Fallopian tubes 'clipped'

Hello to everyone, I am quite new here!

I have TTC for 2.5 years. I am in the process of having investigations, as I have endometriosis. I will be having a laparoscopy soon, and the doc (who is a endo-gynae-fertility specialist) explained that she will also do a tubal patentcy (or HSG) at the same time. With the view of very likley going down the IVF path, she also told me that if she finds that my tubes are blocked and dilated, she will clip them!!! I was quite taken aback on the day so didn't ask much more about it. Apparently, if you have blocked tubes, they can leak some sort of fluid back into the uterus which can harm an embryo. Has anyone ever heard of this? Would it mean basically that my tubes are tied???? Sorry if I sound ignorant but I am having trouble getting on top of all of this...

Hi Neptune, welcome to BB! I havent heard of this. I had the same test, but all came up clear! I hope someone can provide you with an answer! Try not too worry to much. the specialist who will perform on the day for you will probably show you the results straight away so you can ask questions! Wishing you all the best!

I am fairly new to BB too, so Welcome!. I'm sorry I can't help you with the whole clipping the tubes thing. I have endometriosis and PCO's so I know how you feel. I have also had a Laparoscopy and a couple of D & C's and they aren't too bad. You will be just fine. This is the beginning of your journey. Lots of luck, try not to worry!

I'm so glad I found your post.

I was diagnosed with servere endo when I was 18 and by the time I was 20, I was referred to the top IVF/GYN doc in Melbourne, who basically explained that there was just to much damage to my fallopian tubes. He did infact try several ways (all microsurgery) to repair my tubes, then eventually decided to remove them altogether. I was in surgery for quite some time while he did his best to save them.

They say that 1% of endo sufferers will lose their tubes due to adhesions that bascically fuse them together. I was also told that if they had of left mine there they would have potentially caused harm to my ovaries and uterus, through infection.

Although I was 20 and scared out of my brain, I must say that since the day my tubes were removed I have had almost no pain, it was instant relief for me.

My doc also took photos to show students/collegues because we are apparently so rare.

Anyway in answer to your questions, obviously if there is an infection in the tubes yes then fluid can leak and damage the embryo. And yes I would say your tubes would be 'tied'.

Just to tie up this post, I wanted to give an update on the outome of my doc visit yesterday.

Well, call me ignorant....I had no idea that clipping your tubes meant having them removed!!!! i just thought that they were clipped, and that this was reversible.... Now I understand that they are removed as they can cause more damage left there if they are blocked and dilated.

Anyway, I had a long discussion with the doc about this, and I have decided to just have the lap and hysteroscopy plus the tubal patency thing. There is only a small chance in my case of the tubes being blocked, but I have asked her to NOT clip them during this procedure. Depending on the outcome of the surgery, we may begin IVF.
