Hehe might as well throw in my DD's bowel habits for reference for everyone too

DD was exclusively BF for almost 6 months and she would poo multiple (i.e. many!) times in a day, right through until she started solids. I was waiting (as told many BF babies do) for her to stop soiling every nappy she went into and start to go a big stretch between poos, but it never happened lol. After she started solids she would still poo every feed, but then slowly dropped to pooing 3 or 4 times a day, and now she's anywhere between 1-4 times a day still. Very occasionally she will go more than a day between bowel motions, but that is rare, and is usually a sign she hasn't drunk enough fluids (BM or water, usually water) and often results in her getting generally backed up for a while (i.e. harder poos until she catches up).

DD was much like Jazz, Murph - she would use her bowels during or directly after a BF. In fact, she would often be really unsettled trying to poo (often in her sleep, waking her up) until she had a feed, which was hard, as she'd be thrashing about really uncomfortable, sucking to try to get a feed, but sucking also to try to do a poo ITMS.

As mentioned, this all happened especially whilst she was having a lot of trouble learning to be able to use her bowels properly, so sucking and feeding helped her as a baby's tummy filling up triggers what's called the gastro-colic reflex, giving them the urge to poo. My DD still works this way - all her bowel motions now happen (usually) within 5-10 minutes of eating a meal, and occasionally after having a BF still.

Hehe and so ends the poo talk from Acacia

hehehe gotta love the chatter that happens in these threads. you become a mummy, and you actively discuss your bubba's toileting habits!

BW - i read your post and i know we discussed the allergy thing at length when you were contemplating starting Sam on solids. i have also done a lot of reading to go with it, and i agree that holding off solids til 6 months (or as close to as possible) and then introducing foods helps to reduce the risk od allergies developing. there is also a lot out there that now says that foods such as peanuts that may cause allergic reaction are best introduced (just a little) before the 12 month mark (unless there is a known allergy in the family) - the only thing that seems to say to hold off until 12 months is honey, which makes sense (botulism risk).

we started introducing low risk foods, and have gradually introduced pretty much everything now. as i've probably mentioned, we live at least 15k's from a pharmacy, 30k's from the hospital - doesn't sound like much, but it can be a long trip if something is happening (like allergic reaction!) so the "high risk" foods have been introduced at mum's place when we've had a couple of hours to hang around and check on DD. she hasn't had much in the way of peanuts (just a scraping of peanut butter on a slice of bread) - but she had no reaction - means i'm not so worried about introducing satay back into our diet now!

Hi all - just wanted to say that we are back! Haven't had time to read through all the posts, but a big HI to all you lovely mummies and your gorgeous bubs.

We had an awesome time in LA and Hawaii. Jasmine was so funny at Disneyland - she really didn't know what to make of all the characters, so consequently all our photos with the characters have her with her face towards them trying to figure out what is going on! Spent all our time swimming in Hawaii. She was fantastic on the flights - basically slept for 90% of the time - wish I had been able to!

Will have to come back later to catch up properly as Jazzy is stirring.

    Hope you are all well.

    Janie and Jasmine xxx

    thanks for your advice BW

    Wow everyone is about today.

So her is my bit to add to such an interesting conversation....

Re: pooing... As you know Tara is a FF baby and has had no problem from that end. We always get 1 nappy a day (sometimes 2 if we are lucky) generally in the morning, mid way through her morning feed. DH did the change today and did it too early and after the nappy was off the "Mr Whippy" van arrived again and deposited it all over the change table , lucky I have cloth nappies on the change table for any accidents. I then made him rinse the nappy out and get the soaker bucket organised.

BW: No offence about the solids, and all advice is welcome. The first few times I tried Tara on solids she didn't show any interest but now she will try to grab the spoon and feed herself. I decided to start her as every mealtime she would watch us like a hawk when we ate and copy our mouth movement. Now when she eats she has also learnt how to use her tongue to swallow and not push everything out. So far there have been no adverse reactions for us, but it is interesting about the food allergies. A friend of our's little boy has severe eczema and has been diagnosed with all kinds of food allergies, he still hasn't had solids as yet and he is almost 7 months old. Maybe some kids are more suseptible than others.

    Big hello to everyone else.

That such good news Smithy, maybe Charlie's system needed some time to get used to the thickened formula.

Welcome back Janie, glad your trip went well!

Green, mate, those ABs are killers for bub's tummy. And he's been on them for a while now, hasn't he, first you then him (is that right)? I hope his problems clear up soon so he can stop them - I'm sure you'll see a massive improvement once he's off the ABs. A was a mess when I was on ABs, but we were lucky as it was only a few weeks.

Molars suck! A's second molars have been moving recently, but still not through. Don't know how long that's goign to take.

Ah, I love talking about pooh! In the first 1-2 months DS poohed every single time he fed. Then it gradually got less and less, till around 5 months he had a few weeks with 1/week, then we started solids and he was back to every 2-3 days. Once he was eating properly, he started going once per day.

On solids, there was an awesome article in a recent edition of the ABA's magazine about baby-led solids. She talked about meeting food and actually starting to eat. So meeting food from birth - ie, they sit with family while family is eating and see the food and see everyone eating. Then as they get older and interested they can reach out and try things if they want, but it's completely at their own pace - they chose what they want and how much. When they're ready to eat, they do, so there's no anxiety about whether they're ready or not, you know? It makes a lot of sense to me. She doesn't set out a particular age, but babies would naturally have to be sitting up and able to get the food and put it into their mouths by themselves.

We kinda did BLS for DS, but also spoon fed him stuff (particualrly when he was a bit older and hungry). We delayed wheat and dairy, but won't next time having read the new guidelines on allergies.

A had a fabulous day yesterday helping daddy in the garden. He even refused to go to the playground he was having so much fun. And he wanted daddy to put him down for a nap and at bedtime - I had such a lovely, lazy day!
