yeah i know, i saw that too. hopefully with the mod closing it (finally!) she will have time to recuperate from the attacks. never very nice...went through it all a couple of weeks ago and man, it feels ugly.
I saw that about Mbear, I hope she reconsiders. The mods seem to be less forthcoming with their purple writing than they have been in the past - I have been surprised recently by some of the stuff that slips thru or maybe I've just never noticed it before?
Ginger - Russian blues are gorgeous, one of my girlfriends had one when we were at high school...personality plus!!! LOL Is Georgia a political word play on the russian theme LOL? I'm not a big fan of people-names for animals so I would say wait until she's been at home with you and then pick a name.
I read that Mbear was leaving too. I know I did post in that thread and you probably think it wasn't nice, but I will not give kudos to someone who thinks it is appropriate to speak to a person the way she did, when she actually did the same thing herself. I know the whole 'heat of the moment' thing happened and maybe in hindsight she would have acted differently, and yes, there were some terrible replies to her, but I think she will come back, not that she is around much anyway but still, once this blows over she will be fine. As for the mod thing, I don't think any of you appreciate how hard it is to deal with a situation like this. For one, it may happen on a day when there is limited Mods available to deal with it, and at all times mods give members the chance to self moderate - no point in jumping the gun and shutting a thread when in all likelyhood it will settle on it's own. You have no idea the catch22 that mods find themselves in - we would get blasted for not acting quick enough and closing a thread or removing posts and then when we do we got blasted again for taking away peoples freedom of speech often those accusations were by the same members! Sometimes we just couldn't win no matter what we did. And then there is having a thick enough skin to deal with the fallout from something happening - being called a 'pack of *****es' on FB by members is really tough to deal with, especially when those members are back nice as pie to your face but can't wait to stick the knives in your back at the first opportunity. It is one of the toughest gigs around and I think that fact is underappreciated. I also notice that this is the first time in this thread that Mod actions have been talked about, and I don't know if that was because when I was a Mod you felt like you couldn't say anything (which I hope wasn't the case, I thought we could talk about anything?) or if this is just because Mbear was in our belly group? Dunno, either way, things like this do happen. It's never nice when it does, but given time for hot heads to cool off, it usually ends up OK
i think we are mentioning only because the mood in BB lately has been rather icky. there has been a shift towards nastiness (that i have seen happen time to time and i know that it will shift again back to happiness!). so i guess it's just a culmination of many different threads/scenarios etc. but i also felt that in the Mbear thread it was posted in the punching room thread and as one poster pointed out some of the criticism of the OP was out of line regarding BBs policy. in this case i reckon it did take too long to shut-down the thread for cooling off. it was obvious that the OP was distressed and that the comments were out of line. But then again, i guess it is up to the OP (?) to flag that with the appropriate mod?
Trill, I think it is just a coinky-dink that mods have been mentioned now that you are no longer one. I certainly never felt like I couldn't say anything (not that I have much to say). On that note, where the heck do I find the BB email??? I have looked everywhere!
I do feel bad for MBear, she was obviously upset by the situation and in hindsight I don't think she would have reacted the same.
The new fridge is great. We bought our old 220L one when the most important factor was cost. It did alright for just us, but somehow we need more room than we used to. The new one is 370L and is sooo spacious! If only we had more food in it though, there are about three things rattling around in there lol
Clare, I looked back to the ER thread and I was shocked at how rude some of the posts were toward you!
Gosh Cass, if you've been around here as long as I have you would have seen that over the years there have been some spectactular blow ups and fighting LOL and it does tend to come in waves. But you find that in a real life community as well. i do understand what you mean though, but even if it is posted in the boohoo room, does that also mean that the support must be 100% what that person wants to hear or be in complete agreeance? I know it isn't always helpful at the time to hear that maybe you didn't do the right thing either, but sometimes support isn't always in the form of agreeing with you completely. That doesn't mean that a person can be outrightly abused or mocked though.
I've seen threads just like that one where it has turned into a MASSIVE witch hunt against the person the member was talking about and that isn't fair at all when they cannot defend themselves, so someone has to do that for them kwim? I guess I am a bit senstive to stuff like that because I copped a bit of flack after L had his accident and broke his arm and I don't think ANYONE deserves to have a thread created about them by strangers and talked about like that. i would have been devastated if what happened to L had of been talked about on here "Oh I saw this little boy hit buy a car today and it turns out that his mother was in the supermarket nearby and let him cross the road on his own. I mean, what kind of a mother does that? Some people just dont' deserve kids" Similar situation - I made a judgement call based on perceived risk (I thought there was none) just like that person did, even though it was illegal what they did and it's really not a nice situation to put yourself in.
Maybe the Mods could have intervened quicker but then sometimes threads can take off far quicker - I have seen threads grow to 5 pages long in an hour and if there are no mods online at the time to deal with it then it can unfortunately get out of hand quite quickly. And if no one reports anything that they think isn't right, then mods don't always know a situation has gotten out of control. Not just the OP, but anyone. I'm not defending or criticising the way the mods handled this at all, but just explaining how it works sometimes
It is this time of year that BB gets a bit snarky, I think it must be the change of season?
Trill, I didn't know that was how L broke his arm. I don't think it is unreasonable to let a 6 year old cross the road by himself - at 6 I used to go to the shop over several unmarked road crossings by myself (to buy people cigarettes with a personal cheque lol).
LOL Arte, I remember doing a run to the shops for mum when I was 7-8 and taking $10 and a note to give them asking for her brand of cigarettes. I didn't think it was unreasonable either - we live in a small town and the quiet road he had to cross should have posed no problems, and it was just an unfortunate accident, but yeah, I would be crushed to think people thought that way about me. I don't like to talk about it much for that reason
i'm really sorry if i've upset you trill. i do not think it was the mods fault at all...and tbh i don't have an opinion either way on the situation that she posted about. i guess i just felt that she had been really upset by the whole thing and seemed like she had lost sleep about it all and i felt for her, you know?
i'm sorry if i've sort of opened a pandora's box in here too. i really love bb. the good and the bad- it can't all be bluebirds and roses, and tbh i love the way that threads on here can really get me thinking about situations in a different way. there's people on here who i find so interesting and intriguing- even if i don't always agree with their ideas or methods of getting their point across.
Nah G, it's all good you haven't upset me. I feel for her too. I know the feeling when you've said something that isn't the popular choice and you kinda wished you didn't say it.
ok...cool...didn't want to start any trouble!!! LOL
md- i totally don't get the russian political reference at all- you know i'm not that smart! i just thought it was a pretty name and was actually the name of a girl i used to know many years ago..so you have to explain it to me now LOL
G, Georgia is a border country to Russia which was was given independence after the fall of communism in USSR (also the birthplace of Stalin). It does seem an appropriately themed name for a Russian Blue cat.
ahh well it is good to know that other posters can report on a thread they reckon is going haywire. i shoulda done that wiht the ER one lol.
man, i used to walk 3 kms to school when i was 6 years old...i guess times have changed?? i actually remember that thread, and man it was a doozer too.
Arte: i reckon you're right, i put it down to change of seasons...ppl get narky lol.
oh and my mum's fridge blew up last week while she was here in melbourne. got home to oozing tropical fish coming outta the freezer....ewwwwwww! it's going to cost in excess of $400 and the warranty ran out only a few months ago apparently the program boards (that control temp) can go crazy and once they do that you need to replace them. man, my fridge must be old as it has thermostat control...but we need a new (bigger) fridge and i am hoping to old school it lol.
AFM: we are pretty good here. Leila is just divine and chatting heaps and heaps and singing even more. especially 'row row row your boat'...but only the line about the crocodile...suits her morbid sense of humour me thinks lol.
Trill, I've never mentioned the mod thing before because I'd never been embroiled in a contentious thread, but I've noticed a few recently (like the one Cass got caught in)...is it because the membership base has grown past a certain point? - There always used to be a core group of people who would jump in with very balanced and tolerant posts but these days there seems to be more post-now-think-later comments (often with a condemnatory tone)...I just don't remember that so much in the past? Or maybe I have been living in own sweet MD bubble LOL. Trill you're right most of us are unaware of the sort of biartchy carry-on that goes on, I find it very uncool-for-school to comment on one site about another site's members! I didn't mean for my comment to be a criticism of the mods either, sorry if it sounded that way, I think they do a great job, if they didn't I wouldnt' still be here LOL. FWIW I don't have a strong opinion about Mbear's post, just sorry she feels offended enough to want to leave what has previously been a good place for her, kwim?
Trill I didn't realise that was how L broke his arm - gosh you must have been so upset - I think you're right about perceived risk and that opens up a whole other thread about degrees of helicopter parenting etc LOL.
Arte, glad you're loving your new fridge...Ours is too small and I'm completely *over* having to rummage around down the bottom for fruit & veg, I have told DH the next one's gonna be one of those upside-down fridges.
Cass LOL at your mum's fridge having an on-board flight computer - ours still has the old-fashioned thermostat - infact last time it broke I told the repairman what needed fixing and he just orderedd the part. Love the "old fashioned technology" (haha that's one of my favorite phrases these days, trot it out anytime I'm telling DD to use something like a pencil and paper, landline phone, dustpan & brush etc ) BTW row row is one of Missy E's faves too, and can be heard quite happily singing to herself long after the lights are out.
thanks for explaining the Georgia reference Arte
i think i love it now! it so suits her and whenever i think of her, i think of her as Georgia now so i think it's stuck!!
md- thanks for articulating what i was trying to say about mbear- i agree totally with 'I don't have a strong opinion about Mbear's post, just sorry she feels offended enough to want to leave what has previously been a good place for her, kwim? '- i guess that's what i was trying to say.
well you know i told you guys we are heading to echuca tomorrow for a family holiday- it's actually for my dad's 70th birthday and my brothers and SIL are coming too- well the funniest thing just happened. the real estate agent who are renting the house from just rang and said it has a plumbing problem so they are upgrading us to another house and it is a waterfront mansion! LOL it has its own pontoon on the river and an indoor heated pool! how funny! the boys are going to have the time of their life- i don't think i'll see dh for the whole time though, as he'll be on the river somewhere LOL so excited
