That's probably one explanation, but I'm sure I read somewhere that a couple of religions actually believe us to be Gods, we're simply not using our full capacity - maybe it was Freemasons? Maybe I'm getting it all wrong, because I think I read it in Angels and Demons (Dan Brown novel). Do we have any Freemasons in the house??
