When was your elective c/s booked?

Nope I'm not pregnant, I was just thinking about next time.....

Has anyone been able to book their c/s for their due date? I always read about them being done at anywhere from 37-39 weeks, is this so you don't go into labour beforehand? The reason I ask is that historically I go overdue with my babies (8 & 10 days) so there would be no reason why I'd have to have my c/s booked in earlier than the due date.

With DS I was booked for the 10th January - he was due the 16th. So 39 + 1.

I think it depends on the OB though, cos my sister's OB books hers in usually at around 38.5 weeks - last one was at 37 weeks.

I read a post of yours a little while ago about choosing the date of your babies birth being very 'arbitrary'; so despite not willing to put your body through the motions to try for a VBA2C, why don't you wait to go into labour, so it's an emergency C/S?

If you have a history of going over, it seems possible that it would happen again so if you were to book an elective date I would request it at 41 weeks. Elective CS babies already run the risk of needing to be in SCN because they have not had the chance to get rid of mucous etc, so imagine booking yours at 37-39 weeks, when you have a history of being closer to 42weeks... just seems wrong, and I imagine it would only make the birth experience less empowering, whereas if you do choose an elective, this will be your chance to have a perfect birth and you want the results to be that little one is in your arms after birth.

Hey Sarah, ours was booked for 39 weeks exactly, we were given the option of booking for 3 days later as well. When we arrived at the hospital, I was already 8cms, and the OB told us next time I might have to be booked in for 38 weeks.

Nic if I arrived at 8cm I would be stoked!

CM the problem is mentally I can't prepare myself to go into labour to just have another c/s. I would love to have a VBA2C but mentally I can't do it, I can't get my brain to stop thinking about what happened the last two times & I know it would affect the labour. The thought of deliberately going into labour & then going striaght for a c/s doesn't work for me either. However if my c/s was booked for 40 weeks (or even if it had to be earlier) & I went into labour before that I'd be going for it. Sounds silly I know, but if I happened to go into labour I'd go with the flow and try my hardest to get that baby out but I'm not willing to prepare for labour again just to have everything come crashing down a third time.

Nikolaus - emergency....no SCN straight into my room

Wilhelm - due on the 25th Jan - c/s 16th...waters broke on table - again straight in my room...no SCN

Vyolett....emergency on the 2nd Sep as I was in labour and yet again my waters broke on the table BUT booked for the 5th of Sep - due 13th september - no SCN - breast feed in recovery

Mateauz - due on the 13th of Jan - c/s the 8th....waters broke waiting in the prep room - in SNN due to cord being around his neck and being blue and not breathing when born

I also had generals with all 4.

going through one failed VBAC is heart wrenching enough but the risks of complications after having 2 c/s is extremely high..internal bleeding, internal tears of the c/s scar, let alone the emotional scaring involved to your mind for maybe failing again. Its not as easy trying for a VBAC after having an unsuccessful one

Sarah like you my babies are late being born at 41 and 42 weeks.

Anyway even with my late arrivals every pregnancy is different, I wanted the latest date possible for bubs arrival, OB said that he doesn`t like doing them any earlier then 38 weeks and usually no later then 39 weeks.

Our blue bundle of joy will be arriving on 17th June, at exactly 39 weeks, I was given two dates, the other date was 5 days earlier which was too early for me, OB was happy I picked the later date and it was nice to be given the choice to do so, even weirder is right along we had a feeling bubs would be here on the 17th!!

I do find it a bit strange that this bubs will be arriving so early compared to Matthew and Adrian but I also see their point to doing it at this stage, the last thing they want is an emergency c/sec.

In saying all this I also see a number of women have gone into labour or are very close to dilating when it comes time for their c/sec, I wonder if this happens as the brain isn`t worried about going into labour IYKWIM.

In some ways I wouldn`t be at all surprised if my body does something weird on me and decide to go early.

Also my OB has been very good with my dates, he`s gone on what I`ve told him not what the ultrasound or my last bleeding told him, there`s been no swapping and changing dates due to u/s dates like other OB`s have done to me in the pass.

It`s been good to know way in advance as to bubs birth date, I was told 6 weeks ago and I also know it`ll be after lunch time.

Sarah (and Maz), I am sorry if my suggestion seemed insensitive; I have seen other women suggest it for their own experiences and wondered if it was an option for you. I did not mean any offence, and I am sorry if it came across like that.

Hun, I booked mine for my EDD. We (my OB and I) talked thought my pregnancy, and always said I would labour first, but if, by EDD baby was not here, then CS would happed.

So my DS was blissfully born on his EDD by elective CS.

Not sure what I will do next time... I plan to think about it, if and when I get there... Good on you for facing it now, and working it out.

Having a failed VBAC (even though I don't think I failed exactly) makes it very very difficut to trust your body to do the right thing & can make you very frightened of going into labour again. Having one emergency c/s can crush your trust in your body, but having two (or more) is very very hard on your confidence.

CM - to be honest...its hard to hear suggestions from other's who haven't walked in our shoes.

Trying and failing for a VBAC is an extremely emotional crippling thing to go through as a woman. You question your ability as a mother full stop when you have unsuccessfully failed from wanting to do the most natural and god given trait so many other woman seem to breeze through. Its almost like a slap in the face! Going through trying to birth your child naturally only to be sliced open and having the child forcefully removed from your womb takes away some of your dignity as a female.

While others may see c/s as an easy resort....its the emotional baggage that moves in long after your baby has been born that is the crusher

DS was booked in for 23rd May, he was due on 2nd June so 38+4. However, he did decide to make an appearance over a week before the booked date on 11th May (36+6). I laboured for 2 hours beforehand due to getting organised to get to the hospital and waiting for the ob etc. My c/s was due to placenta praevia so once I got to hospital they had to slow things down until they were ready to do the c/s which was now classed as emergency.

Anyway, I think mine was booked for the 38th week because of the praevia and it was risky for me to be in labour I guess with chance of prolapse, haemorraghing etc. I guess for you, Sarah, there would be no reason not to request a date on or past your due date going by history.

When I arrived at the hospital for our c/s with DS and was told how far I was dilated then taken to a labour room..I was secretly excited and terrified at the same time. When they asked if I wanted to attempt a VBAC I got even more scared. I was lying on my back - though I don't think I would've moved to another position, so I knew this wasn't the best option, I was already strapped up to the monitor and they inserted the needle in my hand as a "just in case"
All I could think was, I've been here before..on my back, strapped to a machine, needles in hands, contracting, sucking the life out of the gas...it was a familiar path that had ended with my confidence being shattered first time, and which I wanted to avoid the second time. So I chose the c/s. I do have trouble dealing with it, but then other days I know it was right for my emotional well being.
Sarah, I think you are an ABSOLUTE LEGEND for educating and empowering yourself with attempting a VBAC with Juliette..

Sarah, after a hard preg, I booked mine yesterday for the day before my EDD.
I haven't had a failed VBAC, but I'm almost certain after a four day labour last time this one won't progress either. If I go before then, well great, we'll give it a go, but I'd rather have the whole experience positive, than be crushed again.

I was booked in for an elective at 38.5. Part of the reason for this date was my other being born at 34 weeks. I went into labour 12 hours before and ended up with an emerg c/s...
