Help! Thrush! What worked for you?

I have nipple thrush. I had a crack which then created burning pain all the time and sent my vasospasm off big time... I have been in constant pain for a week. I spoke to my midwife/LC and I definitely have thrush. My nipples are flaky and shiny and the itchy burning pain is unmistakable. I suspected thrush a few weeks ago when I had pain, but I wasn't very diligent with the treatment. Boy am I paying for it now.

I have weaned DD (2.5) cold turkey as I can't bear even two extra feeds a day. DS feeds 2 hourly still and I dread feed times.

Weaning is not an option, but I feel very overwhelmed by the treatment advice. I was told three oral tablet and daktarin on my nipples, but I have been to two pharmacies who try and give me oral daktarin and won't give me more than one diflucan.

    What worked for you?

    Help!

I just used the Oral Daktarin Gel, put it in DD2's mouth after each feed and on my nipples after feeds, then airing them out after feeds with the gel on them, making sure that when I wore breast pads I changed them regularly, it took nearly 48 hours before the pain was subsiding and then it began to improve a lot after that. I treated both sides and DD2 so that it didn't spread as I couldn't see it in her mouth, but didn't want it to spread so best to treat everything, and you need to continue treatment for a few days after the pain has subsided to really get rid of it.

The pain is absolutely horrible, I really feel for you

I did the same as Beema, and I also increased the amount of pro-biotic type foods I was eating. I also ate more garlic (possibly not an option if it gives bub a tummy ache).

It's a horrid feeling - hope you get some relief soon hun!

If you have a script from a doctor, they will give you more than the single diflucan tablet - unfortunately, that was the only thing that worked for me...although the gp figured out I also had a bit of an infection that needed antibiotics - it was a dreadful time. Try to keep your nipples out in the open as much as possible (totally not fun, but it helps)...and if you can get them into the sun even better. I had nipple thrush in the summer and hung the laundry outside topless (our backyard is totally private). I also did everything Beema mentioned.

PS - wash your night shirts and bras very frequently in hot water...I know it's not recommended for bras, but it kills the thrush.

Thanks everyone. The daktarin seems to have helped already. I have also hot washed all my bras and nighties. The worst now is this crack that keeps bleeding. I know slow healing is a sign of thrush, so hopefully once I clear the thrush the crack will heal...

    Thanks again.

Hi, thrush is commonly misdiagnosed. Women can experience these symptoms, but they could be caused by different things or more than 1 thing. Try a creme with a 3 way action - steroid, anti fungal and antibacterial like kennacomb . You will get it on prescription from your doctor. Usually thrush resolves very quickly with treatment
