becuase you are given artificial hormones your milk will come in but most likely it will take longer day 5-7 ish
in that time you dont need to feed baby any thing else but colostum and the more he feeds on that the quicker your milk will come in.
Lots of skin to skin contact is very important to stimulate your milk supply so try and have cuddles and a feed with your bub as soon as they will allow. When you aren't feeding simply cuddling with your top undone and bubs held close will help too.
As the other posters have said, your milk will still come in. The hormone levels drop once the placenta comes out and this is the first trigger. However, some mums who have c-sections do find their milk takes longer to come in. Usually this will be more related to the temporary separation of mum and bub after the op, than from the op itself.
If you can have the baby with you in recovery it has shown to be very helpful with kick starting the milk hormones, but if not, it helps to have as much skin-to-skin contact as you can with baby when you are back together. Putting your baby to your breast frequently is another thing that will help.
My milk came in bang on 72 hrs after my DD's birth via c/s. You could have set the clock by it! So some of it will come down to your genetic predisposition I would think. My Mum was a fabulous milk-maker too and I certainly inherited that gene.
I put DD to the breast ASAP (still over an hour after her birth, but within the first two that was my cut-off) and made sure she was fed on demand from then on. I was hoping to let her bf in the theatre but it was too cold for me to do skin-to-skin there. But I did absolutely everything else I could to facilitate our bfing relationship.
My milk came in on day 4. My hospital encouraged me to express as much as possible in the lead up to help stimulate it and also because my DS was jaundiced and struggling to attach it meant that I had some colostrum to give him rather than the formula the paed wanted me to give him. Anyway, I do think that the expressing helped to move things along.
Thanks girls! I got tingles reading all that...thinking about bf again!!!!
Mishca - DS#1....day 3.... and he was STARVING! I fed every 3-4 hrs from memory for as long as possible and on the morning of day 3 they (with my permission) gave him a FF and then my milk arrived BIG TIME that arvo.
DS#2...slowly and gradually, I did not really notice it was in....over about 1 week. NJ was born at 4080g and went home weighing 4040g! My milk was fully in...dripping everywhere a day or two after being at home..maybe being in my own environment helped???? One night I feed him for 90 minutes...you read it....on one side...I asked the midwife if I should pull him off and put him on the otherside and she told me to leave him as he was sucking in bursts, not really asleep and it would help bring my milk in! So hard to stay awake with boring crap on telly at night! lol
Mantaray - as soon as I read the part about the placenta - kaching - I knew I knew the answer! Doh!! Bit dopey here sometimes.
Jen13 - I will be in recovery (going on the last 2) for about an hour....an yes....toooo cold too feed in there! DH is rally good and has always given me our boys when I get back to our room and helped me feed them straight away.
