hippie - Zander does this ALLLLL the time - so I just stop basically and call it over until next time.

I was just about to post that I will continue to lurk but dont feel I am contributing anything useful at the moment cos Z just doesnt eat. Dont get me wrong, he continues to grab my hand with any type of food and shovel it in, gets whatever is on his tray and shoves it in, but it all comes out again and nothing is actually going down. So I feel a bit of a stalemate like, do I continue to try other things or not or just keep to the same old things????

I will give those pancakes a try - i have two others to get ready in the morning and school dropoffs, so might leave it and try it on the weekend.

I was curious and opened a tin of baby custard - which he ate a tablespoon of - the bugger But he cant live off custard

Will post from time to time until he gets the gist of it all

Sami-I did exactly the same thing with the custard and he ate the whole jar!! And my thoughts were "well you can't live on custard!" He thought it was great.

MummyTummy - Thanks for the food suggestions for taking out and about.

Georgi - That's a great idea with the cucumber. I hadn't thought of that. I saw you said you took a chicken tenderloin and pieces of fruit. Can BJ eat those things? Or does he just suck on them?

At the moment I am finding that Maya cannot eat anything unless it turns to mush in her mouth. So she can eat banana and cruskits and that's about it. She refuses to be spoon fed, except for mashed potato which I do give her on a spoon still. And today I tried chicken for the first time but I really couldn't think how to give it to her except to mince it and offer it on a spoon, which she did take. She cannot eat things that require chewing. At the moment most foods just sit in her mouth until she spits them out or they fall out. So I am reading about your lovely recipes like pancakes and slices but she won't be able to eat them. Does this change at some point?

Hm, seems like the season for kids not wanting to eat properly. The only thing I can consistently get Peter to eat is arrowroot or bread with butter. I just started making home-made bread in my breadmaker and he absolutely loves it. But many other things are getting rejected. Pasta ended up ALL over the floor. Sigh.

    Those pikelets sound yum.

LOL I think it must be the season for it! Liam won't eat much at the moment either.

He has yoghurt and some purees, but all the chunky stuff we've been trying has been rejected of late. Even the cruskits and Mum-Mum rusks which he used to gobble up - he now just licks them.

We gave him a small box of sultanas to play with the other day and he tried the sultanas... but he ate more of the box Today DH found him trying to eat a pebble of cement. Why won't he eat FOOD??

    Annoying, isn't it?

SAMI I think you should still post. I like hearing where Z is up to, even if it is only little

TANYA Yep, BJ eats it all up. I don't know how! The first time I gave him a piece of chicken I was expecting he would just suck on it, but nope, gobbled it all up. It definately takes a bit of time though. It took a couple of weeks of lots of gagging before he got the hang of it. That zucchini slice I talk about is very, very soft. May would easily be able to eat it. It kinda just crumbles. Even if she doesn't eat it, it's a healthy lunch for you

    NETTIE LOL, that's too funny

HIPPIE Could he be teething? Alot of bubs go off their food when teething

Hey KYLIE.. Thanks for the recepie, will def give it a go. Sounds yummo!

BJ had spiral pasta again yesterday. Once again I used pureed veges as the sauce & grated some cheese with it. He gobbled it all up but gosh, made a massive mess. He also had a couple of zucchini muffins last night for dinner, with some avo & cucumber, which are definately his faves. I think i'll make those pancakes for lunch. DH would probably like some too, i'm gonna put EBM in it & see if he notices he he he he....

Georgi - LOL on mixing BM with the pancakes. I'm sure your DH won't notice. I was wondering which pasta is best to start with. Have you tried any other types of pasta other than spirals?

I'm finding that Maya will still eat but she is unable to eat a lot of foods.

Ravioli was the first, but it wasn't successful. It was too hard for him. Then we tried spaghetti. That was great. I now give him the spirals cause the vege puree sauce sticks into the grooves. The packet says to boil for 11 mins, but I boiled it for 20 or so.

Georgi - K loves ravioli, like you I cooked it longer than it says to do on the packet so its a nice soft texture for him.

Ahhhh I just had a thought, thats probably why K's poo is smelling so bad the past few days hahahaha all the ravioli OMG its been vial

K had snitzel last night for dinner with mashed potato and mixed vege, the snitzel was a hit - he ate a whole piece to himself the little piggie (cut up into small pieces of course) hehe had it again for lunch as there was some leftover and I wasnt really in the mood to get creative - he's been grotty all day; let's hope it means his teeth are cutting

    We've had a bit of a breakthrough.

Liam will eat most things as long as they're in small pieces for him to pop in his mouth. We tear whatever it is into fingernail sized pieces and he can't help himself!

Lunchtime it was some sausage out of a sausage roll (my lunch ) and tonight at tea it was some chicken. He's not had chicken before and quite liked it! He ate a lot more food than he normally would!

I'm very excited and wanted to share in case it helps some of you get your bubbies to eat something...

Maya tried toast today for the first time. I put avocado mixed with chicken mince on top and she loved it.

Nettie - I cut up her toast into small portions and that seemed to work for Maya.

Question - Those of you who offer cereal (weet-bix or rice cereal, etc) how do your bubs feed themselves?? Do you put it on a spoon for them? Or they can use a spoon?

oh goodness you guys are doing great! I was lurking in here earlier, then just kinda forgot and was just trying a variety of things. Well he's not that thrilled with anything from a spoon... so the last few days I started trying BLS again - just with some banana & avocado. Tonight he actually picked up bits of both & put them in his mouth. YAY! It's a nice change from looking at us as though we're trying to poison him!

So now I'm back in a BLS state of mind!

BELFIE Yay! It's the only way I can get BJ to eat. I reckon he eats more this way. I know they say they eat less, but if I was spoon feeding him I would give him what I thought he needed and i don't think it would be as much as he actually eats. I hope it works for you. BJ will pretty much eat anything... Except squash... He refused that one

TANYA When I give BJ rice cereal I load the spoon & let him guide it into his mouth. Plus I have fruit on his tray so he can pick that up & take bites between spoonfuls

NETTIE Yay! So glad you found something that works... For now lol. They change so much don't they

NAGROMEYK Pooooey! I'll remember that when I offer the ravioli again

I made those pancakes for lunch today, but didn't use EBM. I told DH I was gonna defrost some in the freezer & he said NO WAY! Lol.... I said we didn't have any full cream milk & he went to the shop to buy some just so he didn't have to have EBM. Next time i'm not gonna tell him.

Anyway... The pancakes were a hit. BJ LOVED them. They were delicious, thanks Kylie. But I didn't chop the pear small enough & they were too hard for him to chew so they ended up on his tray at the end. Next time I'll grate the pear in.

    Hi guys.

Tanya - Logan doesn't eat that much of the foods I offer him, sometimes he just sucks on things, sometimes they turn to mush and he swallows, and sometimes he breaks bits off that roll around in his mouth for a bit before being pushed out or maybe swallowed. I am not too worried if not much is eaten as long as he is having a go at it as breast milk is still his main food. He is loving any type of meat in pieces, especially chicken and beef in something like a meatball. Regarding pasta I first tried spirals but they end up on the floor quickly. I had some fettucine the other night and it was a hit. He was able to grab it with both hands and he sucked the sauce off (a cream one with chicken avocado and mushrooms). I have no idea how to get him to eat cereal either. He won't eat it off a spoon as I don't think he likes it, and weetbix crumbles so quickly when it is dry!

Belfie - Yay on the avocado and banana. Sometimes I hold the banana or pear etc in my hand, and he grabs for it and sucks on it. I think it is easier sometimes as the fruit can be quite slippery. Logan had a whole banana tonight and just when I thought he was done he kept grizzling and looking at my dinner (hamburger), he shut up instantly when i gave him some of the bun and then let him suck on a piece of the burger! Such a piggy!

Georgi - I used a really ripe pear so it turned to mush in the pikelet. Grating sounds like a great idea.

Has anyone's bubs had reactions to any foods? Logan has a rash around his groin on one side atm, and I think it might be from his wee. The only thing i'm thinking it could be from is the yoghurt (which he absolutely loves) so I have stopped giving it to him for a few days to see if it clears up.

Hi to everyone else and I hope things are going better for those of you who have been struggling. I just take it one day at a time

Well girls my gut instinct was right - even though Zander luuuurves shoving food in his mouth he is not eating and whilst we all tak about the experimenting and taste - he hasnt gained any weight and the prof have scared me off BLS citing new Tasmanian studies about kids not getting their nutrients - i am only worried about his iron levels though. So, tried rice cereal with avo mixed yesterday - get real no way!! Tried it again this morning - again no way - so I need a break frome verything to get some perspective again. See ing a nutritionist on Monday not that she can make him eat, but might make me feela bit better so sad - he loves diong BLS and exploring ..

Sami. Grace didnt really eat much for the first few months and she puts weight on SOOO slowly. i have given up going and getting her weighed, im sick of being told she is under nourished. she is happy and healthy! and my doctor is happy. so we are all happy
hope you sort things out on monday, but i think you could speak to ten different doctors/mchn/peads/etc and gets ten different opinions about BLS!

We put Rafferty's cereals in his bottles. Just one or two tablespoons in with his formula. It makes it thicker, but not too thick for him to still slurp out of the bottle.

This is the best way I can make sure he gets his iron. Just a suggestion for those of you bottle-feeding...

Sami hun, I know how you feel. DS1 didn't eat anything until around 8 months, and very little until nearly 12 months (and didn't become a "good" eater until about 16 months). If he's not eating, it means that he doesn't need it. I know that you are worrying. I know that you feel like your child should be eating food. I know because I have BTDT. And my biggest regret is that I kept pushing him to eat when he didn't want to. I honestly believe that he would be a better eater now if I hadn't done that.

Did you know that babies get more iron from bm than from any other source? And that one of the reasons why exclusive bfing is recommended for 6 months is that introducing solids can actually decrease the iron levels? Solids must not replace bm in the first 6 months, and should still be the most significant part of the diet until 12 months - iron is part of the reason for this. So if iron is what you are worried about, you can stop worrying! Just keep bfing - it's the best thing you can do!

The BLS approach is what I believe to be exactly the right thing to do in this situation. Allow your child to explore the texture, smell and taste, so that when he does want to eat, he will eat a good variety of foods. This is all part of the learning experience. You are doing a really great job. Please try not to doubt yourself
