So here's the thing...
Many mums2be have our babies via the Public Hospital. And that being the case, we most likely will see a different OB each visit. As I am contending with GD and on Insulin to control GD, I ask each time I see a different OB about the likelyhood of being induced early.
What I wonder about, is, would they have told me this?? Because no one has said a word about it to me, until I have asked and I have asked each OB for the last 3 visits. They have basically said that yes I will be induced as it is the way that hospital does things. But because no one has offered me this information without my prompting it, I wonder just how 'well' I am being looked after.
The last OB I met with, was a young guy I have seen once before and he is very nice and easy to talk too and to understand. I asked him the same question and he said yes and that they will talk to me about choosing a date for this at my 36 week appointment (which is next week). I am about 90% expecting them not to say a word to me......which is leaving me feeling very concerned and frustrated.
I want to wait and see if they offer this information to me, or if they will just wait until I am at like my 37/38 week appointment and go "oh hey, by the way...we are going to induce you tomorrow".
Just needed to rant a bit ladies! Thanks if you got this far
I would put it in writing and send the hosp a fax or letter as well as asking them everytime. You shouldn't have to but you need to make sure you get the best outcome for you.
Geez! isnt it just sooo annoying, I deal with the public health system too and I was having the exact same problems regarding Vaginal birth after ceserean, getting info on all of that, I wasnt even given the option, the OB just said straight off yep! another cesar for you! I didnt know I could try vaginally after a c section until I found belly belly and did research myself, then I had brought the topic up with the OB. Turns out I cant anyhow unless labour happens on its own before Im due and Im 39 weeks preggers now so got c sect booked in for thurs, just gotta hope labour happens b4 hand...
But I certainly do know how you feel and what you mean! I have had soooo many problems with the public system throughout this pregnancy if we could afford private care we would do things that way but we cant. I even rang the hossy when I was 12 weeks preggers to book in my 20 week ante-natal appointment and was told by a midwife to ring back when I was closer to 20 weeks cause she couldnt book me in then, so I rang back when I was 18 weeks preggers, got a different midwife, who said "oh my you shoulda rang weeks ago!" I did not get in until 26 weeks pregnant they were so booked out! hence why I have nothing to show in my share care book, and they never fill my book out even when i throw it straight under their noses, oh and I havnt had my BP checked for weeks either! Its just wrong somethin needs to change!
I hope you get the answers your after and they dont stuff you around, all the best for the rest of your preganncy, let us know what happens
I notice both of you who are having public hospy troubles are in QLD. I have not had any troubles with my carers so i would be writing to the QLD minister for health with regard to the quality of care for maternity patients
Cherii, are you at Ipswich hospital? I went there, was on insulin for GD and wasn't told I was going to be induced until 32 weeks. You can negotiate with the date - they wanted to induce at 38 weeks but I got it stretched out another week and a half by agreeing to go for monitoring CTG's every second day. In the end I was induced and had to have an insulin/glucose drip during labour because my BSL's went too high. After having a very healthy (and average sized) baby, next time I will not be induced at all.
I went through this and I think the reason they don't say anything is there is no reason to discuss till it needs discussing.. I saw the same OB at every appointment but i was in the high risk group due to GD and previous c/s..
Also ask for an US at 36-37 weeks to get an estimate of baby's size?
i had a c/sec @ ipswich hosp . and my history isnt the best either , i am having my 1st ob visit @22 weeks , i can understand how you feel as my friend went to ipwich as well and was never offered the gd test and it was too late when they found out she had it , a teeny tiny young girl had a 9 lb 14 girl ... ouch ..
i have no idea whats going to happen at my 1st ob appt , but i reckon it will be a c/sec as i have a feeling it will be the same situation as what danielles was ...
Thanks everyone for reading my rant and posting your opinions too.
Artechim - no I am not at Ipswich Hospital, I am at the Logan one. The last OB that I met with said that because diabetes controlled via Insulin is the most serious of the 3 (GD, Type 2, Type 1) that they will induce me. I have been on Insulin for a while now as I was detected with GD at 24 weeks, due to being a PCOS sufferer (I already was pre-diabetic) and my Insulin amounts keep being increased.
So from this info they knew I was on insulin and if they automatically induce you early (at Logan, as it's their policy so to speak) then I would think they should discuss this with you as soon as you are started on the Insulin, so that you have time to prepare for what might not be the 'type' of birth you wanted.
I (personally) don't mind how I have my baby. I didn't think I would ever fall pregnant anytime soon and certainly not naturally. So I am happy for her to come any old how as long as she is a happy healthy baby. It just bothers me that I had to research it all myself. Then it makes me wonder how reliable the OB's are with what they tell me....if I will for sure be induced or not. My DH said not to let it go. But to bring it up again at the next appointment. If all goes according to what I have been told, at least I will be very prepared for my baby's arrival
aussienic - I had an ultrasound last week at 34 weeks.....the baby was measured at about 2.1kgs I think....but those scans are very unreliable.
I think the whole thing is just ridiculous really. I can't believe that they don't even give women ALL of their options.
I had a VBAC at Redlands hospital, but I did have to fight for it. I knew about my personal choices and made a decision accordingly and HAD to fight for it.
Charli - You do have options, Birthtalk is having a VBAC discussion on Thursday the 17th. If you want more details PM me. You have many other options other than having a repeat c/s at 38 weeks, in fact that idea alone gets my blood boiling. There are books you can read like "A Thinking Womens Guide to Better Birth" and "Silent Knife"... And getting a birth advocate, a doula. Have a phone around & you can get support now even.
