I so so SO want to get me a thermomix! I've been looking at them for weeks and I'm sold lol. I'm not a great cook and I don't really have a passion for it (because of the mess it makes mostly) but I can see me doing a lot more with a thermomix.
DF is worried that it is just a fad and it'll end up sitting on the shelf within a few weeks and not used - just like the juicer he bought me 2 years ago
So I'm wondering - have you had your thermomix for a while and your still using it all the time? Or do you get over it and stop using it again?
Also, is it the best thing to ever happen to your kitchen?
If he baulks at the $$ then show him the thermochef, does the same, can barely tell the difference between the two etc.. But the thermochef is about half price of the mix.
Okay so I'm going to be open and transparent about my bias. I'm an owner, lover and consultant.
I've had my thermie since July. I love it. Love it. Love it. It makes life so much easier and more interesting. And we eat healthier, wholer foods. I get such a kick put of replacing things that we previously bought processed into things I've homemade. Soooo easy.
I use mine all the time. Just this weekend gone, I made 2 batches of butter, 2 massive quiches (pastry and all), rum balls, rocky road, very large bowl of coleslaw, sorbet, hommus, sundries tomato dip, 2 batches of apricot jam, bread rolls, double batch of icecream and a cake. All in the thermie. I only used the oven when needed and fried the bacon in a frypan for quiche. Oh and a saucepan for sterilising jam jars. And I didn't spend all weekend in the kitchen!!
Has he seen one in action? My advice, if he hasn't, have a demo. They're easy and really informative. Men (and women) need to see it working. I did and DH def needed to. If and when he has seen it in action, google google google. There are a few threads about negatives (minimal and subjective IMO) and heaps on positives and money saving. Both DH and I needed to know the cons before buying so we could weigh them up. Needless to say the pros won by a long shot.
Beansbeans - just looked it up, people seem to get pretty heated talking about the differences lol. I'm definitely going to look into it more though - thanks! The price definitely makes a huge difference. Do you have a thermochef?
Kimmi - I got the same look lol but DF just doesn't understand that it will change our lives like I do
I just love the idea of making fresh, healthy food for DD and our new baby without as much hassle.
I hope you somehow get your much wanted Thermomix.
My DH has given me the go ahead to get one, but I am the one holding back. I guess I'll need a demo first. I want one badly but I am wondering how much it can make. There are 8 people in my house, 5 of them eat adult servings. I wonder if it would only be a novelty to me until my older kids move out?
(Sent from my phone, so I apologise if it makes no sense.)
Nope I dont have one, but Dh has both at work (one weak moment for the boss) and he says you cant tell the difference. Both have the same end results, the only difference is that the chef doesnt have a reverse function, but thats all.
But ot to start a debate on which is better, I was merely suggesting the chef as an option especially if money is an issue on getting one. You would get the same thing, but it would cost less.
Ohhh I *suggested* we need one to my hubby at a friends BBQ on the weekend as well!!!
I also told him that I wanted my Circulon 2 saucepan set also
After we sold the house he spent over $1000 on a mountain bike, and I was allowed to buy myself something special as well...er, I just couldn't justify spending money on myself
I'll be back later with more, but for now:
1) I actually missed my TMX whilst away. I am so used to fresh, homemade, "proper" food now, I was craving it. Got home last night too tired to do more than have toast. Tonight I made myself some yummy chicken soup with no numbers in it. Proper stuff using stock I also made and had in the freezer.
2) the big difference between the TMX & the chef is the motor. The chef is made in China & has a mechanical motor. The TmX is European and has a resistance motor - it uses magnets, not moving parts, so it will last longer. Which, given the price of both, is where I think the price difference is. Also, you'd be surprised at how important the reverse function can be. I researched this a lot before I bought.
3) you & your DH need to have or attend a demo. My DH was a sceptic until he saw how it worked.
Bbl with more. Check out the TMX lovers thread for ideas.
I hope it's ok if I jump in here!I'm usually a bit of a lurker sorry, used to frequent the cloth nappy threads!!! But I saw this and couldn't help but reply!
I bought my TMX 6 months ago and loved it so much after a few months I became a consultant! So yes, I have a bias! BUt like I say to people at demos, everyone has to make their mind up for themselves, it is a big purchase, I can only say what it does and how we love to use it!!
For starters, you need to get hubby to a demo. It happens over and over again that wives say hubbys won't let them, but as soon as I talk to the guys or feed them some food, or get them to a demo, they quickly change their stance!!! A demo is easy and obligation free!
Second, it won't be like the juicer (I had the same experience myself!!). It performs so many functions, you would be hardpressed NOT to use it!!! I use it for almost everything - I make our juices, breakfast smoothies, frappes, hot drinks, porridge, soups, main meals, rice, bread, pizza bases, pasta dough, sauces, dips, non-dairy milks, yoghurt (big money saver for us as I used to buy proper pot set yoghurt), custard, sorbet, ice cream mixture, cakes, muffins, peanut butter, steamed fish, vegies, mashed potato.... I could go on and on!
I used to hate that I had to make a "session" everytime I used my juicer or mixmaster. Haul everything out of the cupboards, perform one duty, then end up with a stack of mess and washing up. Now my tmx sits on the bench all the time, ready to throw in some ice, fruit and water for juice, or weigh in some ingredients for a cake or muffins, or make fresh bread rolls to eat with dinner etcetc!
If your hubby likes food, encourage him that its easy for him to use too... my hubby is not overly domesticated, but he is in charge of pizzas, peanut butter, some mains, has even been known to through in anzac cookies!!!! He made spicy salsa the other day cause he likes it.... now he would NEVER EVER have attempted these with the tmx, its just so easy, step by step and like operating a machine for guys!
I love that I can make fresh, whole additive free food and its so easy. My mum loves hers because she always uses it for at least one or 2 elements of her meals, she entertains a lot, so she puts it in charge of making sauces, gravies, custards, her slices, caramel tarts, soups and juices.
If all else fails, if you got it and weren't using it, you wouldn't lose alot if you had to pass it on - so make that one of the guarantees... that you will give it a good go or let it go!!! I love that it inspires me to do so many things i would never have tried before (I do not particularly like cooking either!)
Lisa, it would be great if you could have a demo too!!! I am in Newy too and would be able to give some examples of catering for more in the family if you like - that would help you make the decision whether it would be any good for you. Having hubby on board already would make a lot of people envious!!!
So all the best Ash, it really has changed our lives totally for the best, and created a lot less stress at meal times while the tmx cooks our dinners!! Let us know how you go!
