Retroverted uterus... what does it mean?

Hi everyone,

I had my 6 week checkup last Friday (a few weeks late! Oops!) and my Dr told me that I have a retroverted uterus. I know that it means it has kind of fallen backwards but what does this mean for me??

My Dr said it is nothing to worry about and when it comes time to TTC #2 that it won't make any difference. The only difference that it may make is to my period and they may a bit more painful and I might get some back pain too.

The Dr I saw is a bit to cruisey for my liking and I would also like the opinion of you lovely BB ladies and gents! (my usual Dr was on holidays )

I aslo have a retroverted uterus and have been told the same as you. For me I do get back pain during AF - so I guess this explains why.

It should not effect conception or pregnancy, it's just the position it's laying in at the moment. Some tilt forward and some tilt backwards, but either way it's just something different but nothing to worry about.

It means that you are in a group of women who number about 30% of the female population who have this condition. In most cases you will not notice any difference. Also your utreus could have been retroverted ever since you were born. It is possable that you may find that your periods are more painful and the back pain wgich is often more like an ache can be a bit uncomfortable. But again this only affects a few women

I had this after DD was born but by 5months PP (when i went in for a smear) it had gone back to laying forwards. My (new) GP told me sometimes the round ligaments shrink a bit slower than the uterus so it takes time for it to all put itself back where it's going.

My ob told me that I also have a retroverted uterus. It didn't have any effect on concieving. I noticed that my contractions caused mostly back pain..maybe that was due to the way my uterus faces?

It's very, very common. I have it, have never had a problem conceiving whenever I've wanted to and my periods have always been painless.
I only found out when I had my first scan with my first pregnancy and it was quite early and they couldn't see properly because of it. This has been the only issue with it really - always have internal scans in early pregnancy because with my uterus sitting further towards my back it's harder for them to see. By the time I get to my 20 week scan it's fine.

I was told mine was retroverted when I had my first ultrasound. I've never been told it was again with any subsequent ones so I don't know if it's fixed itself or they've not bothered to mention it cos it appears to be so common. At the time I was told it was retroverted I did get painful AF's but I don't anymore.

A retroverted uterus is nothing to worry about. All it means is that yours tilts backwards in your pelvis instead of straight up. It is usually genetic so you may well have been born with it, usually there is no health problems associated with it and wouldnt affect conception.
If you are pregnant then usually by the end of the first trimester the uterus has straightened itself out.

Emma27 - if your contractions were mainly back pain then I would say this is most likely due to the position of your baby while you were in labour more than anything else. :-)

That's exactly the same explanation I was given......oh it was likened to be a left handed person. Different but still normal.

Nothing to worry about. But it can make it tricky for early pregnancy ultrasounds...as the angle of the sound waves distort and don't show the true size...causing a heap of worry as you can imagine. I always have a vaginal ultrasound because of having a retroverted uterus...there are lots of sites about this...just be careful what you read!!!
