Very interesting! I can't believe that most people can't see how insane it is to pay that much for water. I've always thought it was a bit of a crock. However, if I'm stuck out somewhere without a drink, I will buy water before anything else, so I guess I'm glad I have the choice. But I try to take my own drink of water with me most places.
I must be lucky to live in Melbourne, I drink water out of the tap all day long . LOL at your dentist comments Chloe, so true. Whatever else it is or isn't, fluoride is great for teeth If you drink only bottled water, and have no fluoride supplementation, you are almost guaranteed to have dental problems!!!
Our tap water is gross. I have tried boiling, filtering, boiling a second time... not to mention if your out anywhere that wont have happened first. Even our bath water looks a murky yellow when you run it.
Interesting - I just emailed DH about SIGG bottles after seeing this thread (I couldnt' remember what they were called when he bought his bottle) and he said he didn't go with SIGG because it isn't truly BPA free, it's just that they don't leach BPA. He ended up going with Klean Kanteen coz it has no BPA in the lining.
But SIGG have such cool designs! LOL. I'd be happy with it tho I think, so long as we're not ingesting any of the BPA. Am thinking of getting them for the kids.
Oh and on the topic of water... we were having neverfail water delivered for a long time... but now we just have a brita filter on the tap. Much cheaper! And can definitely taste the difference between the filtered and straight out of the tap.
We've also used the brita bottles that are like sports bottles with a filter in them. Very useful when out and you need to refill with tap water. Can't say I looked at what plastic it is tho :/
I totally agree with tap water as the most environmentally friendly option. And unless your pipes are really nasty, it's probably a very pure product. I used to drink tap water all the time. I did use a Brita filter, because sometimes our water tasted a little funny (I suspect old pipes) and the filter got rid of that. Then our government decided to put fluoride into the water.
I just HAD to say something about the fluoride is good for teeth issue. Can't help myself.
Firstly, even if it was good for my teeth, I value my brain more than my teeth.
Secondly, someone mentioned something about not growing up with fluoride and now putting their dentist's children through school. DH grew up with fluoride and has really good dental hygiene. I have good dental hygiene, too and grew up without fluoride in the water and without any type of supplementation. My teeth, although I do have a couple of fillings, are in very good nick. So individual siituations don't really mean that much. The statistical difference between fluroide in the drinking water or not only applies to milk teeth and if you compare areas with the same socio-economic status, the difference is an average of only 1/2 filling per mouth. There is NO difference in the state of the adult teeth.
So, I am very upset at the government 'forcing me to do something that is bad for the environment, ie. buy water. I try to make the best choice and buy water in a cask, rather than a bottle. And of course I do check the level of fluoride in the water I buy (you often have to get into contact with the manufacturer) to make sure it does not contain fluoride at similar levels as tap water.
Sorry, getting off my soap box now.

Nae ... i so agree !!
We have been buying the Brita filters for years & i often wonder about them
My IL's & SIL have one of those ceramic urns too sitting on their kitchen benchs which i'm sure they bought somewhere near to their country town. The water just tastes so much nicer & the water is cool in it in Summer
Would love to buy one but don't have the room on our tiny kitchen bench.
There's a place at Silvan opposite the dam that makes/sells the ceramic water purifiers - I'm getting one for my new kitchen
SIGG are great cause they have a very long guarantee and as they are metal, they tend not to break, just dent Plus also dual metal so some insulation. There's swiss-made or chinese-made to choose from.
I have a selection of tupperware water bottles, I like the design, easy to hold, and the twist-off end is great for snacks or keys or some coins etc. Plus great colours!
They don't leach chemicals Brontide. We love them in this house, we all have one. It helps us to save money because we always take them with us when we go out!
We don't have town water where I live so don't have the chemicals. Our water is collected off our roof and is stored in a very very old well unfortunately it is plumbed in a way that it pumps from the bottom where the water is a bit yuk.
We have a separate tank which collects the run off from the wash house (separate from the house) thats our drinking water. Its ok from the tap attached to the well but I still like the dirt filtered.
We have one brita filter in our fridge but have a porcelin (sp?) water filter on the bench and the water that comes from that is sooo good we just clean the filter candles every so often. It retails for around $140 if you go to farmers/country markets you can ususally find one.
I like these better as I always wonder about things growing in the Brita filters even though we replace them regularly.
