Question Oh Rh Neg blood type

    Hi all

Officially I shouldn't be in here yet as I'm only 25 weeks and not in my final trimester yet but have a 28 week question

My blood type is O Rh Neg so I know I will have to have the Anti D injection at 28 weeks. What's the injection like? Standard needle or big and scarey? In arm or bum or ???? Also is it one or two during the pregnancy and then potentially one after the baby is born if it has positive blood type - understand this is for future pregancies so my body doesn't produce antibodies that could effect that baby.

If anyone has had the injection could you let me know.

    Cheers

    Congrats on your pregancy!

I am A negative and had a needle last pregancy. It wasnt a big needle just standard and it was in the arm I think! Needles dont phase me so maybe it was big ?? lol!

I think I had 2 needles by memeory and then didnt need one as DS was A neg too. I am pretty sure they worked that out there and then?

Good luck Hopefuly some had a better explanation

I had the injection and it was a normal needle and I am pretty sure that it was in my arm. Hardly a worry tho... Good luck

Normal needle and doesn't hurt much at all, a little sting when they put the needle in but afterwards my arm didn;t hurt or anything. First one at 28 weeks I got in my arm, but the last one I got at 30-something weeks and she did it in my bum, well not really my bum, more the fleshy bit just below the hip area. Told her it wasn't fair, I got the first one in my arm! Apparently it's supposed to hurt less...it hurt the same going in but didn't feel it at all afterwards.

I'm an A- and I got it for my first two pregnancies. It was just an average needle and they injected it into my bum from memory! It didn't really hurt and was no big deal.

And yep, you usually get two injections during pregnancy and one afterwards if your bub is a positive blood type. Both my boys are A- too and we worked out so is DH so I don't need the injections this time. Spewing I had to have them the other times, but we weren't sure of DH's blood type back then.

Tiny needle, had mine in the arm! My DD ended up O-Negative too so didn't need the one at birth. Had one at 28 weeks and the other at 34, I think!

The needle is a normal size needle. You have the injection at about 28 and 34 weeks. They can give it to you in your arm, bum or leg. If the father of the baby is also a negative blood group then you don’t need the injection

I am a total wuss when it comes to needles, I am O Neg.

I had the shot when I was 6 weeks coz of some spotting and it wasn't so bad, ok I admit I shut my eyes pretty tight before they gave it to me coz I pass out if I see a needle, but pain wise it was fine just a little bit like a mozzie bite.

I had my RH Neg shot at 28 wks - and apparently as bloods were also going to be done - it was my job to tell the nurse to take the blood first, THEN do the RH Neg needle...!

So if you're also having bloods done, make sure that gets taken first lol!!

I am A- I had some bleeding at 17 weeks so had to have one then and had the injection at 28 and 34 weeks also and it is just a normal size needle. Had it in the fleshy part of my bottom. Didn't feel a thing and wasn't sore afterwards. DD was O+ at birth so got another one then also.

I am Oneg and ahd the 28wk one in my arm and the 34wk in the top of my bottom. That one hurt less (more fleshy )

Even though my DP had negative blood type they still gave me the anti D. When DD was born they worked out she was neg (of course she was if we both were) so didnt need to have the anti D after she was born.

I hate needles with a passion but it wasnt too bad. i also kept thinking that it was hleping keep my DD healthy and safe and that helped.

    You can refuse

You only need the anti-D if your partner (father of the child in-utero) is Rh positive. There is only a problem if the baby is positive and their positive blood crosses into the mothers blood stream. The mixing of bloods creates antibodies in the mother (like when you are vaccinated) so the next pregnancy with a positive baby may have complications.

Two negatives can't make a positive baby

Thats exactly what I thought and told them but I think to cover their butts they said unless DP wanted to come in and be tested so they were 100% sure he was neg they were going to give me the anti-d. I can understand that in a way as if he made a mistake in nowing his blood type then it would put the baby at risk.

I jsut went along with it as I wanted to be sure DD would be okay and DP wouldnt get a needle (and he calls me a whimp!) Men!

Wuss!!!!! I made DH get his blood group done (not that they needed the evidence in the end - they *chose* to believe me ) Considering pregnancy, labour and birth it was the least he could do

I am O neg and my husband is a Neg blood type also so I wasn't given Anti D. However, I am a weak Rhesus and was typed as a positive when I donated blood. I was typed several times throughout the pregnancy because of this and was always O neg. Anyway, I got an O positive baby!! Weird, should really have had the Anti D as it can happen!

The issue is if you are negative. If your DH (and father of the baby) is definitely negative and the baby is positive then you would be positive and anti-D isn't needed. In your specific case you need to seek clarification on what this blood typing means for you if you truly have variations between positive and negative (not something I am familiar with )
