i have had constipation on and off throughout this pregnancy and i have maintained a very good fibre diet and it's been working well except maybe the odd occasion, but yesterday i noticed my bowel motions were quite painful and now i have pretruding haemerroids.
i've read this is a very common prob during pregnancy so what can i use to get rid of them. i am utterley embarresed, not to mention i have a 36wk anti natal appoint next week with a new dr and would love them gone by them (ha ha ok maybe not possible) but i'm worried about giving birth and having them...
LOTS of warm water running over them in the shower, more more more fibre to the point where you hardly have to work at all to poo. That way they don't get stressed. Sorry!
Not sure about fixing them but to avoid them start taking Fybogel. You get it from the chemist. It's safe to take while pregnant and breastfeeding. I had it recommended to me by a midwife after giving birth to get things going again & to avoid them.
I got them in the last few weeks of my pregnancy too, they say they are meant to go after your bubs arrives and your body gets back to normal.............. I still have it and its more painful now than when i was pregnant???? Yep they are embarrassing hahaha what us women do huh
Like the girls have said, increase fibre and more importantly, water. If you have lots of fibre but no water, you actually get constipated! Try taking Lactulose syrup for a couple of days while you've got he haemmrhoids to help with the constipation and take the "pressure" off the bowel movements. Either Anusol or rectinol will help to shrink the roids. Suppositories work better than the oint. Try putting a little lubricant on the suppository before inserting if the pain is really hard to bear (sorry if TMI).
Rectogesic/Anusol wipes or witch hazel on a cotton pad will also work to shrink and offer pain relief. Take a sitz bath daily ( 1/4 cup epsom salt in a few inches of warm water in the bath tub and immerse your bum, or put a basin of warm water with epsom salt in the toilet bowl and sit over it.
Try not to sit or stand for long periods, This puts pressure on the anal sphincter. Go for a 20 min walk daily.
ha ha ha, yes no wonder they let the women have babies and not men i don't think DH would handle all these things very well. i will try these remedies so thank-you for your advice.
LOTS of water and LOTS of fibre, i agree with the girls, get as much as you can into you to get to the point where its really not an effort to go! If you're REALLY straining then pur epear juice is good for some fairly immediate (within 12-24 hours) results, but definately review your diet and make sure you're eating as much fibre as you can. And remember iron supplements can make constipation worse so if you're on any iron supplements I'd probably drink a pear juice a day just to keep things nice a soft.
i have the same problem and i find that if i eat a couple of prunes after dinner each night i dont get constipated at all. also i have used paw paw ointment on the heameroids and within a day or two they have reduced.
I actually rang through to the birthing suite at my local hospital during the week to ask them some advice about my 'Harry" as I call it.... they recommended putting a cold facewasher into the freezer for a while and then laying down with it 'between my cheeks' for relief - it was very much a relief, so much so that I fell asleep! I have also found that using a cream from the Chemist (Anusol or Rectinol) helps to almost numb Harry overnight, making him less irritable during the day, I also agree with the other girls - try not to sit for long periods of time as it puts stress on the area making them more irritated.
IMO I would try to get them cleared up before you give birth.
When I was pushing, my 'roids hurt more than pushing my DS out! My OB said he had never seen them so bad in a first time mum. I had to have ultrasound on them whilst I was in hossy. My tear caused me no pain, but my bottom was unbearable.
Note to self - lesson learnt for when I have second baby, keep on top of bowel habits!
I also wanted to add that I physically could not drink any more water, or consume any more Metamucil, Benefibre, etc. My colorectal surgeon said that some people have a pre-disposition to poor bowel habits, and that it is usually worse in women than in men.
