I hear if you have green eyes - you should wear blue eyeshadow.

If you have brown eyes - purple eyeshadow...

I have autumnal colouring, but don't fit into a classic colour chart. What colour and cut of black dress (eg shiney black, matt black, charcoal...) and what accessories will you wear?

Regarding the colour system of Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer try Googling it. It's an excellent system that will give you an indication of what colours suit you are what colours don't.

I am a winter, typified by my very dark hair and fair skin with a pink under tone as opposed to (not) a golden. If I wear autumn tones i look really washed out. My mother is a Autumn person and if she wears my winter range of colours SHE looks washed out.

However there are some people who are a blend of two seasons so don't expect it to be hard-and-fast. When it comes to make up and colour choice of clothing it's an art: follow rough guidelines but don't adhere to things in a strict sense because there will always be exceptions. It's people who can maybe bend the rules a little bit that often look the classiest.

Regarding the best eye shadow: it's very hard to say without seeing you but if in doubt keep it subtle. How dark is your hair?

Ta, I haven't studied make-up but did a lot of colour theory at uni... and there is a lot that relates. What colour is your hair? that often guides you as to your season. Working out the exact tone of your skin is really important and a lot of the 'high end' make up brands like Clinique will help you find out. My skin is actually very close to neutral (between golden and rose) which means I can 'get away' with a lot. A good clue as to what tone your fair skin is whether you can wear gold or silver jewellry: autumns can wear gold, winters can wear silver. Do you have a preference? Once again, it's not hard-and-fast. I'm going to look for a good site now too!

Don't worry about the dress colour, start with your eye colour.

Ewww, blue - no go with green eyes. Although to be honest I always say if you're comfortable with a colour, then it's yours.

I have the same colouring and tones as you (and trained in makeup), well I am going back to brown from platinum blonde tonight...

Anyway, if you want to highlight your eyes, go for the opposite colours on the colour wheel. Purples and pinks and bronze-golds look AMAZING with green eyes.
Stay away from black eyeliner and mascara, it's too harsh for pale skin. Warm browns are the way to go.
Daytime I wear light eyeliner and mascara in soft brown. Cover lids with a buff or soft pink - excellent "natural"look.
Nightime - just go a bit heavier on the eyeliner - don't draw all the way towards your nose, draw about halfway and make the line a bit thicker towards the outside. Smudge it with a cotton bud for the "smoky look". Use a base shade (beigy/brown) all over the lid, give depth with a nice chocolate brown (follow the line of your eye socket from the outer corner), and for the grand finale, highlight with a gold/bronze just under your brow bone (is that a bone lol?). Sometimes I put bright bronze in a fine line just above my eyelashes on the lid - and there you go CATWOMAN! No seriously, it's a great look.
Don't go heavy on the lipstick/gloss or you'll look like a clown. #1 rule - choose to highlight either lips OR eyes.

Do have a play before you go out - if you are not comfortable you'll feel it all night.

I'm more an autumn colour person.... brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin with freckles. I can wear pinks, as long as they're dusky. I was once told by a cosmetician (if that's a word) that I should wear green eyeshadow, so I tried it and I looked like I'd gone two rounds in the ring with Anthony Mundine LOL

I agree that you should get a few tiny samplers and try a few colours..... do you know anyone in nutrimetics who could come and do a colour party at your place? That would let you play

Yep, you sound like an autumn Christine... I can only wear pink if it's icey (think coconut ice) ... any duskiness makes me looked washed out.

Thanks for clarifying the pinks !
Try the body shop, they will do a trial for you - most of the colours I mentioned come in a 4 colour palette, either the warm or cool will give you alot of choices and last forever, it's very soft and easy to apply.

Misty - I take my hat off to anyone that can wear/apply green eyeshadow......

Regarding warm and cool colours: many people don't realise that there are warm blues and cool reds (for example). Not all blues and greens are cool... and not all reds and yellows are warm. Take yellow for example, often a tricky colour for people to wear; there are golden yellows and sulfur yellows (think of sulfur crested ****atoos). People with warm/golden skin tones wear warm yellows... people with cool skin tones (eg winter people) can wear cool sulfur yellows. So even though I am a winter, I look good in cool yellows but shocking in golden yellows. Same applies to orange. I can only wear the coolest of oranges which can be hard to find but I have a particular orange cardigan that i look great in. Wish i could find a good site that explains it all.
