    Writing key selection criteria......

I need some advice about applying for a job outside of the education sector. Well, it is sort of within education, being at a uni however, with teaching each KSC that is advertised is covered by a one A4 page addressing the criteria. The job I am going for has quite a few selection criteria but I am not sure how long each has to be. There are 3 under Experience, 4 under skills/techniques and one under Desirable.

What is appropriate for this type of position! I am assuming 8 pages would be overkill but am not really sure what is expected because I am so used to addressing 5-6 criteria at one page each!

If anyone has any advice that would be amazeballs!

Is this for the application letter?
One page only... I would address the KSC in both the letter and resume.

This has been the case for nursing, OHS and research positions that I have applied for don't know if it is the same though!
    Goodluck

Pretty sure it's on top of the cover letter and resume. This is what it says

All applicants are encouraged to provide a separate statement addressing each key selection criteria in addition to providing a resume.
I guess it says statement for each KSC so maybe a paragraph for each?!!! Gosh I am clueless!!

Approx 1-2 pages per selection criteria using the STAR method.

Some specify the length of selection criteria, some I've seen are 500 words per criteria.

I work for a large govt dept. Our limit is 500 words per criteria. If the job has a contact officer, it may pay to give them a call, to clarify. You don't want to waffle, but at the same time you don't want to omit important information that will go towards you getting a foot in the door.

I was going to suggest the STAR method too. Know what that is hun? Happy to explain if not.

I would have thought a para or two for each KSC would be heaps. Maybe give them a call and check.

Otherwise, write what feels natural, giving enough detail to clearly show each aspect of the STAR and see how you go. You want it to be detailed enough to get your point across without waffling/rambling.

Thanks all might give them a call on Monday. I had no idea what STAR was til I googled and that is what we do for teaching positions as well so should be cool! Glad I have a week to get it in!!

wow, a page for each KSC? for the education department in SA, you only get ONE page total to cover the areas of relationships, curriculum, student learning and safe working environment - its so hard to sell yourself in that space limit.

When I've done other applications with about the same amount of selection criteria as you've described, I think I've done 1-2 paragrpahs on each criteria, so about 3-4 pages.

Good luck! writing job applications is so hard!

I wish it was one page total!!!! Each job lists 5+ KSC, the good thing is that a lot of schools list the same criteria for jobs, so you don't have to rewrite each one!!! I have been able to tweak my original ones from last year to suit jobs for this year but yep they are one page each or very slightly less. When I reapplied for the job I am in this year she added 2 more to the original criteria she had so I had 7 pages covering 7 criteria that was fun, NOT!!!

Also when you ring the person, question them about the job, about any extra skills etc they're looking for & then incorporate those into the application

wow, ok so 7 pages, maybe not so good to write! I just find it hard fitting everything in I want to say on one page, so I think 3 or 4 pages is pretty good.

I would think half a page for each KSC.

For the NSW DET its half a page for each General SC and Specific SC for schools. I submitted a job application last week for an assistant principal position and it ended up being 5 pages long. Half a page on each of the 10 (in total) criteria.

    Good luck

I agree, half a page max for each SC. I'm in fed govt and have chaired lots of selection panels. Reading pages and pages of responses (that often don't say much at all) is very frustrating.

I have loads of other tips so let me know if you're interested and I'll post them!

    Good luck

Thanks all!! Will write a half page response per criteria and then I will all the guy who is out of the office til Thursday later in the week just to be sure. Dh is out of town tonight so will get started, I think I can copy and paste from some others that I have done for teaching, and just re edit.
