    Eating your PLACENTA????

i came across an article stating that some woman choose to eat their placenta. They say all u have to do is cook it and it kinda tastes like liver. Its meant to be full of goodness, such as protein etc. What do u think u would do?? would u eat it????
    Im quite sure i wouldnt

I wouldn't personally, but I don't see what is wrong with it - all mamalian animals eat the placenta's of their newborns - even lick them clean, so this is just an extension of that. You can also have it dried, powdered and made into pills to take too. Eating the placenta, or even just taking a bite is an old remedy for stopping PPH (post partum haemorrage)

As a vegetarian that also poses a bit of a weird ethical dilemma ..... even though an animal didn't die to make it, is it still classified as "meat" and if it tastes like liver could I stomach it??

I have no problem with anyone else doing this as it doesn't hurt anyone and the areguments for it make sense. I don't think that I could do it myself, although if it was a life threatening situation I probably could.

There are a few threads about this, do a forum search and you will find more interesting info too.

I have also heard of licking the placenta to prevent PPH.

Nope, I didn't and I wont. The same as shellfish - I just don't like the look of it! That's enough reason for me
There was a thread a while back with placenta recipes...

Personally I'm not too keen on the idea of biting down on a piece of placenta but I do find it kind of odd that we're so squeamish about the concept of eating something that has sustained and nourished our babies for 9 months or so yet most of us are perfectly happy to allow medical professionals to stick needles containing all sorts of nasties into our thighs within minutes of birthing. And then we eat the 'food' the hospital doles out..... bleerk

If I had PPH I might try the placenta before the chemicals.....

It can seem a bit gross hey Holly, but apparently there are a stack of benefits to be had, so that's why those that can stomach the idea do it!

I didn't know it could be made into tablets, reckon I could manage tablets!

Does licking/eating placenta really prevent PPH? Or do people do it just in case? Are the results documented anywhere, or is the evidence anecdotal? How does that work? Just curious (as someone who's PPH'd every birth so far...).

In some islander cultures that is part of the birthing process....

Nope, I wouldn't eat it either, however there are a heap of things you can do with it. You can dry it out and make a tonic and use it for various health ailments too.

Abbey's placenta is in the freezer still too, waiting fro me to get off my bum and plant it

    ick

As for licking it for PPH I think it would make me gag so hard that my uterus would contract and voila - stop the bleeding!

    Liz!

No from me... all I can say is EWW! The thought of it grosses me out BUT with that said.... I can see the beneficial side of it. As someone said before.. it is a normal part of child birth in some places and many people (even a few from BB) would eat it / have it made into capsules.
