeks. I had gone dairy free myself and had not noticed much of a difference anyways. However, we are currently trialling a limited dairy diet (eg. shes eating cheese and has milk on cereal) but not any other milk to drink or yogurt which she loves! Not seeing much of a difference.
I asked the doc who did the barium swallow about whether her being on losec effects the results and he said not at all as the losec just takes away the pain from the acid but doesnt stop it coming up the throat. She was on her normal med dosage at the time of the test.
Jen82 - Is there a reason why your dd didn't ever get put on losec? Is it because the zantac worked well for her?
so we went to the paed today. He said the barium swallow test showed mild-moderate refluxing but no structural problems. He is trialling her on a newer medication called nexium - have you heard of it? Apparently its very similar to losec but some people respond better to it, so hears hoping!!
Hi Jen82
Nice name
Sorry to hear you are on this LONG reflux road too. Hope your dd gets better soon
Hi Razzberry, did your doctor give you an answer to why she was refluxing, even though there were no structural problems? (glad there are no structural problems for your daughter)
we have had an interesting update. Jasmine has been coughing all night, every night. I rang health direct and managed to speak to a gp. She could hear my daughter coughing. she said due to her only coughing in the night, and not at all in the day, she could have asthma as well. she then asked if she has food allergies as reflux, allergies and asthma can all be related!. She said if it wasn't asthma it could be nasal drip causing her coughing. (we just assumed all the coughing was due to reflux, which it has been a fair amount of the time, but its getting worse). but the reflux could now be causing asthma
Jasmines still on the soy free/dairy free diet, but we haven't been able to reduce her losec to see if its working or not yet, as just before we switched to this new diet, we reduced the dose and she got bad symptoms again and its taking along time to get her ok again.
sometimes Jasmine will have spit in her mouth, like its a bad taste, then take it out with her fingers does your daughter do that too?
