Yowie, the distinction is made along cold/warm blooded animals. (warm blooded "meat" was more rare and treasured, fish etc was considered affordable and readily available, so giving up fish would have had no meaning...... this is what I was taught anyway..... someone correct me if i'm wrong)
The no meat on friday was established as a penance for the death of jesus..... our tiny bit of suffering to acknowledge his etc.
Being that its meant to be a penance we really dont see it as such, its more just tradition now.... we have massive seafood platters of prawns, calimari, moreton bay bug, baby octopus and fish all home made..... its actually a bit of a big celebration here, which is kind of nice, but definately not a sacrifice!
