Our little one's great granddad brought one for our car and I read the back of the packet and it said something along the lines of it is a way to let other drivers know there is a baby in the car and they should take extra care, Now they should be taking care anyway!! And who knows if it works!! But they are kinda cute and hey if someone slows down a little from seeing it maybe it will save their life as well as yours and your babies, gotta be a win win there.

We dont have one as I think that if somebody is going to crash into you they will regardless of a sign. Should I contact the RTA? we never had one with Arden, its been awhile since we had a bub so perhaps things have changed maybe?

Never heard of it being the law, if it is then a lot of people are breaking it, myself included lol

I don't think its law, well I've never heard it... We have one, doesn't seem to work though, more like an 'L' plate, more people want to overtake us, maybe they think we'll drive too slow...?

ive never heard that , but its good to have one .. i have very dark tinted windows and a unsuspecting family car , i get roused on for parking in the parents with prams so it been handy as ive had to point at it a few times to prove ive got kids ( then they say sorry when i drag the kids out .. tsk tsk)

Not law but when I worked in emergency services, it was something some people say you should have if you have a bad accident. It lets ambos and police etc know there is potentially a child in the car, if somehow they miss seeing the seat from the extent of the car being damaged. Horrible to think of but having said that we had a teddy one that kept falling off so it's now hanging on James' door handle!

I'm almost positive its not the law. As Tan said, it's not going to stop people driving like idiots around you, it's so emergency services know to help the baby / small child in an accident. That said it's only supposed to be displayed while the child is in the car for that very reason - you wouldn't want people searching for a child in the case of a serioud accident when said child is actually safe back at Grandma's house IYKWIM.

I don't drive any differently around cars with a baby on board sign. If anything when I see one on a car that is being driven badly/dangerously I tend to be a bit more judgemental, kind of like "gee, I can't believe they are driving like that when they have kids in the car".

We've never had those signs but I can see how having one on could be useful... trying to drive, especially when you can't stop on a freeway, with a screaming child is a definite handicap. I don't drive but my DH agrees that he would struggle to drive if I wasn't able to sit in the back with our baby/toddler when doing long trips. You'd hope that when people see the sign they realise that your child could be throwing a tantrum and that you might not be 100% attentive to the road.

It's not law - apparently it's so that if there is an accident they know to look for a baby.
Urban myths about cars being towed away after an accident with bubs under the seat or something equally horrible.

I have always thought it was because of whan Tan said about if you have an accident. My hossy gives you one on discharge for free.

thank you ladies, I never thought of that in regards to an accident gives me something to think about. We have very dark tinted windows and have been told off about parking in parents with prams, until they see the kids and do a double take. Our car is a v8 that has a few modifications so I guess they wouldnt expect that.

I'm wondering whether we are the only parents that struggle to drive with children crying in the back seat now... I really thought that's what the signs were for... I didn't really even think much about looking for a child after an accident... 'cos most people seem to leave them permanently attached anyhow... even if the child isn't on board.

Maybe my DH just needs to learn to tune out? If I dared to mention that other parents in BB say they aren't affected by a crying child in the backseat then he'd just crack it though

This is also my understanding. I use to be in the SES and also work in the Emergency Service.

I never knew they were for emergency services. Great idea if that is what they are really intended for, but as a pp said, they seem to live in cars all the time. If that is the genuine reason then (A) there should be some sort of education programme because I (and none of my girlfriends) have one and (B) there should be regulation to make sure it is taken down if the kids aren't with you.

Bath - DD#2 frequently screams when we're in the car. FWIW sometimes I can shut it out and sometimes it almost drives me mad so I understand where your DH is coming from.

It's interesting you posted this, because just today I was thinking about how often I see cars with those signs on the back window and the driver is SPEEDING!!!! what is with that????
Quite often, those cars are the ones overtaking me!?!!?
What's with that? Doesn't make sense to me! They have the sign on their car to warn other drivers yet they aren't being very "road smart" themselves - go figure!! lol

We thought about getting one, you can buy them at BigW etc...
