    DDs christening...

Ok, so I am preparing DDs christening that is scheduled for Feb 2010. I was talking about it with one of my friends who has a DS that is the same age as DD and her DS is being christened in Jan 2010.

She asked me what DP and I were thinking in terms of gifts for the godparents... I was a bit perplexed and said that hadn't thought about it and I was still finding my feet in terms of organising the christening and the associated things (gathering afterwards, gown, forms, invitations, family 'dramas' that will come from this event etc etc).

One reason I was perplexed is because I didn't realise I should be getting the godparents anything...

I haven't thought much else about it until today - a friend of mine makes personalised candles and I wanted to get one made to commenorate the day for DD it will have DDs name, church details, date and the names of her godparents on it as well as the photo that I have included on the invitation and a christening verse on the back (not decided which one yet)

I am also going to get one made for the godmother and godfather with DDs name, church details, date and a verse about being a godparent and a cross pendant with DDs (and if space allows their name) engraved on it.

My friend was saying that her and her DH are paying for a weekend away for their DSs godparents as well as a commenorative candle. Is my thank you gift too 'stingy'... is there something else/more traditional I should be thinking about getting them?

Also with the candles I was thinking of getting some smaller candles done as thank you gifts for the people that attend a bonbonarrie (sp?) of sorts... is that tacky or thoughtful?

I think your gifts are lovely and thoughtful. A cross with both names is so sweet. And I love commenorative Candles I have always wished I could have one for our wedding and DDs dedication. Anyway I think your idea is lovely. For bonboniare or whatever it is I used a tealight (good quality one) in an organza bag with a tag attached with the date and bible verse and then just a thank you for attending, and a little poem about lighting the candle and praying for DD.

typing one handed so will be brief
    we gave:
no gifts for people that came - am in the process of doing thankyou notes when DD lets me - t this rate they will go out with Christmas cards!
no gift for godparents = planning on getting them something for Christmas from DD, talked about this with some people - consensus seemed to be no gift - they are there for moral, emotional and spiritual guidance, not the presents!

DD's baptism was "hitch free" and she was only 8 weeks old when we had it!
if you need any help pm me!

All i did was give a framed picture from the day of the christening.

Being chosen as a godparent is a gift in itself is it not? They are there to be emotional and spiritual guidance for the child because they have a passion for their beliefs... so the privilege should be the gift??

We have DD's christening in 2 weeks and it is the third one that we have done - each time we havent given gifts to the godparents and the same goes for bombonerie.

We both come from large European families who are known for going overboard and most of the christenings we go to dont provide bombonerie either so I wouldnt be too concerned about that.

Thanks ladies - I thought I had totally missed the boat when I didn't know about the gift thing... good to know it is not 'required' as such but DP and I do like the idea of giving them (the godparents) the candles - we are still undecided on the pendant - depends on what we can find.

We will think about the candle bonbonarries - I am thinking of how I would feel about it if I were a guest and recieved one and I am not sure it sits well with me... but I do like the idea for the grandparents maybe... who knows I have lots of time to finalise stuff LOL
