I guess every baby is different. I think I'm going to start a night time routine... although it's hard if I'm out during the day as Lachlan tends to like either the car seat or my front carrier to fall asleep in. I try to keep him awake and alert but once he's out there is no getting him back to the land of the living and he sleeps (like an angel) for a couple of hours. This morning he's being a ratbag... falling asleep in either daddy or my arms, we put him down, then he wakes himself up again and the process continues all over again. he's been awake since 7am and it's now 10:30... I know he's tired cos he keeps yawning and falling asleep really quick when we hold him and rock him, but put him down and he wakes himself up - especially if his arms get free and their moving about all over the place, but he's just such a strong little guy that the swaddles just don't hold him anymore! So we're doing alternate cuddles so the other person can at least have a shower and do some stuff around the house like laundry and washing.
BadMummy - perhaps it's a growth spurt your LO is having at the moment? And yeah, I agree with Lexie - express some milk and get a stock up in the freezer so when you're really exhausted DH can take the night time feeding shift... a good nights sleep will do you wonders. Then also talk to your paediatrician, it may be something that you need to get checked out? Also, I read that babys have Sunny weeks and Wonder weeks - 5-6 weeks is a wonder week and I can tell that Lachlan is a little fussier than usual - likes to be held more, feeding more etc.. it usually goes away in a few days. Google Wonder weeks to get more info. But keep with the BF if you can, it's so beneficial for your LO and for you :)
Poopie - there is actually a trolley cover that you can buy at Toy's r Us ... I nearly bought one on Friday. They fit over the trolley seat at the front. But what I do is carry Lachlan in the front baby bjorn infant carrier. Then I've got my hands free to get stuff off the shelves. He always falls asleep in it and if he doesn't he's very content to sit there and look around at everything.
Dansta - your hair is Hot :) Congrats to your cousin for their new arrivals... but they're so tiny! Hope they do OK and come home soon :)
alexandra - 8-2am is pretty good! I can't wait until Lachlan does that type of sleeping. I thought we were going that way earlier this week, but it was a case of 2 steps forward 1 step back when he had a busy night last night, waking up every 3 hours... but hey, I'll take what I can get.
So I have a question regarding baby spit-up and vomiting. I'm BF and if I don't feed for a while my boobies get quite full and I know that my poor child will get a face full of milk (so I try and express - once I got 120mL from one boob before he started feeding!!!). Anyhoo, Lachlan will feed for around 10-15 mins and then I'll get him to burp. Sometimes he does a couple of burps with a bit of spit up (nothing major) and other times there will be proper vomit (where it smells like vomit and looks curdled and half digested) as well. When he does vomit it's pretty much everything he has just injested so I'm not sure if I need to feed him again?? It's at least 2 tablespoons worth of fluid that comes up.. and the look on his face afterwards... poor little guy. I'll speak to the HCN about it, and I've raised the bed so that it's on an angle, and will be burping him more regularly but is this normal?? I have no idea! he looks like he's putting on weight and he's definitely growing. he's not grizzly and doesn't cry all that much (just when he gets over tired)...

Erica - I was just about to ask the SAME thing! Harlee just did the most biggest spew i've ever seen and she had just fed ( so it was more all over me and my boob than it was on her) then she got cranky and I wasnt sure if she was tired or hungry again.. so after half an hour I fed her again and she seemed happy about it. But not sureif it will all stay down? My dad says that when they spit up, you dont need to refeed because they have got all the nutrients out of the milk so they are fine. but when its more vomit than what she weighs.. well i guess its silly not to refeed then?

They say not to top up spewy reflux babies, but I don't know if it's the same for other babies. If your bub is demand fed I'd feed again if they want it and not if they're happy. Seems like a likely answer?

erica & poopie: feed 'em again. can't hurt. vic has had a few power chucks. namely after if some one asks "is he feeding well" BANG power chuck. just prooving a point i guess :rofl: as for getting all they need poopie. ahem NO. it takes more then 10mins to get the boobie milk goodness. the other thing is your milk supply could be increseing there for their bellys need to catch up.
BM- pfft. sorry but a reflux baby if they throw it up they will need to be fed again sooner. trust me - i had a reflux baby/toddler in DJ. and the best way of dealing with it is smaller more often feeds. puts less stress on their tummy.
AFM: vics been unsettled but thats possably due to the nuts of dough i ate yesterday :redface: and it may keep happening too...i made myself a cougar and cola tonight. with like 15-20ml of cougar in it :rofl: ...the glass would be 250ml LOL. but we'll see. its been cold and wet here. ooo better go. i have two hungry boys!

We had a big projectile chuck on one of our first substantial trips out (to playgroup). It got on everything ... me, the painting table, the floor, the baby ... I had to take him home and get us both changed. So much for going out. At least there's no shortage of cleaning up stuff at a kindergarten, but still ...
And you know what? He was rooting around for boobies and looking ravenous as soon as we got home!
He's been a ravenous beast all day today (and most days since he got better), I was going to make chocolate tartlets but I spent so much time feeding it didn't happen :(

Dansta - Erin had reflux too (it contributed to her refusing to eat and needing to be tube fed), we were told that if she vomited not to feed her again. I can't remember the reason though, not that it made mch difference, we were lucky if she was interested in the feed to begin with so we didn't push her.
RE - yikes on the spew! They make you feel so glamorous.
Things haven't been great here. Today was the first day in four that Abi hasn't wailed like she was being murdered the moment I put her down. I've started block feeding her hoping that it'll make some difference to her wind pain and how unsettled she's been. I'm probably speaking too soon and tomorrow will be same ole, same ole but today she hasn't had anywhere near the same amount of wind, her poos are yellow (they've always been green), she doesn't want to feed all day and she had a 3 hour sleep in her swing this morning! God I hope it lasts.

erica, poopie: my LO also will spit up, which is fine nothing major but she does 'vomit' as well and it smells like vomit, it is only milk that has been sitting there longer so looks curdled, if your LO is not upset by bringing this up 'happy chucker' then there really is no need to worry or do anything (thats what i was told by mide wife), no need to top up either. Apparently it looks like a lot more comes out than we think and two table spoons is not a lot compared to what they are getting. If your LO has reflux you would know, Chloe def doesnt have reflux but does bring milk up and sometimes while sleeping she may bring some up but she never cries about it so it obviously doesnt bother her, but i have tilted the mattress for her so she is more comfortable.
Badmummy: i have read somewhere that green poo may mean that the baby is only getting the foremilk and not reaching the hindmilk. How long does she feed on each side? i was trying to regulate my breasts (right side was twice the size of left and always painful so tried to get them equal) and i was feeding short spurts on each side, her poos turned green then i changed back to letting her completely finish one side, usually after that she doesnt want the second side but her poos turned yellow after that.
AFM: going to have her 6 week check up today hope she has been putting on enough weight, i think she has she certainly looks like she is getting bigger!

BM: fair enough. they told me that too - we spent 4 days in hospital with failure to thrive with DJ - and i cracked it and had a tanty any toddler would have been proud of over it. and DJ went from 10% to the 25th in three weeks once i threw out the window what they told me. and he only stopped vomiting 2/3's of his food at around 14-15 months. and now at just under 18 months we have a vomit once every few days but *nothing* compared to what it was. but each and every baby is differant.
and happy chuckers are fun. DJ had relfux but was a happy chucker! our carpets wheren't so happy though. they still look like crud :rofl: but hey, i dont mind one less thing for me to keep clean!
AFM: went shopping today and bought some more b/f tops. i only had two b.f singlets now i have four all up. plus about 6 mat bra's but out and about its easier to use the singlets. vic was feeding like mad yesterday. but he's eased off a little today. which is good. he's been sleeping fairly well as has DJ which has been a plus. Ohh and vic's hair is thinning out too! DJ's hair also did the same but he never lost *all* of it though. mind you vic has a mullet already! but his hair looks like it'll be strait- Dj's wavy/curly hair is hard to cut so it looks good lol i better go and attack the washing i have to do!

Lol Dansta, Erin was hospitalized for FTT too. I also had to through a tanty to get discharged when she wasn't gaining 200g a day.
Been meaning to ask, what's AFM?
Things are much the same here. Am trying to convince myself to make a doctors apt about going on anti d's again.

200g a day?!? they wanted a consistant weight gain from DJ. i chucked a tanty when they refused to feed him every 3.5hrs. it was every 4. and over night i delt with a baby screaming and they told me he was "fighting change" and they tried to pat DJ off to sleep and i kindly (mmk maybe not kindly) told the nurse who was doing it my son was NOT a pet and he would be cuddled as soon as her back was turned LOL. a mum at my MG had a NG fed baby - due to bottle/breast refusal. he had reflux but i feel it was due to over feeding him - as he grew the reflux got better but then they'd up the feed quantity and he'd be throwing up badly again...bit of a tangent but another mum at my mothers group was trying to get her son (at under 2 months at that point) to take 250ml a feed 0_o to make him "sleep better" yep. sure didn't work another "reflux" baby there. how is Erin going now? is she fussy with her food? DJ is getting better now but still wont have anything too acidic.

With the spew thing . . unless it's regular (indicating the reflux babies), it's probably just a burp coming up too fast and bringing the milk on top of it up with it or bub having eaten a bit too much too fast but too much comes up with the extra KWIM, so if that is the case bub will be hungry and rooting around for more perhaps even quite soon after wards and may well need to be fed again. Well . . I suppose on the plus side of having a crap supply is my bubs hardly EVER throw ANYTHING up, Lilah sometimes spits up a tiny little bit of curdle in the corners of her mouth, and after her formula bottle usually brings maybe 10mls back up but thats it.
BM - That sounds t-o-u-g-h :hug: if BF is getting too much and it doesn't seem like just a phase, try doing a bottle of formula in the evening before bed to firstly see if it makes any difference (it would be a shame to give up if it didn't make a difference KWIM) and to give you a bit of a break, even if it's only for one day. I know a lot of people/advocates would throw eggs (or worse) at me for saying this but even if it wasn't necessary as it has been in my case, I would always recommend trying mixed feeding, or a little comping before giving completely up on breastfeeding. And in the end, whatever is going to be the most beneficial physically and emotionally to the both of you is a good decision whichever way you decide to go. But it sounds like it was maybe just a too much foremilk issue so hopefully your blockfeedings has resolved it and things will be better from there.
Erica - DAMN!!! 120 iin one boob!!!! Man, if it were ancient times you would make a great wet nurse.

dan- so jealous of ur b/f tops, i cant find any that are cheap enough to justify cos no one like big w or kmart stock anything small enough! no maternity stuff smaller than a 12 and im a size 8 so i just look ridiculas!!
elf - eeeeeew!! that sounds fun...NOT! oh well at least it was playgroup so the other mummies would understand! thank god we dont have too much spit up here.
BM- :hug: i can sympathise with the clinginess. we have actually bought a tomy carrier and 2 slings (1 DF sized, ie GIANT) cos mr c doesnt think he should be left in a room by himself or put down anywhere except the swing sometimes :wall: but hopefully its something they grow out of? dont laugh but wats block feeding?
:hello: to anyone i missed, hoping the little squirmers are treating you ok
sleep hasnt been too bad here, only real disturbance has been a bit of co-sleeping when mr c has been feeling sick and/or itchy and not wanting to sleep in the bassinet but other than that we've been averaging 2 4-6 hour blocks at night and 2-3hrs twice during the day.
we had our 6week check up today. hes only put on 350g above his birth weight but hes grown 3.5cms the doc says his lack of weight gain isnt too serious, since hes been sick, with the reaction to (we think) tomatoes then a sore throat so has prob been spending his calories on that rather than storing it. just means we have to monitor him to make him sure he keeps putting on weight. hes still got a chicken neck and long scrawny arms and legs lol so we are in 000 suits for length but i could fit another baby in width wise :lol: his nappies have gaping legs cos i was counting on him being a chubba like his daddy was so we are having to comp the newborn nappies with sposies until he grows into the smalls :rolleyes:
hes also had his first visit to the chiro cos he had something out of place from my back/hips being wonky and sitting in my tummy wonky (looked like he had his head on crooked). he would only turn his head to his left. turns out he had 2 spots in his neck out and his right hip.
ive got a really interesting book written by the allergy unit at the prince alfred in conjunction with sydney uni nutrition unit about foods and allergies and intolerances cos food allergies and intolerances run in our family, it has some really good recipes in there that im going to have to try out. we are also booked in to see the natropath on 16th aug :crossfingers: she can help us out cos my eczema and intolerances have flared heaps worse since mr c was born i swear we've been sharing rashes, headaches and tummy aches!!

We've only had two megapukes (usually just get a tiny bit of dribble) so just typical that one was when we were out :rolleyes:
My lump had put on 600g over his birthweight at his 3 week checkup and he's obviously put on even more since then. The chicken neck is now 3 chins, but he doesn't have rubber band wrists and ankles yet. He's very cute. He fits Bonds 000 onesies (which are SO not 000) like a glove and I can barely get the snaps done up, so he really should be in generic 0000 onesies which are bigger. Unfortunately this means I've miscalculated and I only have one 000 onesie in the house when I thought I had at least four, silly me. I have oodles of true 000 legless onesies from DD#2 but it is cold so they are no use, and heaps of 00 onesies ... *sigh* ...
Someone really needs to open a baby store in this town. Its a 66km drive to the nearest Target, which isn't *that* far (3/4 hour) but not something you can just pop out and do on a whim. One of the shops sells a small range of really fancy upmarket stuff but ... OMG ... expensive.
If anyone has a lump that outgrows any neutral or boy's 000 stuff, since you guys are a little ahead of me, PM me - happy to take it off your hands for whatever you're willing to sell it for + postage. ETA: if you're worried you can even look up my fantastic rating on eBay and see I'm a good payer lol. I get a lot of stuff off eBay because I'm rural, and when I sell stuff on eBay I always seem to be posting it off to other rural people :)

elf where abouts r u in SA? unfortunately it seems ur bub is bigger than mine despite mr c having a jump on ur bub so we are only just out of the target 0000 stuff (length only, they are SOO baggy lol!!). ebay is my hero, so many cheap baby things!!! big w has a baby sale on atm, some $5 onesies, i wonder if they if they deliver for a reasonable price?

The other half goes to Adelaide (and Pt Pirie) once a fortnight so I can send him out for things - there is no BigW in Pirie but he passes one in Elizabeth. You have to be careful with second hand stuff for this reason actually, the new stuff is so cheap these days that it is easy to pay more on eBay for something (especially with postage) than it is to get it new. If we're desperate the supermarket has basics for about $15 a pop.
We got most of our stuff so far at Best&Less, Kmart and Target just because there's no BigW nearby :)
When does the BigW sale end? Next Adelaide trip is next Wednesday (11th).
Edit: you can buy stuff off the BigW site and the postage is reasonable BUT they won't let you add a single item to your cart. So if I want 1 2pack of wondersuits, too bad, it wants me to buy THREE 2packs and complains about minimum orders. Sif need 6 wondersuits, 3 is plenty.

Erica: i am also getting just over 120ml from my right breast but my left will only get 80ml so i am lopsided at the moment, but its slowly getting better.
All: How long should i keep LO up during the day? at the moment during the day she will eat (takes maybe 15 - 20min), nappy change (5min) then a little play time (15min) so she is only actively up for maybe 40min sometimes longer. Is this long enough? the MW said she should be up for 1.5 hrs at a time? She does have times where she will be awake for over an hr before sleeping again and other times where she pretty much doesnt sleep between feeds.
AFM: i had my 6 week check yesterday and LO is now 4.55kg which is just over 1kg since birth so she is doing well. In the last five days she gained 260gm so am pretty happy with her weight gain.
We found out she has an issue with her aortic valve - (they found a heart murmur just after she was born), the valve didnt develop correctly while i was pregnant so we have been stressed about that, it is likely she will need to have a procedure to try to help the blood flow easier to her body. I am pretty stressed about that i can not imagine such a little baby having to go under to have this type of procedure done. it breaks my heart to think about it, and this is something she will have to monitor her whole life i just hope she is able to do regular things any kid can do or adult with out having to worry if it will be to much stress on her heart. We go back to heart specialist end of the month to see if we have to go ahead with the procedure. :crossfingers: she doesnt have too many issues. I cant help but feel responsible, and cant help but think of what her life will be like.

alex: :hug: im sure it'll be ok sweets. its a scary time when medical issues are hanging over head. if Chloe needs to have an Op to fix her heart it'll be for the best. i know a good friend of DH's has a hole in his heart and he's fine (heck he's fathered two kids!) you'll be in my thoughts :hug: as for the wake time. each baby is differant i know vic has two feeds in a row (could be day or night) where he'll wake - feed -nappy change-sleep. im hoping it'll be tonight 'cus last night he was up every two hours!DJ on the other hand was up evert 3.5hrs and was only awake for maybe 30mins after his bottle.
AFM: had a 'bad' night last night mainly due to being up every 2hours for a feed. but co-sleeping i was only up for 15mins at a time. i timed it. vic takes 8mins each side! unless its his longer sleep time - then its a little longer - maybe 10 mins each side. BBL i have a a toddler cracking it
