This thread is SO timely. I have curly hair which gets attacked by straighteners all the time. I HAVE to wash it every second day or it's a grease ball.
I decided these school hols I would give my hair a holiday too. I have stretched the washing out to every third day and I only straightened it once (when i was meeting up with someone for the first time and i didn't want to turn up all dishevelled!). It seems to be enjoying the time off. I might keep at it a bit longer.

I actually didn't think it was possible to go up to a week - I am envious of you guys!

ETA: a hairdresser once told me to buy some 'in between washes' product which makes your hair look less greasy. Has anyone seem/tried it?

Just wondering though, when you only wash your hair once a week or so, how often do you shower? Do you wear a shower cap or something, or just tie your hair back? Even on my "off" days when I don't wash my hair I still shower and tie my hair in a sort of half bun, but it still gets damp.
I shower ever day and I throw my hair up into a high bun...it does get a little damp but not to bad.

i have shockingly frizz prone hair that is just disgusting without product in it daily - and i don't like putting product on product so it's washed every morning (sometimes i'll skip a morning on saturday if we're home and doing housework and things. i have weird regrowth from pregnancy/bf so lots of odd lengths, and it just frizzes so bad if its not slicked back fresh from the shower! hate it!

Aha, I was going to ask how often you all brush your hair too

I wash every 2-3 days, I have awful hair, it's oily up top & frizzy down below. It only really looks good after I've washed it; once I've slept on it , it looks dirty & frizzy. And I hardly ever brush it - when I do it's usually before a wash - because that makes the whole thing even worse.

I used to have beautiful long silky (mostly) straight hair; these days it is a frizzy curly mess
Tried a lot if different brands (including one the was $70 for 500ml!!!)
Holy moly, what was in it? was it good?

When my hair was long, I found I washed it less, maybe every 4-5 days. Now that it is short I have to wash it every 2-3 days, and by day 3 it is pretty gross and oily.

When I use my GHD hair straightener I find it does get oily quicker and I am usually washing it a day earlier than I normal would.

I use head & shoulders shampoo and conditioner. Ever since I moved to Adelaide 3 yrs ago, I find the lack of humidity makes the dandruff worse

Every 3 to 4 days here (and yes I shower my body every day). My hair is thick and past my shoulders. I do find lately as I need to use my hairdryer more often that I have to wash on the 3rd day rather than the 4th. Sometimes I do use a dry shampoo to get through an extra day, that is if my hair is fine in the morning but I know it will flake at midday. I try to just use a wide tooth (rake) comb as it allows the wave to stay in my hair, otherwise I just use a brush. Don't use any styling product, but I think that needs to change.

I wash mine about once a week. If it gets any longer than that it is a bit feral. My hair doesn't go oily... just looks a dirty colour (I have blonde hair).
My hair is pretty fine, and until recently was halfway down my back. Just cut it to below my shoulders, so might have to wash it a bit more often I don't straighten it, unless I'm going somewhere 'special' so it only gets a blowdry

I'm glad no one took offense to my question asking if people shower in between washes. I read it back just now and got worried people would think I was calling them dirty non-showerers, lol. But I was just genuinely curious about how people kept their hair dry during body showers. I get frustrated when I've straightened my hair then it gets damp when I have a body shower and I have to re-straighten it to get rid of the frizzies. Might have to invest in a shower cap

My neighbour rang my door bell today and halfway through a conversation with him I remembered I hadn't brushed my hair yet today! LOL! Luckily when I came back inside and checked my hair it didn't look noticeably unbrushed, hehe.

I have frizzy hair too. It's more about the products post wash that you use rather than the ones you use daily. I have a refresher spray in between days, so you only need to use product on the first day and refresh after that. When I use curling product to defrizz my hair I actually end up with better hair after a sleep with the product. (And please if you use product in your hair and sleep in it... protect your pillow with a towel and turf in the morning... or you'll end up with residue on your pillow case... or worse in your pillow which can lead to bacteria and pimples and all sorts of yuckies!)

I wash mine every 2nd day. If I don't it gets quite oily and even if I brush it, it can look like I have stuck my finger in a powerpoint!

I wash and condition mine every day. I feel gross if I don't have it washed and styled... I don't feel clean if I have a shower and leave my hair unwashed. It doesn't take me long to blow dry... like 5 mins? But its fairly short, almost shoulder length. I don't straighten it every day... it gets too dry if I do that.

Questions - if you don't wash it every day, do you still wet it in the shower? Or just not wet it at all?
and also... Don't you worry it smells if you go like a week between washes?

I HAVE to have a shower every morning and I HAVE to wash my hair, other wise I worry I will smell like my bed... also I sweat heaps at night, I gotta wash that out Or even just the pollution/stuff in the air from the day before... or cooking smells! And if I go a day or something without washing I feel like my skin is oilier too. I dunno. As I said I just don't feel clean unless my hair is freshly washed too, that's really the only reason why I do it every day.

I just throw it up messy and it doesn't get wet. And I generally shower twice a day (I have too otherwise I don't feel right)
Going a week between doesn't worry me too much, but if I have been somewhere and my hair smells then I'll wash it. Like if I had a big night out it would be washed before going out so it looks good, and then after cos it is all grotty...

I'm actually in the process of trying to stretch my hair washing out. Everything I've read recently suggests that the longer the hair the longer you should go between washes, because of the fact the natural oils aren't getting to tips and your hair will be unhealthier the more frequent you wash it (weird huh?!).

My problem isn't so much oily hair, but my scalp goes all awful due to scorisis (sp?). But I'm still trying. And TBH my hair is looking a lot healthier for sure.
*ding ding* you get the gold star. This is actually correct. The more often you wash your hair, the oilier it actually gets. This is because you are stripping your hair and it then produces more... and your hair will be healthier if you don't overwash it. It balances itself and once you get past the painful adjustment period, you'll find that your hair doesn't actually become very oily at all and it is a lot healthier! I used to wash mine a couple of times a week, but stretched it over a period of time and can leave it a couple of weeks no probs. My hair is so much healthier and better looking now (this is with me colouring it too) than it has been in years!! ..... oh and it's definitely easier to stretch out the washing time if you have hair long enough to tie up lol... but seriously, the oils balance and for most people, their hair will be less oily than it was

Sibbie, my hair doesn't smell bad at all. I wet it every day to just restyle it... not wet under the shower, but with the spray bottle.

Lenny, there is a non wash shampoo... Avon had the only one for a while... but I did see one the other day at Woolies... can't think of the brand, but I think it may have been a spray. What it does is absorb some of the oil. I've tried the Avon one and found it good

Ahhhh Okay, my understanding with the not-washing-evening-out-the-oils thing was that you still needed to 'wash' your hair with water? I guess it makes sense that the oils would still even out between washes with shampoo.

I used to be able to wash my hair every second day when it was long.... I kinda miss that! Easy to have it nice and styled one day then chucked up into a bun the next heh.

(btw just to clarify I was in no way implying that people aren't clean unless they wash their hair, I know you all shower daily :P I just have a 'thing' about it with my own hair)

lol Rouge and Glamourcide... yup... when my hair is shorter, I can just do the "finger" brush... when it is longer I need to comb it cos it's curly and think and gets knots.

Mylitta, shower daily and same as Glam, wash up the nape of my neck and splash my face. When my hair is longer and if I've straightened it I'll pop on a shower cap or tie it up on top of my head and just do a retouch on the back with the straightening iron.
