Impatient me wants to induce, rational me knows waiting is better....

My blood pressure is still much higher than is ok. As it's been high for quite some time now, my OB is very worried about the toll it is having on me. Last time I was induced when my BP spiked at up to 220/160 ish.

This time my BP has been higher than during the last pregnancy. I have an OB appointment this arvo and I know that she has booked in a few induction slots next week.

I feel like a cartoon character with a little birdie on each shoulder.

Impatient Birdie wants me to have the induction next week. Impatient Birdie knows that I am over being pregnant, I want to meet my baby, everything is ready and we are keen to move out of limbo pregnant land and get on with the next phase.

Rational Birdie on my other shoulder knows that whilst my BP stays OK (not perfect, but OK) and as long as there is no risk to baby or me then I should continue to wait for labour to happen spontaneously. I'm doing induction acupuncture starting tomorrow and possibly having a stretch and sweep today so things might get going. On the other hand, baby could have other ideas...! I know that regardless of how many induction methods I use if baby isn't ready to come out, it ain't coming out.

Generally with me, Impatient Birdie tends to win. I am a terribly impatient person.

My OB is pro-VB so this isn't about a c-section. It's more about whether I will take the induction option or wait it out.

My blood pressure could spike up again and this could all be a redundant argument...

These thoughts keep going around and around in my head....

OK, crazy pregnant lady out for the day. Rational Birdie is winning at the moment. I'll report back if Impatient Birdie starts to have more compelling arguments.

The last month of pg is surely the longest, and I think its normal to just want it over with. Your health is obviously most important so if your blood pressure gets too high then induction is your only option (as you well know). Pg is full term at 37 weeks so if your Dr thinks its necessary to avoid a sudden spike in BP then I think it would be ok, and not impatient of you. I had a drug-free induced labour with my second child and it was no more painful than my first spontaneous labour where I took every drug available to me. Of course it is best to wait for spontaneous labour to start and that should be what you aim for so long as your blood pressure is ok because there are risks with induction and you could very well end up with a c-sect if bub is no where near ready to come.

I guess what Im trying to say is that it is best to wait until your Dr thinks its too risky to continue. Its a hard place to be, because like you, I find my impatient self to be very very persistent, and usually wins, hence my induction. Lol.

Impatient me would be asking for an induction date too!

Sounds like your doctor is one of the good ones that would prefer to let nature take it's course. I think in this instance listen to your doctor.

I agree with Diamond Girl here, try to wait it out. I too was impatient (no medical issues though), so I understand what you are going through! Best of luck, I hope the accupuncture helps speed things along.

You know what, you just need to do what is best for you and for bubs. If that means induction & meeting bubba earlier, then so be it.

All we ever want as an outcome of a pregnancy is a happy & healthy mumma and bubba.

I've never been in the situation, but I know I'd be itching to meet bubs. My niece went down both paths, waited for labour first time around, induced early 2nd time around. Both of her DDs are happy and healthy, she was decidedly less stressed the first time around, so the choice for induction for her was a right one.

I had pre-eclampisia with my last child so believe me i know about your high BP but this pregnancy my blood pressure is not normal but its not harming my baby so I am pushing for it to stay in as long as it can!!!

but in the end you need to do what you feel is right, I would try and wait till atleast 38 weeks though.

I'm right there with you fabulous Fi! And from experience i am here to egg on rational you. I was induced due to PE and it was a less than desirable birth. I was lucky enough to not have BP issues with DD2, waited it out and had an awesome birth at 42 weeks. So as long as they will let you, i would avoid an induction. Of course if it is necessary there is no question, but i personally wont be putting my hand up for another induced birth unless i have to.

This means my hubby is going to miss the birth of our third baby, but i would rather that than be induced.

Oh and i am TOTALLY over this pregnancy. I am looking after two toddlers on my own, everything hurts, i can't sleep and i just want this baby OUT!!! So i understand.

Well it seems that Impatient Birdie has been putting protein in my wee! Cheeky!

I'm currently hooked up to a monitor and we are talking about getting to 37 weeks. I'll be off for blood tests shortly.

    Good times!

stick with rational! i was induced at 38 weeks and 3 days, after 30 hours i was only 1cm and bub was distressed, had 3 lots of gel and OB couldnt even get a finger in to break my water, was so painful and I ended up with a horrific experience with a c section and didnt see my son for nearly 3 hours, like u said if bub isnt ready it isnt ready no matter what you do! I had signs of pre eclampsia too, protein in urine, terrible LFT's and high BP, I was later informed by nurses that I shouldnt have been induced, just watched more closely, having said that every case is different and I am not a doctor (just an RN!) and its up to and your health professional. Hope all goes well, I hope I didnt scare you, just wanted to inform you that induction isnt the answer to everything.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Strong protein in my urine today has changed the game. Labetalol brought my BP down enough that I didn't have to go straight to hospital.

An internal revealed I'm 2 cm dilated which means induction will likely go off without a hitch. I had a good induction experience last time so I'm not worried.

Blood test results come back tomorrow so assuming they are all ok then I'll be induced on Monday.

Thanks all for your thoughts. Impatient Birdie clearly is very sneaky.

Good luck. I understand those birds on the shoulder. I had PE with my first child, beat a medical induction by going into labour naturally but ended up with an epidural and augmentation anyway. So much for that.

This time I was desperately hoping things would go nice and peacefully, but instead of PE I have something equally as terrible called Obstetric Cholestasis that has a 15% increased chance of stillbirth after week 37 so I am desperate to meet my baby, but the doc said we'll induce at 38 weeks and I, the woman who wanted a water birth and no interference at all, am so scared that I'm tempted to ask for an earlier induction.

Hope it all goes well, I'd be interested to know how the induction goes because I'm freaked out by the concept and have heard so many horror stories, but knowing my baby's life is in danger is a lot worse for me and makes it all a little easier to process.
