Reet get reading the more you know the better its less scary that way.
yes the cord is quite long bubs will be on your chest and it wont pull. the placenta comes away with more contractions its not pulled as its attached to the uterus wall you can wait for it to come on its own or they often give an injection in your leg to get it to come away from the uterus which is what i had. Its a funny sensation when it comes out and might need you to push a little not that you normally care as you have a new baby to look at in your arms :-)
Yes you contract right up till the baby is out and some more (less intense) to get the placenta out. The most intense contractions are in transition where they are right on top of each other and then they change as you push the baby out and you get a rest between them. The pushing stage in a first baby can last for 1 -2 hours depends on the size of bubs head and shoulders the rest slips out. I pushed for over an hour with Ella and need a vaccum delivery as i got tired and she was a bit stuck. Im hoping this baby comes a bit easier than that
Are you doing some Antenatal classes? as me and DP found them really helpful even though he whinged about going before we went
Also a good way to meet new mums - we still meet up with our babies 2 years later.
No question is silly ask away

reet - my last scan was 6 weeks so no thats why im stressing i dont want it to happen again!
a lady in another thread had her baby stop growing at 8 weeks 5 days, i was thinking that after 8 weeks youre sort of okay!
now im scared! plus i keep having dreams everynight that i start bleeding and miscarry its freakin me out!
but i think im ok - i dunno, im still nauseous and getting headaches and stuff but you never know..
the appt is at 2.20pm at the hospital in bairnsdale, about half an hour away where dh works, so he is coming with me! he is so excited which is great. he thought you would be able to see the sex of the baby, god love him.
im the same as you, i HAVE to know everything! i dont want any surprises!
ohh hiccups! how cute, i cant wait til i can feel things..
we bought a stroller off ebay on the weekend, she used it 3 times to push her baby around the house, went to pick it up, it was in perfect condition, not a mark/scratch on it! we got it for $106 and she paid $349 in oct last year! bargain! even dh loves it, i think im going to have a fight on my hands to push the baby :P
Reet-Oh god yeh every day since i found out the placenta has moved except if its to hot there is no way.
And i am glad you are trying not to worry so much i think i told someone once that there is really no point because once your a mum thats it the worry begins from abnormal babies to stillbirth then SIDS and on to childhood illness to stranger danger then alcohol and drugs and now for me car accidents as my nearly 18 yr old is learning to drive so just give up and cross your fingers and hang on for the ride of your life.
OH! i will say i wouldnt change a thing i have loved every minute of it.
And your questions are legit the cord is normally long enough to reach for bub to be put on your chest.
The midwives sometime gently pull on the cord to help the placenta out but only if the placenta starts to come away after the injection they give you they did with my boys.
My contractions are painfull until the transition then stop then the pressure of baby coming down is all i feel the uterus is still contracting to push bub out but i dont have the pain with them at that stage so it can be different for some women.
I know my sister was the same painful contractions until transition then nothing but pressure and pushing and burning v jay jay.
With pushing i have only had to push for about 5-10 minutes with all mine even my 1st i seem to wait until the head is right down and i get that heavy pressure feeling before i push but again different for some women.
Alish-sometimes the 12 weeks scan if in 3D you can see the sex my girlfriend did it was a boy so pretty obvious but dont get your hopes up.
AFM-Yeh! i had a reasonable sleep last night.
I just want to know am i having a c section in 22 days or am i going natural in 36 days arrggghh!!!! i hate the unknown.
T-Hopes-woo hooo on getting RAK'ed did i say that already a few posts back so many girls are getting RAK'ed i forget who i congradulated.
Dory-theres no shame in not being sure as a 1st time mum i had way to much milk with all my boys and was engorged all the time so bubs had a lot of trouble attatching hence the split cracked bleeding nipples and mastitis so i have S26 gold packed in my hospital bag for backup just in case.
And 2nd 3rd ect babies are so much easier cause you just know what your doing and there is no fear you are relaxed and just get on with it.
Reet - oh sweetie - I am so glad you've asked all those questions! Kell said it pretty good.
Some women, like me, also get after pains, well into the day after delivery. Basically just the uterus still contracting as in essence everything is less tight and fit than it was the first time.... the Obs said it's more common in second and subsequent vaginal deliveries. I didn't know about it so it was quite a surprise and more painful than I would have thought. But as you're a first timer, you shouldn't have to deal with that.
Transition is often the hardest time where you might shake, get the shivers, scream for it all to be over and want to go home. And once you're dialted and effaced you do have to push and it can last a while but only during the contractions, and hopefully there will be time in between them to rest. Before you experience it you wonder how will I know to push? But you do know and your body knows. It will tell you. It's an almost irresistable urge.
Take some energy drinks with you and some snacks, just in case you need an energy boost. Things that deliver a quick burst of energy - sugars and they're also easier on your tum.
PML when Kell said delivering the placenta can feel a bit weird. Right on there! It is a very WEIRD sensation.
Sophie's cord wasn't long enough for her to be placed on my chest immediately - poor wee girl only got to my tummy - I never asked why- maybe it was because she was twin 2 and so was much higher up in the uterus ( and I have a very long torso, for my height)...
I am just so excited for you.... I know it's scary because it's all a little unknown, but you'll do an excellent job and it is truly the most amazing experience ever. I would do it all again in an instant. To birth your own child is such an awesome and uplifting and yes painful, experience. But well worth it.
Ferrals - thanks sweetie... for building me up. Any news on Murray?
Anyway, off to run my errands... kinda looking forward to it but dreading it at the same time.
Reet - No such thing as silly questions! This is my 1st bub too so im just as curious about things as you are! Ive been doing a bit of reading on labor and its really helped my mind from wandering outta control! Im not scared (yet) of giving birth, I know its gunna hurt like no pain i can even imagine but i figure everyone goes back for more so its gunna be more than worth it!
Ive also got the fear about something being wrong with bubs - my sisters little boy has a very rare genetic disease called Ectodermal Dysplasia, we have no idea where is has come from in the family as he is the 1st to any of our knowledge to be born with it. As much as he is a gorgeous little boy, they are lucky as he has it mild but in some cases it is very bad! He has no teeth and never will have, he is 6y/old and wears dentures! It also means he cannot sweat and he overheats dangerously fast. He also had very sparse whitish coloured hair, they all seem to look the same! Thees a lot more to it but he is otherwise a normal, little boy! Very intelligent and active 6y/old. ED is mainly common in boys but girls can be the carrier! So i worry since we dont know where the heck it came from, that i am a carrier! The geneticist doesnt believe i will be a carrier as i would have had to have shown certain traits like dry skin, eczma, thin hair and thin brows! I have the opposite to ALL of those symptoms! I have thick, thick hair and brows, oily skin and suffered from acne not dry skin conditions! There is no in-vitro testing for it in Australia yet so not much we could do! My sisters 2nd little boy doesnt have it so they think maybe it was just one of those freak things that could have started in him!
Its a fear that sits in the back of my mind but no matter what my love for this bub is un-conditional. It worries me for the babies sake, not mine. I hate to think its little life may be harder because of it, i dont care about mine but worry for bubbys sake if that makes sense!?! Anyway what im trying to say is what will be will be
Ferrals - glad you got a good nights sleep! Please reveal your secrets! Im miles behind you and sleeping is a nightmare already! Eiiik!
AFM - im at home today and half of yesterday having a sicky, had a stinking headache yesterday and so exhausted but starting to come good now after resting!
Friends of DH's had a baby boy last night and they used our EXACT baby boy name! So spewing! Even the same middle name! Dont ya hate that! Ah well we aint changing so may have two boys within 4mths of each other with the same name!
Oh and im 24wks today! Hoooorrrraaaaay! Hurry up June, I cant wait to meet our bub!! P.S we arent finding out the sex of this bub but I am getting soooo tempted too! Someone stop me!!!! We promised ourselves we wouldnt!!!
Reet you need to wait until the placenta is seperating from the wall of the uterus as otherwise there is a risk of pulling the uterus out also (inverted uterus where its inside out if that makes sense very unpleasant) I've only seen this twice so its rare but if you just pulled the cord the rate would be much higher. Or else you can pull the cord and snap it or rip it of the placenta. Often when this happens and this is common its not a problem and the mother can push the placenta out without any cord traction but sometimes it will cause haemorrage as until the placenta has detached from the uterus it has a lovely vessel supply. Not a problem for bub as he/she is out by then but it can be from mum. Another reason for a physiological 3rd stage of labour in comparison to active (drugs, tugging etc) as its allowing it to come on its own.
With my first I pushed for 2.5hrs but she was posterior and the midwife had me pushing before I had any urge so I didn't have my body to go with. I think had I been allowed to wait until the urge was there it would have been quicker. I insisted on waiting with no2 although I'd been fully dilated for 30minutes before and when I pushed it took literally 1minute and she was out. That time I couldn't have not pushed for the life of me.
As for the cord been to short I have only come across that 2-3times and then its clamped and cut so mum can have bub on her chest. The few I've seen have been so short that they have needed to be cut to get them above the vagina if that makes sense. One was about 25cm and it did cause a few minor complications. Mum had some tugging during labour on one side (where the cord was attached) and when she pushed the baby was stuck as the cord wasn't long enough. It did snap all was ok but now I'd be more aware if someone complained about a tugging sensation during labour. But I'd say well over 99% of cords are normal length.
T-Hopes woohoo on been 24weeks. Your so close now don't find out.
Well my morning resulted in me getting a flat tyre 40kms from home on a dirt road. My car is a patrol so I knew I couldn't change the tyre (Ive been doing it for years) but the weight of the tyre been pregnant made it impossible. Luckily my Dad was able to come to the rescue or else I'd still be walking.
I think it's official - I am officially addicted to BB. I need help.... I should be out doing gardening ( well maybe not in this blustery wind) or I should be doing housework whilst HB is asleep... but no here I am, furiously checking the threads. I have given myself some leniency over the next couple of days but then with any luck I will hopefully take a bit more of a back seat.....
Mildez - poor sweetie - Yay for Dad's to the rescue.... that's a pretty decent amount of time to be pushing my dear... well done.
Oh THANKYOU SO MUCH girls for all ur replies to my questions!!! What wld i do without u! U all have a few different stories so its given me a bit of an overview of what i cld expect.. im going to read over all ur replies a few times so it all sinks in a bit better.
Kell-We have an antenatal class on the 12th march.. im having our baby at the private hospital here and they only do the one 8 hour class.. im happier with that then going every week since dh works away alot.. luckily its his week off that week. Im also thinking of doing the ABA course thingy.. its apparently a really good b/f course... i wld rather have a bit of my own knowledge so i dont have to listen to everyone telling me what to do and how to do it!
If i have any more questions i wont hesitate to ask all u knowledgable women.. u are so much help!
Alish- Was there more then just a sac at ur last scan?? Gosh i dont know how u have done it, i wld have definitely had to have another scan for peace of mind! U will be fine tho, the 12 week scan is the best, its so hard to believe that ur baby is still so little when it looks like a fully formed little human! So ur definitely going to find out the sex at ur 20 week scan?
Well done on ur stroller purchase! Bargain! Funny how males love prams.. my dh is insisting i wait til hes home to choose one.. hes got all these little requirements for it.. haha im glad he knows a bit about them.. i have no idea! As long as i can push it im happy.. ive had a terrible time in the past trying to push my SIL's babies.. the pram just wasnt going where i wanted it too!
Ferrals- Gosh u always hit the nail on the head.. u are so right.. my mum has mentioned a few times that once u have kids u know what constant worrying is like... its just one of those things i dont think u understand until ur a parent. Gosh i know i wld have tried a bit more to be an angel in my teenage years if i had known how worried my mum was! Love ur comment 'hang on for the ride of ur life!' haha so true..
Dory- Oooh energy drinks during labour hey??! yummo! My addiction was V's before i fell pg... i see them now in shop fridges and just gaze at the wistfully.. haha u have got me all excited! One of those will definitely boost my energy levels and spirits! Ill have to double check there ok when b/f.. im sure one wont hurt during labour tho..
Oh and i imagine that delivering the placenta wld feel a bit weird... (TMI!!!) about 4 days after my m/c started, i 'delivered' the sac.. it was about the size of my palm.. i was in the shower and just felt this big thing gulump (cldnt think of any other word to describe it!) out of me... it was a bit bizarre! I was tempted to just try and jam it down the plug hole i dont know what i was thinking.. thank goodness i didnt! I got some toilet paper, picked it up and woke up dh to see it.. probably not the best thing to be woken up too!
Im very curious about our dear friend Murraycod too! Where oh where is she??!
T-Hopes- Oh ur poor little nephew, he sounds like he manages quite well tho! I can understand ur fears, but im sure everything will be alright with ur beautiful little baby.. its sad how these freakish things can just happen. You have helped to put things into perspective for me.. i know i wld love our little baby regardless too.. i started feeling really overwhelmed the other day wondering how I wld manage looking after a disabled baby and all the things I wld miss out on.. like b/f possibly etc, very very selfish of me!
Like ferrals said the other day, women are made tough to cope with whatever life throws at us. I guess all u can hope is that ur baby is going to be healthy but yep what will be will be!
Oh and how on earth did dhs friends name there baby exactly what u want to name urs??! Did they copy u???! Thats crazy.. and quite annoying!
Stay strong with not finding out the sex too! Im finding it really really difficult.. especially since im getting u/s's every couple weeks from now on at my ob's office! It will be worth it tho..
Mildez- Oh hopefully i get a good midwife that doesnt make me push too soon, hopefully they only tell me too once my body feels the need too.. pushing for 1 minute sounds a lot easier!
U poor thing getting a flat tyre! That really sux. Thank god for ur Dad! Theres no way i cld lift a tyre now.. U wld have been absolutely crazy to try too! Did anyone drive past that cld have helped in the time u were waiting??
AFM- Feeling so so sad about the earthquake in Christchurch, its absolutely devastating. Its making me feel sick watching it on the news.. i just cant seem to turn it off tho. Give me a cyclone anyday over an earthquake, atleast there is warning. All those poor injured ppl and families that have lost loved ones We got married just near Christchurch, it is such a beautiful city, so many old buildings that have been damaged and wont ever be able to be replaced. Its all so sad
Its making me worry a bit that im bringing a baby into this crazy world...
