    doudou,
My DH got a prescription a week ago for 30mg (30 tablets) and it was $111.95 from our overpriced chemist. Our PHI refunded us $50.

I just checked Chemist Warehouse, and for the 30mg, they charge $91.99.

    Hi Nick

I found that after 2 weeks the Duromine took away my hunger completely, so I decided that I would open the capsule and take half, keeping the other half for the next day. By doing this I had a small appetite and my script lasted 6 weeks. SO if you calculate $95 by weeks it doesn't seem sooooo expensive.

    Good luck

    hoping to get there....

Hi all - really interesting reading all of the feedback on the use of Duromine...

I have today taken my first dose and am exciting to be doing something to kickstart some further weightloss.

I am 180cm tall and was my heaviest at 116kg - I have lost 16kg on my own with excercising 6 days a week (sometimes twice a day) and having one rest day. And with changing eating habits...ie, substantial brekky and lunch and then a light evening meal with a couple of serves of fruit throughout the day.

Reading 'oddoneout's' feedback really struck a chord and I can realate totally...in that, if I have made the concious decision to use duromine as a TOOL to HELP lose the stubborn weight, then the side effects should be kept to a minimum - as I will be taking it strictly as prescribed and outlined but also making it a stepping stone to my healthier lifestyle...I don't think it's fair to expect to lose the weight 'easily' in the medication and abuse the quick results once finished...with not changing excercise and eating habits in turn...

I am so pumped and look forward to getting to my goal weight (even though it's a while away) of about 80kg.

Thanks for all of your feedback ladies, and I look forward to reading up on your further progress!! It's always good to know there are others out there, in a similar boat trying to reach a similar goal...

    Hi Sarah-

While i was at school i was quite overweight and nothing i did seemed to help drop the weight- i was slogging it out at the gym 5 days a week and barely eating and still nothing... My Gp put me on the Duro's and although they kept me awake after the first month i had lost about 8.5 kg... he decided to give me a second course which by then i was i guess you could say addicted and they no longer kept me awake. the second month i lost about 12 kg so total of about 20 kg in 2 months.

As the duro's had decreased my apatite i was only a piece of fruit at lunch and a small dinner but the weight stayed off with excercice and diet after i stopped the pills. .At 20 i fell preg with my DS and as i still wasnt eating much i was passing out so needed to up my intake of food- resulting in a 26 kg weight gain... lost 8 kg after ds was born and for 3 yrs now have struggled to drop the weight again...

As mentioned they are speed, they do keep you awake, make you a bit perky- also i experiences the shakes after comming off them (first few days) and bad headaches.

There is another type of medication your GP can perscribe but what they do is if you eat bad food it results in a run to the loo- they kinda teach you to eat better and if you dont your punished with a bad case of gastro... I would suggest like the others ask your GP for an alternative.
OMG 20 kg in 2 months - how can any doctor think that's healthy? They say 500g to 1kg per week is healthy and more likely to stay off - that's a max of 10kg at the very limits in the 2 months!
I think that huge a loss is definitely setting you up for failure.

    Hi Everyone,

i've just spent the past hour reading through all of the posts, as i am currently trying to get duromine.

Well here goes, i'm currently 18 years old and have a 2 year old son and weigh 99kgs (Eeekk) with a BMI of 39, before i was pregnant i was a healthy 54kgs and loved my body so pretty much in the past 3 years i have pretty much doubled my weight

i've been to 2 different doctors the first one did like prescribing duromine but has reffered me to get blood tests and 5 free visits to a dietition, the second doctor gave me blood tests and said if the test come back fine she will be able to prescribe it

So does anyone have any good tips for speedy weightloss? i think I might invest in a set of dumbells. Is it safe to do say Celeberity Slim and Duromine at the same time?

    Thanks.

    xXx

    Avoid Duromine like the plague!

Please everyone, I implore you to avoid Duromine like the plague! Apart from being a legalised form of speed, taking it with other medications (such as the contraceptive pill, anti inflammatories, antihistamines etc) can have serious side effects.

In June 1996 I was sick of being obese and a diet doctor prescribed Duromine. Three weeks of manic highs and lows later I couldn't bear it anymore and chucked the pack down the loo. I regained the 10kg lost very quickly.

Two months later, I was on the pill and had a shocking case of hayfever. I took the recommended dose of Sudafed for less than 24 hours. Suddenly one day as I walked back from lunch, I collapsed in the street. I'd had a stroke.

    Yep, thats right... a STROKE.

I was admitted to hospital and subjected to terrifying tests and dozens of questions by various doctors, who repeatedly informed me that the TIA (Trans Ischaemic Attack - or mini stroke) would be followed by another within 48 hours and it was 50/50 as to whether it'd be a big one and kill me. I was traumatised enough, but more so when the doctor explained having taken the Duromine and latterly Sudafed while on the pill could have contributed to the episode.

Apparently the majority of strokes in patients under 30 (and 30% are in patients under 30) are related to drugs. Incredibly, over the counter and prescription drugs used according to the recommendations are often the problem! Duromine speeds up the blood pressure, as does Sudafed. The pill clots your blood more thickly. Put the two together and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Whammo! I had a clot in my brain.

I had a second TIA which I was grateful to survive undamaged. But 48 hours later I had a small CVA (Cardiovascular attack). It was a miracle I survived with minimal long term damage. Since then I've had to take anti-coagulant treatments and for a long time had fortnightly blood tests to check my white cell count.

I was told to conceive a child could kill me and labour or a caesarean certainly would. I chanced it, having a brilliant GP and neurologist who worked out a plan. My private OB was appalling, but I survived fortunately, and am planning number 2 with a different OB. I'm still high risk due to the anti coagulants and can't take antihistamines or anti-inflammatory meds. Nobody will cut me, meaning surgery is fraught with added risks - made my wisdom teeth removal an in-patient joy, not to mention the 7 days in hospital following the post-pregnancy hernia repair!

I urge you all - don't take anything you absolutely don't have to take. Stay in bed and sniffle into tissues for 24 hours. Miss work, its not the end of the world but don't take sudafed. If you want to lose weight, consult a dietician and get a personal trainer. If that doesn't work for you, consult one of the obesity clinics that has opened up around the place. I'm going for lap-band surgery soon. It will be complicated by the anticoagulant treatment I'm on and it frustrates me that something prescribed by a so called doctor could have such long lasting detrimental effects on my health.

Please don't join me. Tell the doctors to shove their Duromine and potentially save your life.

Duromine - avoid it like the plague

Rather frustratingly I spent ages last night adding a post to this thread that showed last night, but has disappeared today. Any moderators able to let me know why?

I urge you all to throw the Duromine in the rubbish and consult a dietician. Would you take speed? If not, why would you take Duromine?

I was prescribed Duromine and two months later suffered a series of strokes at the age of 24. My neurologist advised me that 30% of strokes are in patients aged under 30, and that most of these are drug related. Incredibly, many of them are as a result of taking prescription meds according to the script and one of the worst of these is Duromine.

I don't recommend anyone risk having a stroke. I am now on anti-coagulants for the rest of my life. It made conceiving more difficult, labour/caesarean more dangerous and any surgeries twice as dangerous for me. (Wisdom teeth, hernia repair - both required hospital admission and specialist monitoring.) I had a nervous breakdown after the strokes and suffered depression for ages. I've recovered with only mild remaining symptoms, but I was told this was incredibly uncommon.

Overweight people are more likely to suffer a stroke. Add in Duromine and you are asking for trouble. Why risk it? The only way it is a quick weight loss is that it is speed. Duromine speeds up the blood pressure. If you're on the pill (I was) it clots your blood. Put the two together (or add in 2 Sudafed tablets in a 24 hour period as I did) and it ends up with a blood clot in your brain. Not recommended weight loss practice.

Rainbow - Yep, mood swings are definitely a side affect. My friend describes them as being 'Duromine psychosis' as she felt crazy when on them. I felt grumpy and moody and I put it down to my body being tired but not being able to sleep. I am naturally a person who has to sleep at least 8hrs to feel sane.

    Duromine

Duromine is an effective tool in losing weight. It is essentially speed so increases your nervous energy, reduces your restful period and depresses the desire to eat. I lost 10kg in 2 weeks on it, though I barely slept and suffered mood swings while taking it. More importantly, I also suffered a stroke BECAUSE OF DUROMINE.

I know you think you've researched everything and don't want to hear anything negative. But it is important to hear the whole story. I had 2 TIAs and 1 CVA in the space of 3 days, a short time after ceasing Duromine, aged 26. (2 mini strokes and 1 full stroke.)

I was lucky and made an almost full recovery. But I am now on blood thinners for the rest of my life, making surgery more dangerous (even dental work!) and complicating many other issues. My pregnancy was high risk and I'd been advised to avoid having children altogether due to the risk of a repeat stroke. I had to inject myself daily in the belly with blood thinners all through pregnancy and breast feeding. I had several scares and was told my likelihood of misscarriage was much higher.

All because my GP prescribed me Duromine.

Just because a doctor prescribes it, doesn't mean its the best or the safest way to lose weight. Get some real advice from a professional, not from other women on here. Go to a reproductive endocrinologist and get checked out for PCOS (which inhibits weight loss.) Find a weight loss group such as the Big Girls Group (runs at the Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne, but I believe there are others in other states.) Try Metabolica. Try a Naturopath. Try anything other than speed.

The professor who treated me was head of neurology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and remarked that Duromine was often a contributing factor in strokes in people under 30. Add the contraceptive pill and/or antihistamines (such as Codral or sudafed) and you've a clear recipe for disaster.

Do you really want to add to your current health risk? I wish I could go back and throw the packet of Duromine in the bin. I regained the 10kg as soon as I stopped taking them. That choice and the effects of it will be with me for life now. Don't make my mistake. Choose a sensible, safe and long-term method of reducing and then maintaining your weight.

    Smile Duromine

I've started taking duromine again. I took some for approx a month last year and failed to get the repeat filled as it was costing too much that i just couldn't afford. Yes i lost approx 6 kilos on it in a months and i only put a 3 kilos back on but that was my own fault. I overate during the Christmas break and food was being prepared for me.

So i went and got the script filled again 40mg tablets and am on my second day of them. Yes i have had the dry mouth and feeling very happy and relaxed. I have always been a night owl so staying up was never an issue. However, since starting this again I am wide awake at 1.55am. I actually don't mind because i am studying at uni (mature aged student) and stay up late to do my assignments, so I'm not actually fazed by sleepless nights.

I am a single mum to two young children and i want to be able to run after them and feel good about myself. My friends and family have been very supportive and encouraging.

I would thoroughly recommend Duromine as long as you fall within the guidelines of those that should/could take it. My doctor is very supportive and i have known him for about 16 years. He would never put my life at risk if he thought it was dangerous.

I would recommend also that you should read ALL the information that is enclosed with the tablets before taking them. Look for any of the side effects and get it checked.

I will admit though, I am not as stressed as i usually am. Bringing up children on your own can sometimes make you stressed but I couldn't be happier with my babies.

Good luck to everybody taking it. It is a lifestyle change also. Train yourself to eat properely as you dont want to put the weight back on after spending all the money.

Hi Katy, Are you saying that you lost 26.9kg in 1 month?

What did your GP say? That seems like an extreme amount of weight to lose so quickly.

I have taken my first duromine today 40mg, prescribed by a doctor.
i am in my 40's heading toward perimenopause. work out 5 days a week atleast 40 mins serious cardio workout, eat very well but perhaps lapse on weekends or when i drink alcohol. I am 166cm and weight 66 kg.
i cannot shift the weight although it is not heavy, however i am heading toward 58kg.
i am a former bulimic, and have a serious love hate relationship with food. i could seriously have no prob eating a huge meal at any time of the day, and if food is in front of me i will eat it.
i am using Duromine only to stop the urges to pig out resulting in a terrible terrible sense of guilt, unfortunatley what i weigh dictates if i am in a good mood or a bad mood each day.
i am on fluoxetine (for bipolar).
i am teaching myself new habits with this drug, and im going to toss out the laxatives and fingers down the throat forever, see results and kick start the life i have inside my head.
im terrified of the side effects but honestly, laxatives and purging cant be any bloody better. ive given up alcohol and coffee to deal with side effects and will continue healthy eating and exercise.
no one in my family knows im on it.

okay, I am probably going to offend someone here, but how you girls read the horrible stories on here and still go and stick this stuff in your bodies? I thought the original report of 20kgs over 8 weeks was alot, now I read 26.5 over 4 weeks WHAT.
You are seriously fooling yourself if you think you will keep a weightloss like that in that short time span off when you start eating again.

Why, why, why are we so desperate (and I speak for myself too) to live up to some magical image that we will practically kill ourselves to do so??
