Role of the weight loss Support Person

Ok so i am the weight loss support person (by default because i am the wife lol)

My problem is i am HOPELESS at all things dieting. No doubt due to the fact i have never really had to because thus far in life my metabolism is working as it should.
DH on the other hand has always struggled, and is on the other hand of the metabolism spectrum.

I really really want to support him and help him achieve his goals. Prior to getting married he was fantastic at being strict, portion control, exercise etc. Now the weight has crept on and i know he isn’t happy with how he his.

I suggested ww. He had agreed despite arguing "then i cant say i have never been on a diet...". Then we decided to use the my fitness pal app. Has anyone had success with this? I am doing it with him, albeit I am going to try and lose 2kg over 3 months

The problem as i can see it is i have never had to cook diet. We eat a Mediterranean diet and i have never thought twice about using oil. Or if i wasn’t butter i do it, or cheese etc. Nothing in excess, but i use it nonetheless

What do i need to watch out for though? How can i change my cooking style to help him? I hate that its my lack of self control that makes him worse

How do you help your partner or how would you like to be supported to reach your goals.

I do all the cooking so buck stops with me there...

I think it's all about encouragement and finding what works for him.
Using a good quality oil is ok it's actually good for you, it's about everything in moderation and getting exercise.

DP and I are having the same issues at the moment but BOTH of us are trying to lose weight and we have very different ideas on how it should happen.
Making sure he eats is also something to think about - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner - if he doesn't eat breakfast his metabloism wont be starting properly (this is a big issue for my DP)

I have my fitness pal - i logged my meals for a couple of days but that was more to get an idea of how much was in what i already eat.... TBH i wasn't actually getting anywhere near the calories it said i could have BUT my biggest issue is i'm not actually eating enough to keep my metabolism going.

So here i eat when the kids eat (including fruit snacks) and i'm going to try and get back into netball and walking

Not sure i've helped at all... i'm sure more people will have better advice

Can you substitute your oils for coconut oil? Its been shown to result in pretty decent weight loss. I wrote more about that in the recent coconut oil thread Drinking lots of water. A good nights sleep. Eating fruits for snacks on an empty stomach. Just a few of many

If you eat a healthy diet that doesn't have too much crap in it then the issue is might be portion control.
The easiest way for you to help here is to not cook too much. And don't offer seconds.
Also you can trick you body into thinking it's eaten more by eating slowly.

I agree that portion control is the key.

I've lost around 10kg by reducing portions rather than fussing about low fat, carbs, oils etc etc. I still eat butter, drink full fat milk, chocolate, the odd cake but my day to day eating is lots of veggies , lean meat etc.

Does he drink much alcohol? A lot of my excess weight was down to wine

Would you consider something like the CSIRO eating plan? It is kind of a diet but also just a healthy eating plan (it gives you menu plans and recipes, all calculated so you cover the recommended intake of fruit, veg, calcium, wholegrain breads and cereals etc etc.). It is very specific about portion sizes and the 'how' of a healthy diet which allows you to loose weight. The recipes are really nice so you feel like you are eating 'good' food not diet food ITMS.

Portion control and drink lots of water, eat a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, protein and fruit.
Energy in = energy out. If he's eating a normal diet without too much junk food (refined foods/sugars/fats/salts), and if he exercises 'til he's too puffed out to talk easily, for about 45 mins every day, there should be weight loss.

I put DH on the CSIRO diet about 2 years ago. He has lost 18kg and has kept it off. We only followed it for dinners, had cereal for breakfast, fruit for a snack, sandwich for lunch, fruit for an afternoon snack and then the CSIRO for dinner.

It took heaps of effort on my part to start with as I'm the sole Cook and shopper - and I had to purge the house of snacks which I then missed as well but I would recommend it - it's done DH the world of good

I lost about 5-6kg with my fitness pal early last year. I just found that by looking up what I was planning on cooking or eating for each meal before preparing it helped. I could easily see whether it was a good choice or not and how many calories per serving. Sometimes I'd decide it wasn't a good option at all (or would work out how many calories I'd need to work off)

I've successfully lost nearly 10Kg via the Biggest Loser Shannon Ponton 8 week challenge.

Have done 2 challenges, the last with the assistance of a personal trainer outside of the challenge.

My husband has been my supporter, however I've found at times he's little to no support. Whenever we have a argument he seems to revert to name calling and those names always include the words "fat cow" or worse "fat ****ing ****.

I've being using the my fitness pal for weight loss ticker only as everything it offers is also offered in via the Biggest Loser club....which gives you weekly diet laid out and exercise regime. All you have to do is do what the site tells you every day and you get the 1200cal of food and 600cal of exercise.

Yeah he's a bit hard to live with at times...especially when nicotine cravings are kicking in which is when it seems to happen most.
