Babies born~March 1st-15th 2010 #1

Robert has put on 665g since we left hospital (or 462g on his birth weight). He weighs 3590g now. Apparently a gain of 150g a week is good so she said whatever I'm doing to keep doing it because he's obviously getting enough at each feed. She also said that breast fed bubs will feed 2 - 3 hourly because breast milk is more easily digested than formula but by about 6 weeks he will probably be on 3 - 4 hourly feeds. She also commented on how alert he was.

Breesa, I agree with you 100% in saying it's nice to know they are doing well and we are doing well feeding them. Our little boys must be boob men!! It's certainly reassuring.

I'm going cloth nappies too, although I had fallen behind in the washing department so we had a disposable relapse today but we are back on track now.

WOW way to go we have gained, 380 grams so far, i also was told 160 170 week is good amount:) we are 5 days old corrected now:) weigh 2550 on tuesday weigh in so we iwll see how we go still very much acwing prem here.

Gosh Squid, Chakotay must be tiny. I know how small Robert is to me. His little hand was wrapped around my thumb when he was having a feed - everything is so tiny but just perfect! My cousin had a very tiny baby (he was 6wks prem) and he's now a strapping lad of 16, it was his birthday today actually. How often do you have to get Chakotay weighed? Do they go on his corrected age? Sorry too many questions :redface: is that a bit insensitive of me?

hey sweet i just want to firstly say this because i want EVERYONE else to read this tooo.....

In no way shape or form is it insensitive to ask questions regarding my beautiful boy:D. If anyone at all feels like they need to restrain from askings things or even sharing their joys please please PLEASE do not restrain your self i honestly dont mind questions:) small he is but perfect too. And like yourselves, i would be delighted to share this journey with you all. You have all been my strength through a tough pregnancy and i am sure u will be here through the mile stones we all reach with our wonderful children.:loveshower:

yes he is tiny i am constantly amazed at ppls reactions to him its hard to imagine how large my other children were in comparison to him 3410 up to 3.7 kilo off the top of my head.. ppl always say he is extra small i would LOVE the opportunity to have him next to another child his own age just to see the difference.:)

how often do you have to get Chakotay weighed? every 2 days till he reaches 3.5 kilo abouts to check he is not loosing weight. We own digital baby scales at home so this makes life easier indeed. Not having to go out anywhere iykwim.

Do they go on his corrective age? yes they do for weight and growth and milestones till 3 years old. They also have to take into account that he was IUGR babie.( was not growing well in womb)

Squidi, I'm very emotional at the moment - the first week without DH absolutely sucks - so anything even remotely heartwarming brings me to tears (yes, your post did that to me). He is just so precious your little man and what a fighter he is too. It must be all the loving he's getting from his mum (not to mention all the good vibes his belly belly aunties are sending him). What are your other kids like with him?

A friend popped round today with her 3 kids. Her "baby" girl just turned one. I picked her up and LOL I couldn't get over how heavy she was. It's funny, just over a month ago I thought she was little - go figure?!

Well, I'm making Orange Weetbix Squares for morning tea - I made some zucchini slice yesterday - so I better get back to it while bubs is asleep. I've decided to bake snacks rather than buy them. Thank goodness I learnt how to live on a budget from my mum!

Hi Everyone, congratulations on the arrival of all your beautiful bubs.
My son Lennox, was born on the 12th of March and he was 2 weeks early! I am happy to say, I amazed myself by having a vbac and would do it again in a heartbeat!
I also have a 2 year old lil boy who is just amazing with his new little brother. I am finding it a bit hard though to share my time around and if anyone has any advice I would love to hear it!

I also Love the names of all the new bubs!!

Hi ladies how are we all?? Feeling like a dairy cow who hasnt slept?? Or is that just me?

Miss Peppar and I have been in hospital.
She had a high temp on Saturday so off to the GP we went. It was 38.3!:o It did come down a wee bit while we were there and the "silly" (not the word I really want to use but will keep it PG rated) told us she was fine and to give her panadol!
Not happy with that DH and I took her to emergency. They seemed a bit more concerned and ushered us off to a isolation room and started freaking me out.
Talking menigitis, brain infections, urine infections, lung problems (she has meconium stained waters when born) As you can imagine I was an hysterical mess.
She had to have bloods taken straight away, she wouldnt wee so they had to put a needle into her bladder for a sample, have drip inserted, a chest xray and then not one but two Lumber punctures!!! I bawled and bawled and I didnt even go into the room with her DH did.
We were admitted and she was started on three different lots of antibiotics to kill anything that may have been growing before we got the results of all the tests.
Hopsitals are so not the place for rest and relaxtion are they? Her drip was going off every hour and her obs were taken every hour too. She was a real trooper though and coped with it all beautifully. Mum didnt and had many breakdowns both scared and hormonal ones.
She did have a few more temps while we were there but all the tests came back clear and negative so four sleepless days later it was ruled a viral infection and we were allowed home.
Im very happy to be back in my own bed and so is Peppar. She has unfortunately lost the weight she had put on but is feeding well so im sure she will be back up soon.
She is very relaxed and cruisy and so far eats poos and sleeps like a dream.
Dont wanna brag but (im gonna :dance:) she feed at 7pm last night then woke at 2am then again at 7am! I wake her every three hours during the day but let her go at night and it seems to be working.
Well I have rattled on enough and I have also finished a whole packet of milk bottle lollies :shakehead: love the kiwi lollies!
Hope your nipples arent giving you too much grief, I am really loving riteaids gel discs for mine. Very cooling and soothing. So give them a go

Hello "mostly" All-boys, you poor thing. How horrible for you and Peppar. That would have been so scarey for you and your DH. Typical bubs though to just go with it. They are such little fighters aren't they?! I'm glad to hear that you are both back home. I'm sure she will put on the weight in no time.

Oh and yes!! Definately a dairy cow - just put me out in the paddock and milk me every now and then. DH (affectionately) calls me the Milk Lunch Truck.

I can't believe it has been a week already since the lil guy entered the world. Time just goes too quickly.

All-Boys it sounds like you have had a bit of a bad time. You must have been so strong when they were doing all those tests. It just doesn't seem right to be poking and prodding such tiny little bodies. I hope that your resting and relaxing nicely at home now.

Cass I can't believe how organised you are to be making all that yummy food. I find it hard to get myself Weet Bix for brekky.

I am finding breast feeding this time around so much easier. I think it's because I have a bit more confidence, though it is still a bit hard to get him attached properly. I love being a dairy cow though!
We are off to the doctor today for his 1 week check up. Lennox has been doing green poo's so we are a bit worried but I think it is just that he is getting too much of the first milk.
I am still feeling quite sore still. Did anyone else have any tearing?

All-Boys that is horrendous... I would have been hysterical too with bubs going thru all those tests, injections etc. Glad to hear Peppar is on the mend and back at home.

We also had a long feed night last night - 4-5hrs in some stints.... i was a bit worried truth be told, as yesterday AM got some major tenderness in both breasts under the nipple which appears to be blocked ducts (some redness) so spent the day/night massaging them like mad. Anyway they are no better or worse today :( but i was worried Ciaran taking so long between feeds last night may not help move the blockage.

Any tips on clearing a blockage in the duct? Have been massaging in shower, after feeds and also putting hot facewashers on them during the day.

Also the little man has some nasty nappy rash (prompting me to go to cloth nappies after just a week), but we went to the GP yesterday at my midwifes insistence to be sure it wasnt a staph infection. He has put Ciaran on a topical nappy cream to try for 2 days, and if that doesnt help will need some antibiotics (not really a fan of them), so hopefully this will help.

all boys our journey's are different but that feeling that i and u share thats the same " i just want to make it better and take all discomfort away" i hear ya sweet. Your right hospitals are not nice places. I am delighted they ruled out anything major. It sounds like they were very concerned.:hug:

as for nappy rash "BAMBOO" for our 19 month old we use fitted bamboo napies happy to share thoughts with ya on types of nappies that work for us. Thereis so many on market and can be daunting.

What is so cool about bamboo?

Bamboo grows very, very quickly. Up to one foot a day! It does not require pesticides or chemical fertilizers, making it much more environmentally friendly than conventionally grown crops such as cotton. Because it grows so quickly, bamboo is a sustainable resource. Bamboo also helps prevent soil erosion and can absorb up to 40 percent more carbon dioxide than a similar growth of trees.

Bamboo is naturally antibacterial. Studies in Japan show that even after 50 washes, bamboo fabric retains it's antibacterial properties. When scientists attempted to grow bacteria on bamboo fabric, they found that 70 percent of the bacteria did not grow.

Bamboo is highly absorbent - about 60 percent more than cotton. Bamboo is able to absorb about 3 times it's own weight in water.

Bamboo is very breathable, making it a good choice for use against sensitive skin.

Get yourelf a nice big cabbage. Stuff a cold cabbage leaf in your bra. It works. Don't use the bit of the leaf down near the core, but the top smoother part. Also don't leave it on indefinately, it can dry the milk up. I used to just stuff the cool leaves in and toss them when they got warm. Yes you will smell divine! I copied this from the net....

Cabbage Leaves
It is not an old wives’ tale. Cabbage leaves really do relieve engorgement, possibly more effectively than icepacks or other treatments. Regular green cabbage such as you’ll find at the grocer contains sinigrin, magnesium, oxylate, mustard oil, rapine and sulphur heterosides. This natural mixture of compounds reduces tissue congestion by dilating the small blood vessels to improve blood flow to the area.

To use, crush the green cabbage leaves with a rolling pin to break the veins and to better accommodate the shape of your breast. You can snip out a hole for your nipple if that is more comfortable for you.

Place the cabbage leaves over your breasts, inside of your bra. Leave it in place until they wilt, usually 2-4 hours. Many mothers report relief about 8 hours after treating with cabbage leaves. You can stop using the cabbage as soon as the engorgement goes down.

IMPORTANT: Cabbage leaves are not recommended if you are allergic to cabbage or sulfa.
