    Blighted Ovum - Misdiagnosed?

    Hi,

I was recently told that I have had a missed miscarriage. U/s at 6w3d showed that I had a gestational sac & yolk sac but no embryo.

I have been scheduled for a d&c this Friday, but because I had bleeding over the weekend my gp wanted me to have an u/s to check if everything had gone naturally so I could avoid Friday's procedure.

Today's u/s showed a fetal pole which was not visible in previous scans.. The doc at the u/s office recommended not to go ahead with d&c as yet and a follow up u/s in 1 week and blood tests for hormone levels.

    Is this just false hope?

Grake, I had a blighted ovum last year. I know the pain you are feeling. My ob waited a week to do another scan just in case me dates were wrong and the embryo was too small to be seen. A week later the fetal pole wasn't visable anymore either so I knew it was time for a D &C. Mine was picked up at 8 1/2 weeks after some very light spotting that went away on the same day. The D&C was done at 10 weeks.
It is up to you if you wait and have another ultrasound. It is possible perhaps that the baby is too small as I have heard other storis where the following scan showed a happy healthy baby. The hormone tests will test to see if your levels are rising or falling.
Best wishes hun, the torment of waiting and not knowing is just awful, take care.

Hi erybery, I'm sorry for your loss.
Thanks for your reply and sharing your story with me. I am going to my gp tonight to discuss what is to happen next. Ive read lots of stories that have had happy endings but I don't want to get my hopes up. But just to put my mind to rest I would like to have another scan. That way ill be sure I'm doing the right thing.

Grake - I'd really strongly encourage you to go for that second scan.

Regardless of the outcome ( and FWIW I think you may get a nice surprise) you need to know, down the line, that the pregnancy was definitely not viable.

I've had a blighted ovum (diagnosed at 7wks) and missed m/c at 10 weeks. With the blighted ovum, there was no change between scans and definitely no fetal pole. I think that a second scan is definitely worth doing in your case. If possible, request a transvaginal scan as they show alot more detail than abdominal scans for early pregnancies, particularly those that are a bit iffy.

All the best and I hope things work out for you.

Hon I went for a scan at 6wks and was dated 5wks - tech could not see any embryo etc but did an internal us and found fetal pole told us it could go either way - 2wks later there was bub bouncing away nice strong heart beat and he is now 6yo. I can understand not wanting to get your hopes up but thefre is no harm in waiting for the scan if there is a glimmer of hope. hang in there - hope you get some good news

    Hi Girls and Grake

I agree with the girls that waiting for the scan is a good idea....may be a loooong week for you though!
Being so early in gestation, if you implanted later it may just be quite behind.

I had a BO last year - found out at 8 weeks though.

Good luck i will cross fingers and say a prayer
