Clomid for LPD #2

DH rang... I think I would have asked more questions, but I can always ring back later.

The specialist just suggested that it may take us longer, but gave us no more information than that.

From reading the web site for my acupuncture clinic, male infertility is defined as having a sperm count lower than 20 million, motility being lower than 30%. So we have about a quarter of the minimum number of sperm, and only half of them can swim as well as they should!

It's tough on them too and they deal with it differently. Give him time. Do something special for yourself if you can so you can *manage* him processing. They are a special bunch when they are hurt :rolleyes: Just wish they would let us in occasionally.

Thanks for that info Michelle. I am within normal weight range - does your weight make a difference to the dose??? I'm just a bit stressed cause EVERYTHING I've read says 50mg is the standard dose and I'm taking half of that.

I've decided not to tempt fate this month, I don't want to end up with OHSS!! I know how rare it is on clomid but knowing my "luck" lately I'd end up with it. One of my girlfriends had it during her first ivf treatment and was hospitalised for a week, was pretty horrific, so that's enough to scare some sense into me at the moment.

BW, am so sorry to hear about your DH, just what you guys needed hey??? One of my girlfriends (same one actually) has endo, PCOS, a blocked tube and her DH has issues too - just seems sooooo unfair!!!

Take a couple of days to get over the latest blow and then we'll keep fighting this battle together! I didn't realise you were in Windsor, I'm in Penrith. Don't think I'll be driving out to Rozelle any time soon though! hehehe.

Well the latest for me is that my friend IS having twins. Ooooh, I'm a bad friend because I didn't take the news well at all. She didn't tell me, my girlfriend (same one again!) called to soften the blow first, god love her.

I am sorry I haven't been in to see you all. I have been feeling incredibly tired. Exhausted! Saturday I started feeling quite icky and yesterday and today the same. I am embracing the feeling eagerly!!!! I am not going to whinge! Wednesday at 1.45pm is my u/s. I am not going to pretend to be zen about it girls. I am scared, but also feeling positive. I am reminding myself that I have had 4 healthy pregnancies with live haealthy babies and I can and will do it again! I have some info on prednisone that is being used at St.Margs hosp in London in the recurrent miscarriage clinic there. I have talked to my ob on the phone about it and we are going to discuss it further on Wednesday.

Butterfly - I am so sorry for the rollercoaster you are on. As Michelle says a repeat test is a good idea. This is so much to deal with - your own issues as well as your partners. Keep the end in sight Butterfly. You can do this and there are ways around it. Le'ts hope and pray that your partners count rises. Is he having acupuncture also??? Have you heard of the Jocelyn Centre? It is a clinic that treats women/men trying to conceive. Some of the stuff is pretty rigid however, I believe their success rate is pretty amazing...

Willow - I understand why you would want to increase your dose. I wouldn't be too concerned about hyperstimulation on 50mgs. Sometimes 25 is enough to get some women 'going' - otherwise I understand how frustrating it is to wait ANOTHER month. :hugs: Willow.

Michelle - How are you going? You must be nearing the end of your TWW??? How are you feeling? Are you seeing an Endocrinologist yet? I am sorry that I have been out of touch. I look forward to hearing your news.

Just wanted to say hi and see if I can join this great thread! :hello:

I am currently into my 7th cycle of LPD (8-9days) since fully weaning DS. I've been to the fertiltiy specialist and had the BT's which pretty much confirmed this - so Dr prescribed clomid or FSH injections for me. I had a GTT today to double check I haven't got PCOS but apart from PCO I didn't have any of the other indicators. Also, I had gestational diabetes in my first PG and was meant to have the GTT sooner to check for diabetes after I gave birth but never got round to it til now.

Anyway, to cut a long story short (as some of you would have heard it around the other threads) we're still TTC naturally but clomid is looking more and more enticing. My big thing, like you flowerchild (virgo too! 24/8) is I really want to try and be zen about it and hope that when my body is ready it will come around but I'm also torn cause I want more than 2 and worry how long it might all take.

Anyway, just wanted to add best wishes to everyone here and lots of :bluedust:

I think I ovulated yesterday - felt pains all day long! Funnily enough, knowing DH's sperm is bad I really just see it as bringing me one step closer to clomid, rather than being any real chance of pregnancy.

Oh to be on clomid and have regular, predictable ovulation!

Looks like a few of us might be O around the same time. Not that it means much to me though, the dream will probably end in just over a week. Hey! I just thought of something good about LPD, no 2ww - just 8-9 days for me! :p

Anyway, on a more positive note I got a positive OPK last night and this morn and very feint this arvo so by all accounts I should O today or tomorrow - CD 19/20. This is the earliest I have O since weaning, usually around CD 22-24. Hope it's a good sign! Even if it's not a good egg, means I'll get AF earlier than anticipated and I can start the next cycle over rather than waiting the usual 32-34 days. I'm just wondering whether I should go to the local GP and ask for a progesterone test 7dpo to check my level and compare with my last cycle watch. They don't know I'm seeing a FS, got a referral from another dr. What do you think???

chelle - were you asking me about b/f??? or maybe you meant BT's??? or maybe it wasn't even directed at me???

Getting a progesterone level won't hurt... shouldn't matter that you are also seeing another doctor. It would help just for your own peace of mind, I think.

Yes i would get a prog test, it will help you let you know when you ovulate, well thats what im doing anyway... I cant even tell when I did this month, but i did practise around day 14, so time will tell.

Deb - if you are out there can I ask a question please?? I was wondering about OPK for early HCG.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up (mine especially) but I have been so unwell this week with the flu again and trying to study. I felt really nauseous this morning, but a weird sort of nausea so I did an OPK and got 2 strong lines (test almost as dark as the control) I usually don't get a positive OPK until the days leading up to ovulation but have never checked after ovulation to know if I have lines prior to AF. Am I over thinking this?? I am kind of regretting doing the test because I so badly don't want to be disappointed later this week if AF arrives.

And yes Willow - I am getting better after getting MUCH worse Friday.

I am sure Deb would be much more equipped to answer your Q than me, but I have read somewhere that OPK's can detect HCG, something about similar beta strands or something???? Can't remember where I read it, think it was in these forum's, hopefully someone can point you in that direction. Why don't you do a PG test?

I think I O'd yesterday. As I don't temp I'm not exactly sure when so maybe I'll go to dr's in a week and check out my prog level. Last cycle it went from 28- 1dpo down to 9.9 -
7dpo and got AF 8dpo. Anyone here get O pains??? I had them quite bad Monday and yesterday and this morning have gone, what with a positive OPK yesterday morning and feint yesterday afternoon anyone wanna guess when O would occur??? Also, I noticed a little bit of blood after BD last night (could this be O spotting???)

Hi girls. Sorry I haven't been around as I have been away again. Had a big thing in LA but made sure I was back for my specialist appointment today.

Can't believe how our little group has grown. I'm not going to name you all now as with my memory I am bound to leave someone out. But a big hello to you all and I hope this post finds you all well.


I had my appointment this morning. Loved the OB. He looked at all my notes and went through my history with me. Took loads of blood. As I thought, at this stage he doesn't feel that there is anything specifically wrong. No call for Clomid or the such just now. He has booked me for a Laproscopy and Hysteroscopy (hope that's how you spell them) on the 25th of this month. He says I could do with a flush through as there doesn't appear to be anything else obvious at this time. He also added that a lot of his patients have fallen pregnant straight away after having this procedure and he has high hope for me. I don't want to get my hopes up but it was encouraging.
I felt a bit teary when I left because I hadn't thought of surgery. It is only a day procedure and he said it is very safe but it was a bit of a shock at first. What with that and the cost (didn't know at the time I could claim from my insurance). I asked my husband if we should go through with it. He said if we didn't we would probably always be saying "what if?". He also said if we don't have it done we may really be saying that's it on our TTC journey. The OB had said first things first, but his aim was for me to go home with one more beautiful healthy baby in my arms. And he didn't make me feel at all guilty about my age. Treated me as a normal human being and not a geriatric. He did say that we obviously love children and why didn't we start earlier. I said yes, we do love our children but we didn't realise it until we had some!!

I feel as if a little weight has been lifted. I have been getting mild migraines the past couple of days. As I have never had them before I thought something was wrong with me. A friend who suffers from them described my exact same symptoms before I even had chance to described what I had experienced. I was so relieved. I think it was underlying stress leading up to this appointment. I feel much better now. He originally booked me in for the 20th but I had to change that date as it was exactly a year ago on that day that I learnt we had lost Luke. Didn't want to be in hospital on the same day this year.

Anyway, I will be around a bit more now as no more planned trips for a while.
Hope I haven't bored you all silly.

OH MICHELLE!!!! Now, I am a little *nervous* about answering your question so I will answer it in my experience!!! In my experience you will get two lines on an opk before you get a positive on a hpt. Naturally your LH is lower at the end of your cycle so you *shouldn't* be getting a positive or close to it now - especially when this isn't your norm. (if you often get 2 dark lines than this theory and using opk's doesn't work) I am so excited I am squirming in my seat. However, we must remember that the only definitive is a positive preg test. Have you got a lab at work? Could you just take some blood, spin it down and grab a test strip from the fridge????? Of course you can tell I have *never* done this!!!!!! I am so hoping that this is it for you. I too felt a bit queasy before I tested - nothing horrific just a bit *off*. :hug: :hug: I will pop in later to read what you have to say. The other thing is that a sensitive hpt may pick up hcg at 10dpo - I got my positive on 9dpo with this baby...

It is great to be doing something proactive and the procedures are really simple ones and you shouldn't suffer any ill effects. Roll on the 25th!!!!! I have missed you so it's good to hear from you! :hug: Yes, tomorrow is u/s day. Yep, I break out in a little sweat when I think of it!!!! My experiences with u/s in the past 16 months haven't been a hoot - however what I am reminding myself is that prior to that they were joyous exciting occassions without a thought of darkness. This is where I am trying to stay!!!! Nausea is on and off so I am embracing 'my friend' and thanking it's reasssurance! My husband keeps saying how he hasn't had a proper conversation with me for a few weeks because I keep falling asleep each night!!! Poor love!

Aussie - go the prog level. This is good for you to know and to guage how things are going. It's a bit of reassurance. LOL at the short luteal phase = short tww!!! I too have thought of that and that was my only consolence in the LPD thing!!!

Thanks for all your positive affirmations girls. I am absolutely terrified of doing a HPT at this stage. I think it is too early for me to get a positive so I may just have to keep you (and myself) in suspense for a bit longer. No symptoms as such - just feel off still from this flu but getting better.

Well this morning was negative on a different OPK and a HPT BUT (trying not to lose all hope) it is early and I don't usually get a positive before 14dpo. My last cycle was 29 days and I think I ovulated on the Monday this cycle so if AF is not here by Monday, I'll test again.

For a start a 1.45pm appointment is a bad idea - remember this girls! It took all of my ability not to bail on the appointment. I can't explain it - I know I can survive if my baby wasn't *there* it is just that waiting - the probe goes in and you know he is looking looking and talking all the time saying I am just looking around and checking everything.... Finally - "this looks as good as it gets Deb". I squealed!!!!! (squealing with the dildo cam in place is a little err... odd!!!! :eek: ). Anyway, Egbert measures exactly 6w5days, heartbeat gorgeous, implantation fabulous, endometrium beautiful, babies shape perfect!!!! Am I a happy woman, right now - you betcha!!!!!!!
So, my first Clexane injection happened today - bit ouchy but I don't care! :rolleyes: I went to see my midwife after the visit and we both had a little cry.... There was a woman in hard labour and I just know in another 30-32 weeks that will be me!!! I am feeling excited. We are going out to dinner tonight to celebrate and we will tell our other kids. I want them all to be a part of this pregnancy just like they were for the others (aside from the last one).

I am sorry to just begin with myself I just couldn't help my excitement. The phone has been running hot with friends checking on me and I was eager to let all my friends in here know!

B542 - Welcome to our little corner! I too conceived this baby on cd21 with a usual luteal phase of 10 days... It really all depends on when implantation occurs as to weather a pregnancy will be maintained. It is good to see that your pregnancy is going along so well.

I'm OK Deb. Frustrated and feeling a little doubtful about this conception thing but trying to stay positive without creating an even bigger level of disappointment if AF does show up some time in the next week. Just the usual roller coaster with a few extra bumps. DH and I have been discussing the next step if clomid doesn't help us to get pregnant this cycle or the next which only adds to the bumps.

So glad the scan went well Deb! Were you ever wondering if it was twins??? As a matter of interst did you have an U/S when on clomid and how many dominant follicles if so??? Sorry if you have answered this elsewhere. DH and I wouldn't mind twins at all - having said that I remember laughing at a friend who said they wanted twins straight after my DS was born and said to her "you've got no idea..." At least I wouldn't have to go throught the dreaded TTC#3.

B456 - welcome from a newbie to this thread myself. Any idea why you had LPD??? I'm obsessed with trying to figure out what is causing it in me! I'm on my 7th cycle of 8-9 day LP. This has occurred ever since weaning. My FS reckons B/F has nothing to do with it, but I've also got a Billings Ovulation Method instructor who says it's really common for mums who "recently" weaned.

Aussie chick, I'm with you - I'd lurrrrve twins!! And for the exact same reason, to NEVER have to go through this heartache again! I'm pretty much aware of what I'd have in store, my best friend has twins born 7 weeks before my daughter and is expecting her second set :eek: !

I think everyone exagerates the chances of twins on clomid though, I've got a couple of friends who've taken it, no twins there and I don't think I've seen anyone here on BB who has clomid twins?? I might be wrong though. Shame though, I'd love it!!!

I too would love to know why I am having these problems and given long enough I think it probably would have corrected itself (must point out here, I don't have the patience to wait for 'long enough'! that's why I'm on clomid). I don't know that I have a short LP as such, but definately have less than great ovulation and prog. levels following my surgery. Then again, I've seen the photos taken by my gyno, and it weren't pretty! No wonder my poor ovaries aren't coping too well!

Hope I'm not intruding on your thread but I've been following it for a while and just love hearing all the HAPPY bubba stories!! CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BFP'S and goodluck on those still to come. (Great news with the scan Flowerchild-- I totally empathise with your apprehension beforehand).
I just wanted to ask a question of all you LPD "experts". Can LPD be a cause/reason for m/c? I've had two missed m/c's this year and as I've not had trouble concieving I've never charted or really used OPK's. After doing some reading about the importance of progest. in pregnancy I've decided to look into whther LPD may apply to me. I've always had a regular 28 day cycle but apparently that does not make a diff. with LPD. I suppose I am a little consumed by my search for answers but at least I don't then feel so powerless and out of control of my bod. Any info./advice you guys can offer will be taken on board. Is this worth investigating or am I wasting my time? With both my preg.s early scans showed bub in right place with heartbeat and no indication of loss until around the 11 week mark. Would bubs have grown to this point if LPD was a factor?

Hope, a luteal phase defect would stop a bub from sticking in the first place. It basically means that AF arrives before the embryo has had a chance to implant properly. Other factors would contribute to late losses, and I don't know a lot about that.

Hope - from what you have said it is unlikely you have an LPD. Do you know what day you ovulate??? I generally have a normal luteal phase (14 days) but have low progesterone, however this is usually an issue in early pregnancy and you are getting much further than this. What testing have you had so far. There are many that can be done to determine if there is any cause for your losses. Check the TTCMCAL forum for the stickie.

Although I didn't know I had m/c'd until around 11 weeks both were missed m/c's and could've been not growing since the seven or eight week mark I really don't know. I'm aware that LPD is mostly linked with issues of conception but have also read that it can contribute to m/c due to low progest. and poor quality uterine lining meaning that bub can't continue to develop past a certain point. I might as well look into it-- at least then I could have progest. prescribed for my nxt pg.:crossfingers:
My GP sent me for a series of blood tests on Monday. Will find out the results soon I hope-- not really sure that anything will come of them. Thanks again guys,

I am sorry for your losses - missed miscarriage is very painful - not knowing that your baby has died is particularly hard to come to terms with... :hugs:

LPD can contribute to very early pregnancy loss, often termed "chemical Pregnancy". To explain if you ovulate on cd21 and bleed on cd29 you lp is only 8 days. If you conceive in that cycle and implant on say cd28 your progesterone level is naturally on it's way down. It takes time for the impanted pregnancy to increase your prog levels and a day or two possibly isn't long enough. So, you get a positive test but then you bleed. A LP onf 8 days makes it more difficult to maintain a pregnancy but not impossible. MOst practitioners like a lp of 12 days or more. Implantation occurs generally (nothing is static though) around 5-7 days post ovulation. It is very difficult (neigh impossible) to pinpoint precise implantation in natural cycles as 5 women could all conceive on the same date but implantation times will vary. This is why some women with short LP will succeed in conceiving and maintaining pregnancy as their implantation may have been earlier...
Low progesterone levels often occur because the beginning of your cycle is a little lacking in hormone. Remember that your body works in sync and usually not just one part of the cycle is needing boosting. This is often where Clomid can be helpful...

If your babies died at 7-8 weeks then this would be highly unlikely due to progesterone insufficiency. It used to be that recurrent early miscarriers were given progesterone pessaries to support the pregnancy but then it was found that this didn't seem to produce better outcomes. It did seem to indicate that low prog levels are indicative of the viability of pregnancy. A nice healthy prog level and a good hcg augurs well. A lowish prog. and hcg will be treated with more caution. As for your endometrium - if a woman has a LPD and conceives it is very accurate that if the pregnancy implants close to the end of her LP the lining will be beginning to break down due to the low prog. However, almost always these are early losses and at the least if an early u/s is done the ob can asess the endometrial condtion. The majority of first trimester losses occur before 6.5 weeks. Some of these losses aren't miscarried and remain inside making a woman think that all is well... If a heart beat (healthy one!) and size and shape look good then the risk factors for miscarriage are drastically reduced.
So maybe for your next pregnancy it might help to have an early scan to asess your baby? I would recommend doing some close charting and opk's and this will give you an idea of when you ovulate and how long your LP is. Thosae prog. levels that you are having done will indicate if you are ovulating and that will be good info too.

I truly know how awfully hard and draining this process is. I wish you a speedy healthy BFP and nice healthy Prog. Levels!!! :hug:

Well, I have had a bit of a worrying 24 horus. I had my first clexane injection as you all know. Well last night I noticed I had a hive like rash on my belly. The injection site bled on and off. I went to bed a bit worried about it all. The rash was worse this morning covering my abdomen. I woke with blood on the sheets from tiny nicks on my legs that I must have scratched in the night.

The rash is bruising which indicates bleeding under the skin for about a 10cm radius to the injection site. My ob saw me quite quickly (mmm!!!) We have stopped the clexane and it is clear that it isn't my friend. I thought that Clexane was gonna be my insurance policy - I have been using chinese herbs and acupuncture and feeling really positive about their use but I was taking the clexane to "cover all bases". However, I am feeling really comfortable about not taking it. Quite clearly I can't safely take it with the reaction I had but I feel like this baby is fine and will stay fine. I believe that I am doing all I can with the herbs and acupuncture and that's the best I can do!

So, that's my latest - never a dull moment hey?

Yes it was a bit scary - I was fearful of bleeding vaginally and still am a bit until the next couple of days passes... My obs isn't worried about that though he feels it would 'in no way impact on the baby'. However, I still feel a little toey... My belly looks like it's been punched!!!

How are YOU? Have you been to Melbourne? I haven't seen any news...
