Explain why you chose to apply for the course(s) for which you are applying (e.g., interest in field or employment goal)
I recently experienced pregnancy, labour and childbirth for the first time, and I fell in love.
I had such an empowering birthing experience that I am now compelled to work in the field with professionals who deliver such high standards of care during pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period. I thoroughly enjoyed reading, researching and asking my antenatal midwife many questions. I became obsessed with birth; this knowledge ensured I was informed and in control of my labour experience. My son was born into the hands of an obviously inspired and devoted midwife, who gave me extraordinary care in labour; and I aspire to give that same level of care and support to other pregnant women.
I am fascinated by pregnancy and drawn to pregnant women to discuss ideas and choices regarding childbirth. I want to educate women, to give them a voice, and to strengthen their belief in their bodies. I want to provide a supporting role, and continuity of care to mothers and their families though this precious time. I want to be an ear to a new mother that needs to debrief her child?s birth. I really, really care about being a positive part of any woman?s pregnancy, labour and birth experience.
After months of spending my spare time watching birthing videos, reading recommended texts and, most recently, watching ?The Business of Being Born? I am feeling even more inspired and I know that becoming a midwife will be an extraordinarily worthwhile and satisfactory career.
