aw sherie! these kids are growing so fast...sometimes I cannot believe how fast we go from being kids to big people...
wow trill! he is growing up so much! sounds like a great footy player too
the gastro bug has hit us here so i'm not very happy :(
particularly upset with a friend who assured me her kids were well enough for me to come to her house (after her kids had been sick previously)- silly me didn't do the maths and work out that the 'keep away' period hadn't finished yet. now both my boys have caught it. not happy at all. certainly learned my lesson though.
ooohhh gastro just sucks! i hope that it doesnt last too long
Hi Trill, to me it was bad, esp as I didn't have any with A&J. If I ate, I was sick, if i didn't eat I was sick & I couldn't move off the lounge by day. Went to the Dr & got maxolon which didn't help that much but once I started eating I was okay aslong as I kept eating - my tummy could not feel empty at all. I'm good now - I just eat decent sized meals (compared to previously when I didn't eat much at all) but still very tired at times.
Pipes still going well, some other issues that we're still sorting out though.
Had an awesome weekend down here. Did some exploring at a beach we hadn't been to before, hardly any discipline issues and Miss K entertained herself for really big blocks of time letting DH and I do things that we wanted to do. Ahh....
Trill - sounds like you have a little footballer in the works!
Ginger - oooh, gastro, you poor things
Arte - we put a ban on yogurt after dinner or late afternoon and ever since then K has slept through, instead of her once a night waking - not quite on your scale, but something to keep in mind. And please dont' worry about us, that's what we're here for.
Cally, what do you think it was in the yoghurt that was razzing her up? The sugar? BTW what's your secret to teh perfect weekend? E pretty much whined all weekend - despite the abundance of activities on offer. We had another failed attempt at taking her to the movies (Rio) - fidgeting, kicking the chair in front, etc. TBH I think she's tired because we've cut the day sleeps out most days and she needs the occasional catch up nap.
Ginger, I hope the gastro fairy moves on swiftly. Not fun
Andie, my MS was like with DD1 - basically had to graze constantly because too little or too much food was baaaaaaad. Glad you're starting to feel better with it now.
Trill, I read all about your amazing netball adventures and felt like a fat lazy couch potato  Keep telling us all about it, I need whatever motivation I can get. I've started walking at lunchtime at work, not a long walk but it must be doing me good because I'm pooped afterwards. I'm dreaming of a new bicycle, actually...
Hi girls!
Sorry have been a little mia - have had a crazy few weeks! Finished work last thursday and have this week off doing jobs...then I start next monday at my new job...weird but exciting!
It felt like I had so long with a whole week but I can see the time just getting eaten up by jobs and before I k ow it it will be over. Have to go I to city today for character check for work...and aside from that I am cleaning out purr pantry and freezer and other fun things! Have a haircut and some shopping planned for tomorrow though!
Won't ray to catch up..but will pop on a bit more this week to stay in touch.
Xxx
Perfect weekend - no naughty corner visits, not needing to be carried when we were out and about, quiet time going for 30 minutes longer than usual (we actually had to go in and retrieve her, normally she wanders out), playing very happily all weekend (had teh dancing outfit on to Dancing with the Stars - very cute) and sleeping in until 7:45 on Sunday morning!
MP - enjoy your week. Hope you're filling up the freezer as well as cleaning it up.
No idea what was in the yogurt. DH thinks it was making her gassy and that was disturbing her, then she'd be awake and figure that she'd come and see Mummy and Daddy (at 1:30am)
Thanks MD. I'm much happier now if I eat 3 solid meals. I tried to have breaky this morning so I didn't pig out at 9 (in order to have lunch) ... but it didn't work, was still stuffing my face at 9 & then lunch & then dinner.
A has his peadi app't tomorrow. fingers x'd we get some answers
Cally, we have just started giving A a bed time yoghurt because she generally only eats a bite or two for dinner and I thought she was waking hungry. Not sure if it has made any difference to the waking, but she is eating at least one before bed so she must be hungry!
Trill, no chance of sleep studies here. We are about 5 hours away from any place that would do something fancy like that - we can't even buy shoes in this town! I think he is alright anyway, sleeps though about half the time now and is generally easy to resettle when he does wake. The all nighter was just random.
MD, interesting about the food sensitivity thing. Must be hell working out what was doing it! It might well be the case but we are all moving along quite well atm so I am too lazy to bother investigating. I have heard about the additive in normal bread that people react to. No danger here, my kids don't like bread.
JM, I didn't answer about the baking soda washing powder ages ago and I was feeling guilty lol. The easiest recipe I have come across is 50/50 baking soda and Borax. But then I realised that you would probably be paying $25 for a bottle of Borax anyways lol. Or washing soda, which is sodium carbonate. I have that for DH's hunting gear because (apparently) the deer can see the optical thingy-stuff they put in the normal powders.
Just chugging along here. Went out for an entire day at Taupo, had dinner out and didn't get home until 7pm and even with late naps bedtime wasn't a disaster so that was quite liberating.
We went to the swimming pool and W has made a heap of progress. He was jumping off the side and submerging completely which is massive for him - usually he would leave the pool with dry hair lol And he was letting go and walking on the bottom. I even got him to hold my hands and float on his tummy and kick his legs.
Looks like summer has finally finished here. It has been raining and windy since friday with no end in sight. Tried to go out for a bike ride in a break in the weather today but of course as soon as we got to the far end of town it started pouring down! We ended up at a cafe eating a bowl of chips with a couple of hot chocolates. My kids are finally at the stage where we can go to a cafe and they aren't running around destroying the place!
pfft, don't feel bad. Thanks for that. Will look into it. Are you serious that deer can see particles in detergent??? :o
Crazy but true JM (apparently...). The Optical Brightening Agents (OBA's) used to make whites whiter and colours brighter do so by phosphorescence - they release a light which enhances the appearance of colours (think wearing white at a UV dance party). Because the deer can see more of the UV range than people, if you wash hunting clothes in detergents that have OBA's then the deer can see your clothes glowing blue.
Either that or husbands that can't shoot deer came up with a reason to make it the wife's fault!!
Interestingly no OBA has FDA approval, so we smother ourselves in these chemicals but no decent studies have been done to find out if they are safe for constant skin contact.
Hi girls
We have the fire captain bringing his fire truck to kinder on fri. L is so excited!
Did kinder duty today and discovered that L is in a little gang on boys that all run around together being naughty. Thought it might be a bit early for that?
Bought some great flannies for the boys from kmart for $6 if anyone is looking for cheap winter clothes!
Hiya September MegaMummies!
Ginger...I bet a few of the mummies are a bit "excited" about the firemen coming too ;). Maybe L's behaviour was silliness because mummy was there? Did you chat with the kindy teachers about it?
Arte, that deer thing makes total sense to me. Does make me wonder what it does to the soldiers' can't-see-me uniforms when they've got their night vision goggles working. That's amazing swimming.
MP, I hope you're enjoying your week 'break' - it goes quickly doesn't it. Hope your first day on Mon is great! I"m sure you will dazzle them all in no time.
Cass I can't remember if you told us whether your kitchen is all finished and gorgeous. We just got a nasssssteh electricity bill and suddenly buying a new (gas) oven and stove seems very attractive.
Arrrgggghhhh. ****. The all night waking wasn't random and it wasn't because he was sick. He did it again last night. That is the third time in two weeks. I resettled him at 11pm, then he was up at 12pm and I sat by him for an hour to get him back to sleep, then DH had a turn for half an hour until he gave up and put W in front of the telly. He ended up going to bed again at around 3.30am. WTF do I do???!! This can't keep happening. I didn't get to sleep until 4am. There just aren't facilities here for sleep studies and there is no guarantee that it would happen if someone was watching iykwim, like we can't go to Auckland and sit around for weeks waiting for it to happen for someone to observe it/him.
I mentioned phernegan to DH last night and he is totally against it, which is a lot easier for him to say when he is off sleeping in luxury hotel rooms while I am stuck here with those monsters!!
I just want to sleep
Sorry for the rant yet again, I am so freaking tired!! And sick of all this bull ****!
Arte, don't let him know if you do it. I know when my cousin was a toddler he was a dreadful sleeper at night and my Aunt took him to the Dr and he prescribed a mild sedative for him and it worked a treat. If it were happening all the time I'd say give the phenergan a try - normally I'd never recommend that but this is just getting to the point where it is ridiculous and you need as much sleep as you can. The only other alternative is put him in front of the TV as soon as he wakes and then just go back to bed. I had a bit of a google and came across a fair bit of info about how a lack of melatonin can bugger up sleep. Maybe that is something to look into?
Hey MP! Good luck for Monday! Have you found a nanny for the boys yet?
Cally that is great to hear she is sleeping better. How are things at work for you?
Yesterday we got a new dining table!! On Tuesday DH went to Wagga to see the orthopedic surgeon and had a bit of time to kill so he wandered around the shops and one was having a moving sale - they sell all that home decorating stuff and a bit of furniture and there was a solid timber 7 piece dining suite marked down to $1200 from $2200 so he rang me and we ummed and ahhhed for a bit and in the end I said OK, whatever you decide I'm happy with and not long after he texts me saying we got it for $1150! so it got delivered yesterday and I had to go in and pick it up. Its so nice BIG LOL. It's 6 foot and our last one was only about 5ft and it's a bit wider too. The one we replaced we'd brought 13 years ago for $300 second hand at a garage sale and even then it was a relic from the 70's LOL. It was at the point where I didn't even want people to come for dinner because they would see how bad the chairs were.
And DH goes in to have both knees fixed on the 3rd of June. Its going to cost a packet - PHI will cover a fair percentage but they cover bugger all of the actual surgery itself so we will be about $2500 out of pocket. But if he went public he'd be on the waiting list for well over 2 years for knee surgery so it will be worth it. Plus we can claim the money on his tax refund too.
Trill- your new table sounds lovely. so jealous! we really need some new furniture around here but it might have to wait a few years.
arte- i really just don't know what to suggest. is there any chance you can take him to the gp today and explain what is going on? i think a dr needs to take a look at him and hear your story. they may be able to suggest some strategies or point you in the right direction.
hey everyone,
I have been trying to read and keep up.
Arte have you taken him to a GP? Like Trill suggested I was going to ask about a mild sedative?
Trill the new table sounds awesome. How long will recovery take for your DH? We keep tossing up the idea of getting rid of PHI but we just can't do it.
G we got L some Kmart flannies too lol.
I can't remember much else so a big hello to everyone.
Who has night TT? This week we have stopped all nappies for L, we have had no accidents and yesterday after 3 days of holding in a poo he finally went to the toilet. Not much else happening here, Z has self weaned. I am really proud to have fed her for so long but also a little sad, I was only a few months shy of my 2 year goal.
Arte, this might sound simplistic, but have you tried bribery/reward charts? By this age they are able to make a decision about what they do when they wake up. We did this a few months ago with Missy E, explained that if she wakes up and it's still dark, she can shut her eyes and cuddle her bunny and think about something nice and go back to sleep again. We didn't need the next step - reward chart/bribery - but by this age that could be effective too. Pick something he really wants and reward reward reward for each night he doesn't get up/call out/cry/whatever. Also ask him (in the daytime) what's happening physically when he wakes up. Is he hot? cold? thirsty? itchy? need to pee? Is he comfy in bed? Does something hurt? What can he hear? Trill may be onto something with the melatonin too. Do you keep the whole house really dark at night? It's the switch between daylight to total darkness that flicks the melatonin switch, so getting outside/under bright lights in the afternoon is important, followed by lowered lights before bedtime then total darkness (I've started using an eye mask again to sort out my sleep issues, I can't believe what a difference it makes to the quality of my sleep). You can get kids eye masks so that might be something you could try, like a novelty sleep-helper. If he has a nightlight, you could try giving him a torch to keep next to his pillow, or switch the nightlight off once he's asleep.
Oz that is a sterling effort on Bfing Z  A has been night trained for ages which is awesome. But a PITA now it's cold and he walks right past the toilet in the middle of the night to come and get me out of bed to help him LOL. It is only day surgery and he will be able to walk out of the hospital. The op has come a long way from the days when you were left with a 5 inch scar on your knee and on crutches for weeks. His Dr told him he could go back to work the next day if he wanted to, but he has 30 sick days accumulated so he is taking a week off work just so he has more time at home without using his holidays to get some stuff done around the house.
G, we've been wanting a new table for years but just never had the money. We don't really have the money now either LOL but it was too good a deal to pass up.
hi girls!
well, now that the full moon is passing overhead i feel better again lol! still no AF though, so i guess the PMS monster will have to wait another day lol.
Trill: WTG on the table purchase. that is a HUGE saving. but have to laugh as a table that big just wouldnt fit in our house hahahahaha! urgh, victorian terraces are small lol).
also, it's interesting about the knee op. DH really really needs to get his knee done again (he had a recon done almost 20 years ago and has the big scar et al).
MD: nah the kitchen isn't done yet. we have a working sink and stove etc, but are waiting on the benchtops and splashbacks. we are getting brushed stainless steel and it is a PITA to get it fitted to a "quirky" old house lol.
Oz: oh wow, you did so well with the BF! Leila weaned herself so much earlier than i thought (15 months). it was really weird....but then i got to rip out all my nice bras again lol.
G: oh man, nah, totally normal for L to run around doing kid stuff like that. well, at least i hope so as Leila is doing it too lol.
AFM: all ok here. Marta had her 6 month vax (yeah, a bit behind lol). but she didnt cope too well with it. and for the last few days has had ongoing temps. she is really out of sorts and we are not allowed to touch her leg :(
Leila is all good. she had a pretty bad skin breakout the other week but turns out that she was given some watermelon at kindy (by her friend and watermelon pusher lol). i was amazed at how it affected her, from her skin, to her behaviour. so freaky.
we have been slack as in organising our family holiday. we are desperate for one, but the irony is that we are too tired to organise one. i just wish someone could come to my house with a planned holiday organised and could tell me when and where i need to be lol.
oz- well done on the bfing!!! J self weaned at 20 months so i was short of my 2 year goal too, but i have to admit i was ready for him to stop by then anyway.
i feel so behind now on the TT front. L still will not poo on the toilet and i really feel that enough is enough. how do you night TT them? do you just stop putting nappies on them or do you work up to it? what should i do?
We are not night trained here either G. Lu sleeps so heavily that she just doesn't wake up to pee. I tried just going cold turkey and had wet sheets every day bar one for a week so figured she wasn't ready. I tried the taking her to the toilet at 10-11 pm thing to no avail, in fact it just made her start waking in the night. Fail. So i'm just leaving it for a bit. My cousins' DD night trained close to 4, but was day trained at 18 months. I dunno. Maybe it will be easier when it's warm? :dunno: I kind of feel like we missed the boat a bit. I think L is so used to the security of the nappy that she doesn't wake up. This time, i am going to try and night train S earlier. I kind of feel like i have created a problem by not encouraging it earlier, but i dunno. S doesn't wear a nappy at all for her day naps, just at night. And we haven't had an accident yet.
Oz- Good work on the BF'ing. :) Is she eating toothpaste instead? :p
Cass- That's no good about about Marta. Hope she picks up soon.
Score on the Table Trill. I laughed at your car packing. Was poor A left on the roof?!
Lu is loving kinder. She is really loving playing with other kids, i am so glad we put her in, it's been the best thing (for her and i! ). I am amazed how much learn, especially from other kids. She is interacting with her sister much better as a result. Don't get me wrong, they still fight, but they are playing much better than before.
Totally agree on preschool being good for them JM. I've noticed that since he's been going that he seems so much more like a 4yo than a 3yo kwim? He's grown up a lot. As for car tetris, all I can say is thank god for a 60-40 split fold seat LOL. I put him on the single seat and folded the double one down.
Don't worry too much about the night training. Some kids aren't night trained for ages. I've been incredibly lucky that all of mine night trained really easily and none of them were bed wetters.
No night training here. I suspect that it just gets wet in the mornings as she wakes up, but not sure. She has always seen the nappy as a bit of a security thing and when she was first toilet trained we used to have some massive tantrums when I tried to take the night time off. I'm not willing to deal with the wet sheets a) at this time of the year and b) when 5 out of 7 mornings we are getting off to work. So we might not worry until summer time. We've got enough nappies in the wardrobe to last us until then anyway!!
Cass - hope Marta picks up soon. Poor little thing, lucky you put it off until now.
When we ask K why she wakes in the middle of the night the usual answer is she's lonely. And apparently stuffed animals/dolls do not cut it.
We're doing the bribe in the morning for a dry nappy, it works most of the time and we could probably go without the pullups, but it's just as easy to have them on as not. When they're dry they'll be dry. At nighttime I think it really is about physiological maturity and not behaviour so much, kwim?
Trill your new dining table sounds lovely! We've got an old op-shop job one as well, it's daggy but I love it because it has character. One of these days I'm going to give it a good working over with a furniture restoration product.
Ginger we nearly went mad getting E to poo on the toilet, it's really only a very recent thing. I can't even remember what it was that got us around that corner. Maybe try a sticker chart with a really desirable reward after 5 x successes. It really only took doing it 2 or 3 times and E realised it wasn't all that bad.
hmm we never really had poo issues on the toilet. but i *think* that might have to do with Ls penchant for fart jokes. DH is proud.
Cally: thanks babe  Marta seems much more herself now, finally! she is still a bit clingy and crabby, but her wheezing and snot monsterness is well under control :)
MD: oh and forgot to say that the hugg thingo i won is actually called "hugg-a-planet"...yep, i am good with names
Cool, that makes more sense in the google checkometer! Very cool, totally love the little moon accessory, did you go back and get that?
haha no MD i totally embarrassed myself as the earth gives birth to the moon (it's tucked inside!)
ok, jut read through some of your blog...., sorry that it has been ages since i went in there. i font know something in the last three months has just been chaotic. cant quite put my finger on it, but i *think* it has to do with getting used to a new life without Oma in it IYKWIM but i am still out balance time/concentration wise....excuses i know, as Oprah would say 'time is now'...i think i need to really focus on her definition of forgiveness to move onto this new phase.
Oh, so it was in the box, but nestled inside mother earth's womb?
yep...did i mention that the full moon and i apparently DONT mix...the fact that it then decided to play that little trick of hide seek was not lost on me
Cass just read your ETA - soooo relate my darling, esp re the time/balance/focus thing. Something pretty major has happened in your emotional landscape, I don't think that's something that you can just snap back to normal from straightaway. Be kind to yourself. I'm slowly coming to realise that we (I) don't have to be everywhere and do everything. I really don't. I'm not talking about when you're going through a tough patch (like just after your baby's born or when you're having cancer treatment or when you're grieving for someone) but all the time!!! We have so many culturally-derived expectations about what 'successful' looks like, what we need to do and enjoy and even to know about in order to be 'across' everything that we deem to be necessary to be happy. That's not what it's all about, it's just another source of pressure to put on ourselves. What we really need to do is slow down and be connected to whatever it is that's significant in that moment. kwim?
oh man, that is exactly how i have been feeling of late MD! just a big eye opener for me of what and how life can be lived IYKWIM. DH is finding it really confronting though (he is so 'success' and 'output' driven that taking time to smell the roses is just too scary for him...but that's a whole other saga lol).
LayDeeeees!!? Where is everyone? Is it Marydean Monday or something? :p
Arte, how are things going at your place?
I'm flat stick putting the finishing touches on my last two assignments for the semester but I'm here
Well done Trill. I'm struggling big time on the study front and have had to do some motivational self-talk.
Don't worry, today has been a struggle. I got that 2500 word case study back today with barely a pass mark. It was for that PE subject I complained about a while back. The comment I got was really insulting as well.
OUCH. Not nice. Although it probably helps to understand it was probably marked by a postgrad student and not a lecturer. My metadata assignment came back with a pass too. I've never before scored lower than a credit so this is all new (and highly fraught) territory for this ex-smartypants.
Nope, not a post grad student - it was definitely the lecturer himself. I can't wait to get the subject surveys we get at the end of the semester so I can tell them exactly what I think of him. I wouldn't be surprised if there were students who failed this time as well.
