Just wondering what other mummys have done when bubs is home from hospital?
Do/did you put them in a bassinette in your room or straight in their nursery in their cot?
DH and I are confused as to whether to use the basinette in our bedroom, or whether to use the bassinette only for day sleeps out in the lounge room to establish a.proper night day pattern from birth and use the cot at night time.
I should add that we will be getting a monitor for overnight in the nursery.
We didn't get a basinette as we figured it wouldn't be used for very long. So we've got DD's nursery set up as if she were in there full time.
But, we have a portacot set up in our room that she sleeps in at night - I find it easier and more reassuring having her right there. My parents bought us a basinette attachment for our pram, and while she still fits DD has her day sleeps in there in the lounge. Again, I just like having her nearby.
She won't fit in there too much longer though, so she's had a few day sleeps in her room so that she gets used to it.
We had a bassinet in our bedroom for the first 6-8 weeks but he was a chubba and outgrew it quickly he then moved into his cot. We had no issue with the changeover and having him close in those first weeks was great. We are planning the same this time too!
We bought a bassinet only because we have a dbl storey house and it gets very hot upstairs, she was Born in Dec. So we got it because our room has aircon. I'm now glad I got it because I didn't like the idea of my little tiny bub being all on her own, I wanted her close by all the time. I'm sure she would have been fine though, I'm just a sook. Our bassinet was $160, so fairly inexpensive. Can you borrow one from a friend or family member rather than buy one if you're worried you won't use it? I Also found it convenient with bf to have her close. Good luck
I used a cradle for both the girls that was right next to my bed. I chose a cradle over a bassinet because it was substantially bigger. We also had a two storey house at the time and there was no way I was going to go up and down the stairs to their room (ours downstairs) while sleep deprived. In the early days it was great because I could doze off while patting/stroking the girls to settle them. Having said that, they both fed sooooo often and for so long that they spent a great deal of the night attached to my boob in bed next to me. During the day I wheeled the cradle out into the family room.
My DS just looked so tiny in his cot.. He looked so much more snuggly and warm in the bassinet (he was born at the start of winter). He was in his cot by 3.5 months cos he outgrew the bassinet.
Both our girls started off in a bassinette in our room and then went into a cot in their own room at; DD1 @ 6 months and DD2 at 10 months (we co-slept)
I guess it'd depend on the layout of your house and how comfortable you'd be having bub in a different room. When DD was born she went straight into her cot, but her room was adjoining mine and I'm a very light sleeper at the best of times - with both doors open I had no problems hearing her when she stirred. She did look super tiny though!
This time, we've bought a cradle and plan to have Penguin in our room to start with as his room is right down the other end of the house. Even with a monitor I think I prefer it that way, as much for convenience with night feeds etc as anything else.
I have bub in a Moses basket right next to my side of the bed. I love it because if he wakes at all I can just sit up in bed and pick him up if I need to. I also think he sleeps better having us right next to him, as he can hear us breathing/sleeping.
We used our bassinet until DD was about 4 months old for all sleeps, day and night. Only reason we stopped using it when we did was because she needed surgery on her hips and had to go into plaster. Her legs were then too wide for it. We still wanted her in with us, so we set up the portacot in our room and she slept in there until she was seven months.
I loved having the bassinet. I was really upset with why we couldn't use it anymore. Got my fingers massively crossed that one day we'll be able to use it again.
I put DS straight in a cot with a tetra snuggle bed thinger. We have no room in our bedroom for a bassinet
during the day he'd sleep on the floor in the lounge on this little doona/mattress thing I was given he would sleep there for ours tho, and only ever a few minutes in his cot during the day. I think he liked being around still when everyone else was!
Thanks everyone for your experiences. Yes bubs room is down the end of the house and although we will have a sound and movement monitor I still don't like the idea of having Bub so far away when I'd like to breastfeed. DH wants to establish a sleep routine for day and night but as I've tried explaining to him, babies have no sleep pattern for quite a while no matter what you do lol
I suppose if he wants a good nights sleep ill have to sleep next door to the nursery and he can have bedroom.
Do what you feel most comfortable with.
For me, that was to to keep DS close to me at all times. I liked to listen/poke to make sure he was breathing He was in the bassinet for all his sleeps, unless he was in the bed with me or in my arms on the couch during the day. We had absolutely zero troubles with day/night establishment or transitioning to his cot when he was about 6 months old.
As you said, I wouldn't even think about sleep routines yet! A newborn doesn't have any bad habits, just needs that must be met.
Had my DD's in a bassinet in our room at night until they slept through. Used the cot for day sleeps from about 4 weeks, with dd2 was worried my oldest might accidentally tip the bassinet over while I was preoccupied going to the loo. I liked the convenience for night feeds of having the bassinet at arms reach
With MrJ, it was bassinet straight away and he never really ended up doing the cot thing much in the end because at 7 months (still in the bassinet) we started co-sleeping most the time and haven't gotten out of the habit until recently. MrT was co-sleeping with me at first, then I started putting him down in his bassinet at bed time, after the first night feed I attempt to put him back into the bassinet but then after that (if he wakes again) he comes into bed with me. They just look so tiny in the cots to me when they are first born, although I will definitely be putting bub in the cot when he gets bigger as I'm done with co-sleeping lol
