I have never been to a baptism before and had a look in this forum and discovered that we need to take a present! It is this Sunday so ideas would be lovely.
The most beautiful one I ever saw was a little tooth fairy box, bought from an engraver in Toorak. A photo frame would be a good fall back. Or a lovely children's picture book, like Guess How Much I Love You, or Koala Lou, or Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. I always give children books!
Childrens books are great. Depending on how religious the family is, you can get a Baby's Bible from most bookstores. This is my DS favourite book as it has pictures of a lot of animals and he loves pointing and telling me what they are.
When DS1 was baptised, we got a lot of pewter items like money boxes (3 of the same one!). Other items included a 9ct gold medallion of Jesus and Mary, lovely photo frames, money (which we put in DS bank account), a family tree book for DH and I to complete so DS would know his family history (loved this one!), childrens books, clothes and vouchers for family photos at a professional studio.
I try to avoid toys etc as a baptism present as most kids have so many already.
We had hamish baptised last month and recieved some lovely gifts. Photo frames, photo albums, beautiful teddy bear with his name on the front and on the back was the date and my christening day (expensive), money box (engraved), books, toys etc. I think the most practical is a book and if you just write a short message and sign inside front cover it is more personal. We recieved like 4 silver money boxes and 3 photo albums and we will probably never use them all. I hope this helps.
I have only bought for girls, and I always give them a little silver baby bracelet with their name engraved on it. You could also buy a nice cushion and have bubs name embroided on it?
I just had my friends daughters christening and I got her 4 beautiful outfits from Target and put them in 4 gorgeous gift boxes I bought from the $2.00+ store, wrapped in tissue paper & stacked on top of each other tied together with a big silk ribbon. I did the same for her son, except I bought 4 boys outfits My friend told me she didn't want any picture frames, or anything made of silver that she had to polish,
I'm a bit traditional. I believe that the gifts given at a baptism should have religion basis to them. You can get gorgeous books, prayer cards and short stories from the bible. Best of luck picking your pressie and enjoy your day.
Candles (with a picture of them, their full name, Baptism date and a prayer)
Photo frames with their names engraved on them
Ornamental items
Money
Royal Dalton (is that right?) cutlery and crockery (plates, bowls, cups and egg holder)
Books (Peter Rabbit as well as fairy tales)
Clothes
Oh wow, thanks everyone for the fantastic ideas. I love books too so might go with this option and Nurse Dan thanks for the idea of a short story from the bible. Will see how I go.
Prettybutterfly - gorgeous boxes tied with ribbon always looks amazing and special. I don't even need anything in them I love the look so much
CourtRach - a baby bible sounds like a great idea.
