Olive - hear you on the tantrums - DS threw one yesterday while shopping in target. I walked off, he walked off straight into the toy dept. Ended up carrying him everywhere yesterday - ala superman style because he just wriggled when I carried him normally.

Are there any good links/ways to deal with tantrums?

I feel like I'm doing it all wrong - generally ignoring him or telling him that I understand his frustration but chucking a tanty isn't the way to go.

We are nearly there with toilet training. Have had 3 accidents in 5 days, so I think give her a little more time and she will have gotten it! She is being such s so and so at the moment. If I ask her to come here she runs away, and she is obsessed with Being different animals. I never know what she is going to be!

There is a lot for having an older sibling. She said to me yesterday " mummy I drawed an M" sure enough I take a look and she has! She knows and recognisis nearly all of the alphabet. She even said to me yesterday" H-A-T hat! " (has-been doing reading eggs with J - thanks Olive!)

I also got some wonderful news. Many will remember that my cousin lost her baby full term while I was pregnant with E. She is pregnant agiain! It is still early days, but really hoping all will be good.

Her Ds ashes are at out holiday house. Nai - yo.u will get to see his tree when you are there in a few weeks time.

    Hi everyone!!

lilima - that is fantastic news about your cousin.

WRT tantrums, if you go into my info page on facebook and check some of the pages I like there are lots of parenting sites/pages/blogs - most are gentle etc in approach and I have found some great stuff relating to behaviour, tantrums, anger etc. Not that I always use it but when I do, I think it is helping.

AFU - DP is out of hossy He is still quite sick and vulnerable in terms of catching any type of illness for the next week or so but the hossy staff said that he came through it well and without any 'major dramas'. I would really hate to see the patients who do struggle or have complications because watching DP go through that and being unable to help him or even give him a hug was the hardest thing I have ever done. I have so much more love and respect for him for the strength he showed and the dignity with which he got through it. He hardly complained at all and just kept saying "It will be over soon". And now it pretty much is. We have all the mental aftermath to get through of course but I am no longer spending every minute petrified he will die of some common everyday ailment or infection. It's great.

In terms of DS, during all of the last few weeks we shifted him into a big bed at my parents and I took the cot sides off here at home. Initially he was great and tended to only get out once to check on me and then he was staying in bed (still waking at night but going down ok in evening). The last two nights have seen him getting out of bed heaps in the evening. 20-30 times I put him back to bed in a two hour period last night and tonight it was about 15 times in 20 minutes. He only went off to sleep so quickly today because he didn't have a day sleep and couldn't hold out. He thinks it's funny when he comes out and runs back to bed only to get out 2 minutes later He won't go back on his own unless I take him. Any suggestions? Do I just keep at it? It's driving me crazy because I know he knows what he should be doing.

    Hope everyone is well. xx

    Great news Kaz.
Yep just keep putting him back. Minimize conversation also. He is prob doing it for the attention. Have you thought of putting a baby gate across his bedroom door?

Great news on your DP Kaz!

I agree with Lilima - just say nothing, minimal eye contact, just turn him around and walk him back to bed. Say goodnight and leave.

Kaz - that is fantastic!!! Hope you and DP can relax a little now and enjoy some good quality family time xxx.

Re DS getting out of bed - how we managed it with DD was we made a rule - she had to stay in bed and stay quiet until a certain time (we have a toddler clock which lights up when its time to get up) or she didn't get some treat. For us it was watching an episode of Dora in the morning - if she stayed in bed and stayed quiet all night, she could watch TV, if she got up too many times no TV. I would put her back in or tell her to be quiet maybe twice and then on the third time it was "Last chance - stay in bed and stay quiet or no TV" and then if she mucked up again, I'd tell her no tv in the morning.

Took her a while to get it but she gets it and now when I put her to bed I say "What's our rule?" and she says "stay in bed stay quiiiieeet!" and most of the time she does.

Might help anyway! Just figure out what reward is going to work for you. We hardly watch TV any more either so its not really reward-based anymore.

Ellie - I so hear you on the double trouble! DD has som kicker tanties and now DS is starting too! This morning when I left for work he threw himself on the floor and kicked his little feet on the ground and he's not even 1yo!!!!!

ETA - Lilima I'm so sorry I missed your cousin's exciting news... that is fantasitc hun, hope it all goes really well!!

Kaz Great news hun... sorry no help on Mr J getting out of bed but what the other girls have posted sounds like great ideas.

Lilima Fabulous news for your cousin. Hope everything goes well.

Not much happening here. DS has taken to hugging and hanging out with older kids when he goes to the inside playgrounds (Monkey mania/Lolliipops). Winter feels like it's been here forever, brrrrrr!

Thanks girls. I have been minimising discussion and putting him back to bed straight away with no fuss. Last night we did end up having a cuddle and quiet talk about going to bed at the last time and he went off to sleep after that and slept through!!!! Tonight I gave him the cuddle and quiet talk before putting him into bed for the first time and he didn't get out once I know it won't last but am thankful for small things at this stage. Plus he went back to daycare today so was probably more tired than normal. We don't read stories before bed here because they have tended to hype him up and signal playtime but last night I realised he was unable to wind down on his own (excited about going back to daycare - he really missed it LOL) so tonight I did the cuddle thing but maybe it is time and he is old enough to have a couple of bedtime stories to help wind down.

I forgot to mention, DP has been given between 10-20% chance of being able to have more kids and we should know within about 12-18months if the swimmers are going to return so that is good news in that it's not final and we will know in the next year or so whether to keep hoping or not.

Kaz10-20% is still a chance. I'll keep everything crossed for DP. Glad to hear that J slept through. Is he still sleeping through?

Thanks Malyna!! Every night is a bit different with J but he has slept through a few times in the past week and other times he wakes me overnight and I can hear him in his room but I don't have to get up. He comes into my room/bed at about 6am-6:30am every morning for a snuggle. It's gorgeous. How is A going with sleep these days?

olive - just wanted to give you a mate.

We're off again today, back to the city. DP is seeing the specialist this afternoon and has another blood test. Hopefully his numbers are high enough and he can come home

I love morning cuddles with Alex.

We are still co-sleeping. Alex still wakes, still needs boob to go to sleep, but now he'll at least roll over and drift off on his own, but I still have to sleep with him. Really hoping that goes away because I've been sleeping with him since he was 6mths old.

Fingers crossed that DP gets to come home.

DP came home - I posted in my other thread and forgot about here! Sorry! Can't ever keep track of who knows what on this journey. I am trouble with some of my fb friends for not specifically posting in there either but I forget that some of them are not friends with DP, only me. And then there are others who find out stuff via text or phone call.........

Just wanted to say that I hate 2 year old molars. That is all.

Oh Kaz, how sucky that on top of everything you are dealing with you have to remember which groups of people to contact via which media!!! Don't worry about us

I was reading your response to Taurean and I have to agree with her response to your response - Kaz, you are an amazing woman. With so much going on in your life, you are still being the best mummy ever to Mr J, you are parenting him the way that he responds best to, not whatever way suits you best - I hope that makes sense?? You are still listening to him, responding to him, being the most gentle, loving parent you possibly can. I am in awe.

And then you come in here and apologise to us for not updating? Cmon girl. I think its impressive that you find the time to even log in. You rock.

And I hear you on the 2yo molars. We're still waiting on two I think - Miss I doesn't let me near her mouth most days to check

Thanks OP I have time to be here cause I'm off work this week and I'm actually procrastinating on writing a powerpoint presentation I hate pp nearly as much as cancer!

I have been doing lots of reading about parenting approaches lately and lots of self reflection. I have found a bunch of pages in fb but also books and blogs and other stuff online. The idea of DP going away for so long scared the you know what out of me. I think single parents rock and am in awe of them but I guess I have been picking up the slack a lot of the time over the past 12 months with DS too. Because DP has been coming and going and isn't always able to get up at night etc. I want to be a conscious parent. I want to think carefully about what I'm doing with DS. I have learned a lot in the past few months and I wonder sometimes whether this parenting research is just me avoiding cancer. I don't want to know anymore about that particular topic but parenting feels fresh and new and positive and all that jazz. This is kind of how I approach everything though. You'll note that I joined BB in Jan 2008 and wasn't pg until June but we didn't try until May. I just came in here to start reading before we even wanted to get pg because I needed to. So that's how I approach stuff. DP thinks I think too much..........

Oh and btw I thought your ideas were great in that thread and I hope you don't think I was implying that you don't respond to Miss I or that you're too tough with rules etc. Cause that wasn't the case at all. I was refering to what I witnessed at sleep school back in August last year. So long ago now........
