Clare, I don't tell many people this, but I'm not actually the eldest child - Mum had a baby girl when she as 17 and had her adopted. The way it was sprung on me was in some pretty dreadful circumstances and I was only 10 so I found it really hard to deal with for a long time and Mum found it really hard to deal with the incessant questions from me that followed. It would be pretty hard for him to take in and accept if it were just dropped on him.
