I've heard cooked fish or vegetable sushi, made fresh, is ok...have other eaten it?

....just wondering as, boy do I miss sushi...then i read in 'what to expect' that it's ok, if you have it say at a restaurant (rather than rolls that have been sitting around) and if its just vegetarian rolls, or cooked fish.... so i am about ready to go there! just wondered if others have had similar advice?

I don't know if I would trust sushi from a restaurant, because the main problem is the rice, and while they make them fresh, the rice may have been cooked the day before ITMS?

Safer to make your own sushi at home and eat it straight away.

Sushi rice is NOT cooked in advance - it cannot be.

I ate sushi throughout both pregnancies without incident.
The cause of concern in sushi is the rice, but if it is prepared in a clean environment and eaten that day, then your risk is low. Buy from trusted stores, with a high turnover and as early in the day as possible.

Cooked fish is fine as long as it hasn't been sitting around, same with Sushi and Vege rolls. It's the rice that you need to be careful of the most though - make sure it hasn't been sitting around for ages.

Before being diagnosed with Gestational Diabete's I ate Sushi ALL THE TIME! It was one of my major cravings, especially the California Rolls lol but now the rice puts my blood glucose levels through the roof so I can't eat it anymore
Enjoy it while you're able to And homemade is definately best too

    Hi,

I was careful but not overly careful in my first pregnancy. I ate sushi but stayed away from the cooked chicken sushi and raw fish varieties. I usually ate the tuna salad variety which has tinned tuna in it. I also made sure I bought it from a reputable shop that was busy. In saying this, a friend of mine got sick from eating vegetable sushi (she was not pregnant) so vegetable sushi isn't exactly guaranteed to be safe.

It is very easy to go overboard. At one point I found myself thinking that I could not even eat a salad sandwich from a sandwich shop because they use the same tongs to put ham etc on sandwiches and then use them for the salad.

I think it's a personal choice. It is a balancing act.

    Good luck!

I would only avoid it from things like those shops in food courts in large shopping centres.

If you know the shop I wouldn't worry. I eat sushi but only buy it from one place at my work that I know is flat out, and I've never been sick before.

I dont personally take chances with unknown places. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Speaking of which do you think Subway is ok? I've had some serious cravings for it but have been concerned as a friend told me to avoid it.

i only ever eat tuna sushi (fussy eater lol) and i reckon its fine.. i tend to only go to really busy sushi places, my way of thinking - the busier they are the fresher the food, but thats me

and lolpigs - i still eat subway, if it tastes bad when u bite into it, dont eat it, its no different than buying eg. ham & salad ingredients from the supermarket & making a sanga at home, you know? thats the way i see it anyway

I still eat subway .... as for the sushi, I've heard so many different things and not being a fan of it myself I'm not going to be much help but as other posters have said if you know and trust the restaurant then it "should" be ok as long as the rice is fresh too

Just for future notice, DH read an article yesterday cautioning people against sushi as all the ingredients come from Japan and with the radiation contamination it may be very unsafe. Just something to think about!

I didn't eat sushi last pregnancy nor will I this one. Not worth the risk to me.

That is a load of rubbish.
Sorry, but sushi rice you buy at the store NOW, even if it did come from Japan (which is doesn't all do), is nowhere near the contamination - it was grown packed and shipped months ago and holds no contamination risk at all.
    The same goes for Nori.

I would be suprised if the sushi stores used Japanese product for their sushi. I have sushi rice in the cupboard which is Australian, and the nori is made in China, so I really don't think the contamination is a risk (even if the Nori needs supplies from Japan, there is still a quality control that is required, so radiation and contaminated prodcuts would not be used)..

I ate sushi throughout both my pregnancies. We made it at home whenever I had a craving though, or asked for it to be made to order in a store.

thanks for all the replies...I did end up eating sushi at our local Japanese restaurant which is always very busy and where we have often eaten. I just stuck to the vegetable types or cooked fish..and it was delicious
