This is good, you're making progress. And mate, seriously, you need to do this. You've got months more breastfeeding ahead of you - don't go through any more pain than you need to. A snip might hurt for a minute, but stopping breastfeeding would have a bigger impact on him (and keeping going like this has serious cost for you).
