Babies Born~September 2007 #51

I'm not expert Arte, but Lu's were almost runny diarrhea type poo at least 5 out of 7 days a week. Sometimes not as bad, but never looked like a log iykwim! I was told it should be soft, kind of like a putty or playdough consistency. Lu's was also gritty, like it had sand in it, only she wasn't eating sand!
When i say roll off the nappy, it does look kinda squished in there, but with a bit of encouragement it will peel off leaving bits of residue, but certainly not like before where i had to scrape it off with a spoon....... too much info???

:rofl: Ange! Yep, that's exactly what Alisters are like but without the grainy-ness so something is definitely going on. And soy is a bugger because the bloody stuff is in EVERYTHING!! Did she put on weight too when you cut out all of that? But he did have the tiniest nugget today that was hard, but then I think that was due to him getting dehydrated a bit yesterday :rolleyes: can't wint either way but at least when I told DH last night he seems like he believes me now because when I said something in the past about it he just had that 'he'll be right' attitude.

How did you get her to sit still while she was having blood taken though? That would be my biggest worry of all this - the barrage of blood tests.

Oh Kate :hug: I'm so sorry that he is screwing you around like he is - that's not good for the head at all. I hope that you can work it out - I hate the thought of you having to go through all this. But you can keep your tounge piercing all to yourself LOL - no one is ever sticking anything in my tounge!

Kate - I'm so sorry that things aren't going well, but it's a step in the right direction that he has organised the counselling. I hope your weekend gets better.:hug:

Trill- The blood test was pretty horrible. But as terrible as it sounds i am pretty good at holding kids for needles. In my previous life i often had to hold a little tacker while they had a needle, or have someone hold them while i put a needle in. So i am familiar with the situation. They use a butterfly, so it's a pretty small needle. I held her on my knee and held her arm. She didn't like it at all, more the fact that i was holding her tight rather than the needle i think. They asked if i was happy holding her though, if i wasn't another nurse would have. I had a chocolate frog ready for when we finished. As soon as she tasted it, she was as happy as larry! ;) They should only have to do one needle for all the blood work. The needle isn't that bad, more the thought of it and the fact you need to hold them tight to keep them very still. The lovely Sez from BB came with me to hold Sas, so that made it easier, i didn't have to worry about 2 of them.

Kate - big hugs out to you and Sarah. Do the IL's know what's going on?

Trill - hope it is something simple like giardia.

By the sounds of it, our poos are fairly good. Pretty solid, we can often see the lump sticking out the back, if she doesn't tell us she's done one (lots of pointing, waving of hand in front of nose and saying pooey!!)

Beautiful day here, we had a lovely walk along the beach and then to the park. K saw the big kids playing on the thing that you hang on to a handle and it slides across between two platforms and she was desperate for a go. She was really good, was able to hang on all by herself with me just walking underneath ready to catch her! Constantly amazed at the things she can do!!

Still having issues here he seems to be feeding well never going more than 3hrs during the day often with a small feed in between the bigger ones which makes him only going an hour sometimes.. At night he went around 5 again last night but once again with a small top up in the middle so he sees to be feeding really well but he's still not weeing much.. He has one super wet nappy at about 6am I mean it looks like a days worth of wee in one nappy and then in his other nappies it looks like there's only one wee or none and since friddays poo we havnt had another one.. Were going to the gp tmw but I just feel so down about it all.. I've got him feeding and im trying really hard but even tho he feeds and feeds and I have heaps of milk which I know he's getting coz he's sucking well and if he comes off milk goes all over him lol but still it dosnt seem he's getting enough :( im starting to feel like there's something wrong with me.. I really don't want to bottle feed this time but it looks like im just not doing a good enough job.. Sorry for the winge just needed to get it out will let u all know how tthe gp goes tmw.. Noni, there is NOTHING wrong with you hun! Of course he is going to have a super wet nappy after a 5hr sleep compared to during the day when he is being changed more often. Are you using cloth or sposies? The sposies are going to make a 'normal' wee seem a lot less than it would in a cloth nappy. And you have to stop thinking like a formula feeding mum too - you know you have milk, you've seen it and it's hard to rationalise that they are getting enough when you can't *see* how much they are having, but you just have to keep feeding him till he just can't fit anymore in and he will be fine

We are using disposables and its not that he has a super wet nappy after his sleep its that that seems to be close to his only wet nappy... u really have to search for wee in his other nappies n sometimes there might be one but a lot of the time he's dry.. Maybe im missing it coz they are disposable? I know im acting paranoid I just want everything to be perfect which is not possible at such an early stage lol

Sposies are meant to draw away the wee and lock it in those crystals inside the nappy to keep it dry, so if he's not a big piddler anyway, then a sposie will make it seem like he's really dry. I would go and buy some terry flats - just a dozen would do, just so you can get a better idea of how wet he is otherwise it's going to do your head in worrying about it. Of if you don't want to buy any, just get a hand towel and fold it up and put it on him like a nappy just for today and see how that goes. And also if his fontanelle isnt caved in looking and if you give his skin a gentle pinch, let it go and if it goes back to where it was straight away then he's not dehydrated at all and he's getting enough.

If baby is gaining well on mom’s milk alone, then baby is getting enough. A 5-7% weight loss during the first 3-4 days after birth is normal. Baby should regain birth weight by 2 weeks. Once mom’s milk comes in, average weight gain is 6 oz/week. If these goals are not met, call your lactation consultant. More on weight gain.WET DIAPERS: 5 - 6+ sopping wet diapers per day (after 1st week).
Expect one wet diaper on day one, increasing to 5-6 by one week. To feel what a sufficiently wet diaper is like, pour 3 tablespoons (45 mL) of water into a clean diaper (if baby wets more often, then the amount of urine per diaper may be less). Urine should be pale and mild smelling.DIRTY DIAPERS: 3 – 4+ dirty diapers per day (after day 4).
Stools should be yellow (no meconium) by day 5 and the size of a US quarter (2.5 cm) or larger. The normal stool of a breastfed baby is usually yellow and is loose (soft to watery, may be seedy or curdy). More on infant stooling.OTHER POSITIVE SIGNS: After a feeding, mom’s breast feels softer and baby seems reasonably content. Baby is alert, active and meeting developmental milestones.

So try that with the nappy and pour some in and see what it feels like and he is only just 1 week old too - so it will probably start to improve from here on in too.

That's a really good idea re the nappies.. His skin seems good and fontanelle dosnt look caved in just dips a little but u have to touch it to notice.. I noticed the paed touching it when he had his check up fri so I assume its normal.. Thanx again :)

And another thing, is that because it's BM, most of it is digested and there is very little waste, so you can't compare him to Asha in that regard either.

Will try that re the wet nappy thanx heaps for the info.. Not doing well on the poo tho he pood friday which was day 6 for him and it wasn't yellow yet nothing since then either... it wasn't completely black tho like meconium kinda half way between.. I think he's ok tho he looks very healthy and we will see the gp tmw maybe he's just taking a bit longer to get everything working properly than normal..

Noni, how are you doing? Just wanted to say that my W was never a big wetter, I gave up doing night nappies when he was about 6 weeks old because they were never wet. Some babies just aren't. Sounds like he is feeding beautifully, doing all the things a new baby should. Just trust in yourself girly, if he wasn't getting enough then he would be making it known.

Cally, is K a daredevil kid too? W is so reserved compared to the other kids in here - he still won't even jump of a something as low as the couch.

MD, was it H's day today? I hope everything went well and I know that she would have felt pretty and special thanks to you.

Rainy, it was sooo good to get out on the boat again. What is the smallest life jacket you can get? W has one from about 10kg but I haven't seen anything smaller so I don't think we can go out until the new baby is bigger. The only downer to the day was that I choked on a drink and wet my pants and spent ages trying to hide the wet patch from DH until it dried lmao

I have just about finished making a bookcase for Williams room. Just need to give it a quick sand and paint. I made one for the computer room but it ended up being too tall to fit in the doorway so we had to trim a few shelves off and now I need to reattach it and patch it up lol.

wow arte - that's v impressive your woodwork. when i read what you ladies get up to i realise how much i CANT do!! glad you had a fab time on the boat - lol at the pants wetting!
Noni - you are doing a good job, pls dont be hard on yourself. it is very early days and he sounds like he is getting all he needs from you... go to the gp by all means if it will reassure you but trust in yourself and your bod, you are so far along the path of bf if thats what you want... averages and stats are just that - if he is gaining at all, weeing etc he is doing well - and we all know that we KNOW when a bub is hungry. i hope despite all this pressure/anxiety you are enjoying these early days as much as poss. how is A doing? and DH? it is a v big transition in my experience...

Noni - how about just folding a tissue inside the nappy, that will let you know if he has wee-ed. Keep up the good work though, I'm sure everything is going well.

Arte - sorry, I laughed at your wet pants story, how embarrassing!! K isn't really a daredevil I suppose, but she will give things a go. Actually, thinking about it, there isn't much fear there at all.

Asha has been really good we are really proud of her she's always kissing him and hugging she's done sweet things like bringing his dummy to him when he's crying or he's been in the swing and we will come in and his hat and mittens will be sitting on him v cute!!
We got a good wee tonight no urates and not strong smelling it went through a cloth nappy and a singlet a suit a wrap and onto the bed so looks like he saves them up a bit will be happy if he continues to wee like that.. Now to work on the poos!!
As for enjoying it I think I have got a bit caught up in it all have been feeling very down and very tired I love him to bits and am happy he's here but all this crap with his nappies and the hospital telling me to cup feed him etc has all been a bit much and made me extremely emotional and cranky.. Im trying to just relax and go with it need to start realising when im getting worked up over things that probably don't really matter.. Will still go to the gp tmw but focus more on his weight gain if he's put on weight ill be happy and no reason to think he won't have because he did last check up... thanx again for all ur support it means a lot!!

Noni i meant to say, Sas's poos were about once or twice a week for the first 4 weeks. Really different to Lu who was almost every nappy change from the beginning. You're doing a great job, keep up the good work.

arte - where in NZ are you? we just booked a trip to NZ for jan - just to auckland and waheke so not sure where that is in relation to you?

PAP, we are in Ohakune, it is about 5 hours south of Auckland. Waiheke island is meant to be really nice, I haven't been but have heard good things. I don't hear good things about Auckland lol (I assume that it is what Tasmanians hear about mainlanders)

Rainy, I have been meaning to say FAR OUT!! about Jimmy getting teeth already! I was thinking that he was some sort of early teeth freak, then I realised he is just growing up so so quickly! I keep thinking of him as a little newbie, but he is a big bub now. I will have to go on FB and stalk some pics of him.

Noni, hope you are feeling better. I hate the way the hospital staff seem to make heaps of woman doubt that they are feeding right/enough. Hope that he has put on a good bit of weight when you go to the GP.

Kate - lots of big hugs and support coming your way. I think you guys really need to go thru the counselling process cos it sounds as if you both need to clarify where you're at, individually and together. It will also help you understand what has gone wrong, kwim? Then at least you will know, no matter how it turns out, that you've given your relationship every chance. :hug:

Trill, Missy E's poo is soft and unformed more often than it's not...I just thought that was normal? BTW in some areas in Australia (like Darwin) 15-20% of people go around with giarrdea in them...it's in the drinking water (in very low concentrations) and it's not considered a problem unless you have symptomatic disease. It will be interesting to hear what the pathology results say. Do hope it's not oink fever. xxx

Katie - I would love to post some photos but DH has taken the card to work to print some piccies for DD1.

Rainy you must be psychic - yes the roses were light pink! LOL Re the rash, I would go to Dr and get some cream on prescription - if it's not gone after a week or two on that then you ask for the dermatology appt. I will just warn you in advance that the treatment for a lot of skin things involves just trying lots of things until finally one works, kwim?

Well the weekend was huge and I spent a lot of it in state of exhaustion (as I knew I would as soon as the party invite arrived for the same weekend as DD1's shindig LOL). Anyway v.proud that we managed to pull it all off (including the garden being tidied from the shambles it was). DD1 looked gorgeous in her borrowed dress, found some white shoes to match at 5 mins before closing time on Sat arvo (!!), and i did her hair and a tiny bit of makeup so she felt like a million dollars too. :)

And the cake was GORGEOUS...I nearly cried when my friend came in the door. It was this huge (40cm) high cone shaped cake absolutely covered in sugar roses, leaves and a few butterflies. OMG I was still raving about it last night. I asked her how many roses were on it and she said she lost cound around 140. I am so touched by the love and time and effort that went in, I reckon it's practically the biggest boost I have had all year (am getting teary again now just thinking about it).

Anyway, next thing to start planning now is Missy E's birthday...first thing we need to do is pick a date to have the party, going to try to time it for when the ILs are here.

wow, yet again i have missed HEAPS! our internet at home decided to go on holiday, so have been seriously missing this place LOL!

Kate: oh gosh. sounds very full on for you guys ATM. have you thought about what you really really want to have happen for you guys? i say because for me, i tend to emphasise too much on the big picture and forget about my own needs and desires ITMS. it's great that he has initiated the counselling. it can be really really good and healthy to get it out and have someone who is not connected in any way to help guide you guys as a team and as individuals along a shared life path xx

Noni: sounds all pretty normal to me. some breastfed babies can go for 14 days without pooping. i remember once leila went for 11...true, i was going bonkers but she didnt seem fazed at all LOL! as long as he is gaining weight, looks healthy etc i wouldnt be too worried. do you have a good MACH nurse that you trust and can go see regularly until everything with the feeding/weeing/pooing settles? i remember with Leila i would go to my MACH nurse weekly (she was fab!) until i felt confident enough in my ability to feed etc. but that said, you gotta like the person you are seeing...

PP: so jealous! you guys have the best holidays!!

Leanne: hope you have a FABULOUS HOLIDAY!!!! so green with envy it aint funny!

Sherie: hhmm that is alot to think about with A's poo. leila doesnt have formed ones, but they are rarely super runny IYKWIM. hopefully it is just a gut bug that can be zapped by ABs (sounds highly likely, especially if he dabbles in the dogs bowl...oh gosh, leila is addicted to Stellas LOL!)

AFM: all okay here. been a bit stressful, as DH hasnt been getting good games at soccer (I know, no major drama...). DH is really down in the dumps about it and like all good men, he doesnt articulate it or face it properly. so it has been eggshells and tornadoes all weekend LOL!
we are getting excited about the house. it hasnt fully hit me that we can actually move in and PAINT the walls LOL! cant wait! the sold sticker is up now, so will have to find the right time to do a family pic (with the dog too!).

Cally - he kids call that a flying fox - have you been to the adventure park at Kambah/Conder - there are some 'real' big flying foxes for them to play on (when K is bit older, of course LOL). That would be awesome if K and N have have a play date in Oct!!

PP - be kind to yourself - J is getting big but you're still in the labour-intensive part of it! :)

Noni - wow it sounds like you're going great. Be sure to ring the ABA hotline number - they are great at providing reassurance and support. I often felt really unsure of what I was doing BFing wise after seeing Drs/even the MCH nurses, so the ABA ladies were always good for a boost. It's helpful to remember that mothers have been successfully breastfeeding their babies for centuries without drs or nurses telling them if they are doing it 'right' or not LOL. BTW have you got a copy of Breastfeeding naturally? If not I will send you mine (PM me your address) as there's a great chapter in it about supply. :hug:

md- omg that cake nearly made me cry, it sounds so beautiful!!!

MD - Yep, back in the dark ages we used to live in Kambah so I'm really familiar with that big adventure park there. May have changed though in the last 15 years or so..... Thanks for all the kind words. I am trying to think about what exactly I want and need out of this relationship and obviously DH needs to as well. After giving me some space after Fri night, we ended up meeting up later Saturday night. I had a girls night clubbing etc which we had planned ages ago and I didn't want to bail on it (plus needed a stress relief). DH went over to a mates house for a bbq (Sarah at MILs again, she did really well there :dance:) and they all ended up coming into town as well. We got to talking at the club and I told him that no matter what happens tonight between us, nothing changes. We can't just gloss over what has happened. We ended up having a dance on the dance floor and DH wouldn't let me go. He even told me that once we got home that we can keep on dancing to some music in the living room (big thing seeing as he's not a real dancy person).
He ended up telling me that it was great to see me being Kate for a change instead of acting like Sarahs mummy and at that point I realised that it was awesome to do that. I think DH realised that was a big part of the problem cos I stopped being me. KWIM? So anyway, he also mentioned that I looked hot (check out FB lol)which is also a big step for him cos hes not a big complimenter. So things are looking up but still most definately keeping that appt. He mentioned on fri night that he wants more kids but is unsure about having any more with me cos of how I was after S's birth (ie PND, punching a wall etc). I told him that I can't help whether I get it or not but because we are away more of it that we can work through it better. Second child so not a newbie to it, knowledge that I did get it last time plus he will support me more cos he knows what can happen. So definately have to work though that as well as his dismal communication skills. :rolleyes:
I'm still feeling fragile from it all and cautious about getting to optimistic about it working out in the end but really want to make a go of it. Like MD said, if things do go bad then at least I can say I tried my hardest.

My tongue is still a bit swollen and eating food is a challenge but I have lost 2kgs this weekend from not eating so WOOT!! lol

Had a check up for william today.. It went pretty well, his sticky eye is nothing.. Swab came back negative. Also he has had 5 wet nappies (3 today) that were very wet and had no urates yay!!! Dr said not to worry because the nappies he is wetting are quite wet (had on while we were there) and all kids are different.. He also said with the poo some babies take longer to get all the meconium out then others because its very sticky and hard work for the bowells he said as long as he keeps pooing atleast sometimes eventually they'll be nice and yellow and probably lots of them but even if there aren't not to worry too much.. They said the best thing to go by it his weight... well we weighed him and he'd only put on 15g lol the dr said not to worry that there cld be a difference in the scales and its great he hasn't lost any.. He said he looks very healthy and alert and he has enough energy to cry when he's upset so to just come back on friday and check on the weight again so fingers crossed he gets his piggy pants on and puts on a stack of weight!!
Md - is that the book that comes with the aba subscription? If it is then I have it. Thanks tho have flipped through it must take a good look! 140 sugar roses!!! How lovely!!!
Trill- same thing happened to asha a few months back well quite a while ago now gee time goes quick!! We had to pull her out of childcare and everything coz after months of it and them thinking it was a food intolerance it turned out to be cryptosperidium another water bug there's no treatment tho we just had to wait..

arte- forgot to say before, the smallest life jacket we could find was 10kgs but we made sure we got the one with the head support iykwim? jimmy will be ok in that one for summer-he's about 8kg now- and we are getting lewis a new one-without a head support (15-25kg i think?) we went and tried them on a couple of weeks ago.

I was just going to post that about the life jackets - you can't get them for under 10kg. We have the 10-15kg then the 15-20kg one with a neck support because if something does happen and they get thrown from the boat, they will have their head out of water kwim? Plus if you are in open water it's easier to keep a child afloat for a long period if they can lay back on the head support. But the Rip Curl one we got for Erin goes from 12-25kg without the head support and there is no way known I would feel that Alister would be safe in it even with the crotch strap.

Noni, See? we told you you were doing just perfectly. That's great news from the Dr. Don't forget he will have his 3wk growth spurt soon too.

G, I can't believe he has teeth already! I know it's not totally outrageous that he does have them at this age, but now that makes him a big boy LOL. They lose a little more of that babiness with each tooth they get i reckon.

Kate, it sounds like he really does love you still and wants to make it work, but he just doesn't know how to do it. I bet it's a load off for you to hear him say all that too :hug:

MD, that cake sounded absolutely divine! I would love to see a pic of it when you have time. I'm guessing H looked a picture too.

Clare, I can imagine how he would feel about not geting much game time. That would be so exciting to see a sold sticker on the sign too. I would keep driving over there and looking at it if it were me LOL. How is your Oma and Opa going?

Anyway, things are OK here - Alister is over the worst of his croup, so no more vomiting up, but he's lost weight because his pants are sitting lower again. But I did manage to get a sample today for the path lab (and boy was it a doozy LOL). So hopefully we will have the results by Monday. And he's eating again too. On Sunday all he ate all day was popcorn :rolleyes:

Hello everyone...I think we might have had our first proper sentence in the wee hours. Missy E who had managed to squwark her way into our bed, hear puss scratching in the dark, popped her head up and said "what doing meowmeow?" Hehehe. Not quite grammatically perfect but it's a start!!! :D

MD, we had a visit to green snotsville here last week, then it cleared up as quickly as it came! I really couldn't be bothered with another round of colds, sometimes I really do think the universe only gives us what we can handle (and I can't handle that much lol). Yay for the first sentence too!

Rainy and Trill, yip, we have the 10kg head support jacket for W, looks like bub won't be big enough to go out on the boat this year. But it won't be a total loss, there are some nice beaches on the lake that we can drive to and launch off, so I can sit on the lakeside with bub while the boys go out.

I will post a pic of my bookshelves on FB as soon as I have patched up the butchered one lol. William is very excited to be getting his ones inside tonight, he is planning what toys to put on it.

We got a new t.v receiver thing and there is a wholesome kids channel (ie pre-school shows, nothing violent) and W has been watching it a bit. We saw one show and I pointed out a robot, then later that day he started goose-stepping around the house saying "being a robot". It is hilarious! He is getting quite a good imagination now, so cute to see.

trill- ikwym about jimmy being big. he's nearly got 2 teeth and is chewing on everything! poor little man.

i bought jimmy a new pair of oobi overalls last week and they are crap! they're like the ones you bought him ange (which he wore to death), but they are the newer season and they've changed the buttons to press studs and they pop open constantly. i hate them! luckily they were on sale....

dh has to go to sydney for 2 or possibly 3 nights in a couple of weeks and i'm trying to decide whether to stay home alone or whether to pack up the boys and go to dad's. what would you guys do?

one other thing, lewis has become quite obsessed with drinking out of one of those tommee tippee close to nature baby's bottles. he absolutely loves it and cracks it if you try to give him a drink in something else. do you think this is an issue or should i just go with it?

Rainy I would just go with it...can't see any harm there... soon enough it will be another different toddler obsession. Maybe from time to time when you're all having a drink offer him drinks in a 'big boy' cup like yours and praise him like crazy when he drinks from it. Also if you have a tea set, fill the tea pot up with water, he can practice pouring water and drinking out of the tea cup. Again praise like crazy. I doubt he'll still be sucking on the baby bottle when he gets to high school LOL.

OMG Arte you have proper tv!! William the robot, what a crack up! I kwym about the imaginative play, I love watching all the things Missy E is doing right now - from being animals, to 'eating' the food pictures out of the book, and walking her dollies around and making them talk to different ppl in the room (including the cat who's usually asleep when this happens LOL).

K was walking around last night with one of her dolls in its sleeping bag, just patting it on its back to get it to go to sleep. Tears in your eyes gorgeous!!

Arte - I was going to ask about sleep too, how is it going? Woohoo to TV!!

Kate - glad that things are looking up for you and DH. I think that is a big thing, we become a mummy and the other part of our life (that DH fell in love with) goes into hiatus a bit.

PAP - mmm, muffins.....

Feeling so much better today. K had a big coughing attack last night before I went to bed and DH offered to sleep in the other room so I wouldn't be disturbed. I crashed before 9:30 and didn't stir until 5:45, fell asleep again for another hour. Gosh a good sleep makes me feel human.

DH has a late night tonight at work. Hopefully there are no freaky noises like last week - heard things crashing and a door slam, there were papers all over the desk (that the cat pushed off the printer), but I couldn't remember if the bathroom door had been shut last time I walked past, so I just avoided it for the rest of the evening!!
