Achey, unstoppable runny nose, cough, sore ears and burning nose and sore throat. Can anyone recommend some safe things to cure or speed up recovery? Make me feel better?

So devo'd cos been looking forward to this week off to finish nursery and have a lot to organise around the house before I head off to have bubs. Just wanna be productive and rest cos I can, not cos I need to.

Anyway that's my poor me winge - sorry.

Maybe take some panadol to help with the aches and pains.

My mum used to give me honey + lemon juice + hot water... not sure if it helps but always seems to! I think honey has some sort of soothing affect on sore throats, not sure what the lemon does... I am sure someone else will be more knowledgeable about this! I usually do a tablespoon of honey, half a lemon squeezed, fill with hot water and then mix.

Honey and lemon drinks are fantastic and try to get a good dose of garlic in your diet too. I hope you're on the mend soon hon!

Thanks. It's on my chest now so hope it takes off soon. I'll try the honey lemon and have lots of garlic.

Nothing worse than being sick and pregnant - you're just left to your own devices. Everyone else around you is dosing up on Nurofen and other fantastic drugs like that, where their noses actually stop running for five minutes. And you are just one big snot monster.

I hope you get better soon.

Hahaaa evie I did get a bit emotional yesterday - feeling hopeless and said to DH "I don't know how I'll cope with a baby and being this sick. I'm just a fat snot machine at moment"

    Hi

Sorry to hear you are not well.

I find bedrest and lots and lots of sleep helps getting rid of cold/flu symptoms as well as hot drinks with honey BUT was also astounded to be told by my OB a few weeks ago when I had the startings of the flu that I could take Cold and Flu. I was probably about 24/25 weeks at that stage and he said woudn't harm the baby. You might want to check with your own provider to see what he/she says rather than taking the information 2nd hand. I didn't have to take it in the end as spent two days in bed and managed to head it off at the pass - I think the vitamin C suppliments I've been taking since Day 1 help too mind you.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    Hi Ellee,

Like you I've just finished work and uni exams and come down with a sore throat - hoping it'll stop there. It's very common to get sick when you've been 'running on empty' to the finish line at work. I definately second the lemon and honey - especially if you can make that manuka honey. And loads of garlic - then you'll be fat and smelly! But at least you'll stop being snotty Echinacea (more effcetive in liquid form) is also safe to take in pregnancy. Vit C and Zinc are the best supplements for colds also. And finally lots of REST. I'm struggling with the same thing too - a list a mile long of things to do for the baby but I'm just gonna have to lay low today

Good luck - hope you feel better soon!

Well I went to the hospital last night after I'd had a crazy coughing fit, was feeling terrible and getting what i think is braxton hicks. Ended up putting me on ventalin - which made me feel terrible for first 2 hrs while i was racing but ended up with a bit better sleep. It's moved down to my chest now which is really annoying. Today my nose bleeds have started again which isn't a good combo with my runny nose and chesty cough. My baby shower is tomorrow arvo so I really hope that I feeling better!!

Normally I'm really not a sook, I tend to soldier on through things with the attitude that there are plenty of people a lot worse off than me, but I must be getting really emotional cos I just want to cry. Have been looking forward to this time for so long, I didn't imagine being sick.

Meadsie - The nurse at hospital last night said can have pseudoephidrine (sp? - brain not working) but would rather the doctor prescribe to me. So it must be ok.

Koru - I hope you feeling better soon! I've also done the eucalyptus in hot water with towel over head to try clear my airways - it might help you too... I know what you mean by running on empty and did say that to DH. My body has been strong to get through stress or work lately. Rest up, and hope it clears off soon so you can enjoy your last few weeks too

Oh wow Ellee that sounds really awful - much worse than my sore throat!
How are you normally with pseudo-ephedrine? It does raise your heart rate a fair bit so if your blood pressure is on the high side already I'd avoid it. I'm one of those unfortunates who despite the racing heart actually feels really drowsy on the stuff - I can't hack it at any time. OK got some garlicy honey lemon concoction brewing right now....off to imbibe!
Lots of healing vibes coming your way Ellee

    Hi Ellee

Sounds like you're having a pretty rough time of it - you poor thing.

Pretty sure that pseudoefedrine (can't spell either ) is one of the major ingredients in Cold & Flu medicines. Its always good to hear when several people say that its okay to take something.

You might get your doc to check what category medicine it is. From what I understand they grade them A B C etc regarding safely. A means millions have taken with no side effects so perfectly safe. B means not millions but lots of people have taken with no side effects so most docs happy to prescribe and so on down. Again from what I'm being told not keen to prescribe C but will do so if really necessary and anything else won't prescribe.

Now it may be an old wives tale but I was pretty sure that when you start getting nose bleeds during a cold it means that you've broken the back of it and you should start to get better
