how long did it take for you parental leave to start?

Hi my naughty little DS2 decided to come 15 days late and I only had maternity leave from my employer lasting up until 42 weeks then nothing! didn't expect him to take that long plus I was really struggling at work (am an RN) too much walking and lifting etc so left at 32 weeks, I HAD TO! was so sore! I put my online claim and all required forms in last wednesday so it has been 8 business days I was just wondering how long it took for yours to start. Also it states online that I need to provide immunisation status for both of my sons as required documents but my new little one isn't even registered for a medicare card yet and we have previously sent our 1st sons stuff in 2 years ago so I don't know why that has come up again. Would this be halting my claim being processed? any advice would be great! I need some money! just had to borrow $500 off my mum to pay the rent as DF only gets fortnightly salary.

Medicare details not being provided won't delay your claim being processed but you will need to provide the details down the track (before bub is 18mths old)

Claims for Paid Parental Leave, FTB and Baby Bonus usually take up to 28 days to be processed.

processing times at the moment are 21 to 35 days after lodgement of paperwork - you're currently on day 9 so still a significant amount of time

once FAO have done their processing, it then gets referred to your employer to accept payments, and payments are sent across to them from there. it will then go with your employers payroll. it can take a while for that to happen. i wouldn't hold my breath on anything being completed until new year if you only put in the paperwork last week. if you're in dire financial hardship, you can contact after day 21 and see if it's possible to hasten the processing at all but there are no guarantees that will happen. and even if FAO process it, is still up to your employer to accept the payments and get it organised from there, so it may take a while to get to you even after that bit is done kwim?

as for the immunisation stuff, that should all be on file if you've provided it in the past - it is automatically requested when any new claim is done though

Good question! I got told that we could lodge the paperwork up to 3 months before due date, which I've already done. Is that 28 day thing apply to me when I submit the birth details as well?

    Yes it does
Lodging a pre claim doesn't mean you jump the queue after the birth of bubs and get paid earlier. It only means that the claim can be checked and any additional info requested before baby arrives to prevent delays later down the track...

Don't forget that your employer also needs to register and, after fao complete your claim, it can be held up pending your employer accepting payment and them making sure it fits their pay cycles for delivery

briggsy - is it easier to just nominate that the FAO make the payments rather than your employer? or is that not allowed?

there are limited situations in which you can opt for FAO to pay. if you're self employed (for obvious reasons), if you have totally ceased work with the employer, if you have been with them less than a year prior to bub being born.... otherwise, FAO and your employer are under obligation to administer it via employer payroll. you can tick the box for FAO to pay, but the application will be denied unless there are certain criteria met...

just thought I'd let you know I lodged my documents and online claim on 1/12 an it was all processed and finalised as of 8/12...having said that, I opted to receive zero rate payments of FTB and nominated my Paid Parental Leave to start in July next year so that may have made it a quicker claim to process. Hope yours is almost done!!

still waiting for even a letter in the mail so I rang them just to see if maybe they didn't get the forms as I posted them 2 weeks ago she said they are there and it is being processed hope it comes soon! I make about a grand a week when I work and make more than my DF so having only one income is killing us! I didn't plan for bub to come so late! I have learnt my lesson now hope this fortnight it is processed

still not even a letter! rang them again to see if it was at least looked at and it is still being assessed, what needs assessing? I only work, have no investment properties or anything it was very straight foward! my son was born 22nd november and thats the date I nominated for it to start so when I get back pay it is going to be taxed SO much by my employer I am just considering going back to work instead as we can only survive until the end of the year on the money we have left. Just having a vent!

eutra - i did mine before you how did yours get done so fast! no one can get FTB while on PPL anyway so that shouldn't make it any faster anyway. I am glad it got done so quick for you though!

you CAN get FTB while getting PPL - you just get part A (if eligible) - part B is not payable for those 18 weeks

if it's been more than three weeks since you lodged the paperwork you can ask for FAO to do their part under hardship guildelines - but it will still mean FAO needing to wait on your employer to accept the payments and then make them for you...

if you go back to work, you lose entitlement to PPL...
