Honestly? It sounds like a way of doing controlled crying without the guilt. I don't have a problem with it - I did "accompanied crying" with Clare, patting her, sitting with her, letting her know I was there with her while she settled herself to sleep.
The theory in this article sounds all very, well, theoretical - I'd like to see some research to back it up, to be honest. It sounds like a pretty tortuous way of justifying the approach that it's okay to let your baby cry if you are there with them and have met all their needs as best you can.
I don't know how this approach would impact on milk supply, either. Comfort sucking has a role to play in maintaining supply through growth spurts. I question this assertion: "The reality is that human infants can thrive whether they are nursed frequently or at intervals of several hours." I'm sure they do thrive - but whether that is on continued and extended breastfeeding or not I guess is what I query.
Oh, edited to add: I'm not sure my nerves could stand sitting there listening to Tom cry for long periods. This kid is LOUD!
