First GP appt. with dr, what to expect.....

Ok, so I am seeing my Gp tomorrow. I spoke to the recoptionist at the local GP surgery, who was fantastic and wonderfully nice! I asked who the best person would be to see through the pregnancy, what kind of options do I have for shared care etc, and she was lovely.

So I made an appt. with a GP (I haven't met this one, but my regular GP has left and I just found out just then), another female GP who the receptionist said was absolutely lovely. I am going tomorrow at 4pm.

So I am just wondering, what actually happens. I assume they do BP and that kind of check-up things, but will they be doing anything else? Blood tests? I had a pap smear in February, so I wouldn't imagine I'd need another one...? Are there certain things I should be asking for? Certains things I need to arrange that I should already know about...? This is all new to me, and I have no idea about any of it!

From my expereince it will be pretty uneventful! She will do your BP I imagine and probably bloods, to confirm etc. Maybe even a HPT? It will be just a chat, quick do's and don'ts and probably discuss any tests you may want to think about having like the Downs Syndrome one at 12wks (Nuchal Translucency) and others you can chose to have. You'll discuss options for care, so either the GP, shared care or the midwife program atyour hossie maybe. I dunno, everywhere is different! Just ask anything you want because it will be a while until you'll be likely to have another appt. so any questions you have write them down so you don't forget. Good luck!

    Congratulations!

Some gps will order blood tests and maybe even an u/s (especially if you are not sure of dates), but usually this is left for your hospital or ob, etc to arrange. If you are thinking of going public you might not see your carer until 12-16 weeks in which case you will probably want your gp to order the blood tests. If you think you might want the Downs test, this needs to be done at 11-13 weeks so that might actually be before your first appt with chosen carer.

Have you got any books yet? Up The Duff is great and has a list of questions you might like to ask at your gp appt.

Mostly though, she will really just confirm your preg and ask how you're feeling...

this is wat happened for me.
she did BP, weight, checked when last pap was. then asked questions liek was this first preg do i smoke drink. then told me some do's and donts. she didnt even give me a hpt cause i had so many +ve's at home. then she gave me the referal for the 8week bloods so i wouldnt need to go back till 10weeks.

so yeah not much to do. then at the 10week one she gave me referal for 12week scan, BP, weight and script for tabs for morning sickness.

there isnt really much to the appts.

Yeh not much happens. Usually they just confirm your pregnancy, you may do a pee test, then order either a blood test or ultrasound. Theyll check your blood preasure, ask about your pap tests, ask if youre taking any folic acid, if not start taking.. they may give you a referral for the hospital. But thats about it really. Nothing much else really happens until youre past the 12 week mark, except waiting unfortunately.

thanks ladies. I wondered if it would be a non-event lol! I was just wondering if I should have made a long appt., if there was stuff the dr had to do. And I have lots of questions which is why I made the appointment so early LOL, and Questions I'm not really comfortbale asking my FS... even though he has seen everything anyway, I just don't feel right asking him about sex and if certain things are normal, and all that... Ok, so I should have lots of opportunity to ask questions then. Thanks :-)

I don't think ypu'll need a long appointment. They really don't do much at your first appointment. They did a HPT and ordered full bloods, and checked my BP at my first app. He also gave me a referal to an OB. I'm sure your GP will answer a lot of your questions, but she may also recommened asking some of them to your OB (or midwife if you go that way). Write all your questions down cuz you'd be supprised how blank you go when you walk in lol!!!
You must be bursting with excitment about everything!!! Congratulations to you and your partner! Enjoy every moment of your preg, when its all over you'll miss it... I certainly do!!!
    Take care
